You are the difference between a mountain lost and a mountain saved.
Land Trust Day was designated as a special day to recognize the efforts of conservation land trusts like Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy who contribute to the well-being of communities by preserving farmland for food production, places for people to enjoy outdoor recreation, clean water, wildlife and plant habitat, and scenic beauty.
Conservation is an investment in local communities, improving the quality of life for visitors and residents alike.
Land Trust Day sponsors pledge to contribute a specific amount or donate a percentage of sales from Saturday, June 6 in recognition of SAHC’s positive impact on our shared resources and communities.
Land Trust Day was established, not only to celebrate the work of Land Trusts, but also to celebrate and raise awareness of National Trails Day.
National Trails Day, held annually on the first Saturday in June, was established in 1993 by the American Hiking Society to advocate for trail stewardship, promote conservation, and encourage people to experience the outdoors.
A core value of SAHC is to preserve green space for outdoor recreation to improve upon the quality of life for all people. On this day, we encourage everyone to get outdoors for hiking, biking, and volunteerting to maintain local trails.
SAHC conserves unique plant and animal habitat, clean water, farmland, scenic beauty, and places for people to enjoy outdoor recreation in the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. We connect people with land for outdoor recreation, health, fitness, wellbeing, farming, livelihood and learning. We also steward all of our conservation properties.
The health and happiness of future generations depends on how we invest today in protecting the lands and water we depend upon.
As population growth affects the Southern Appalachians, we must balance preservation of undeveloped land with the needs of people who live, work, and visit this incredible region. SAHC helps agency and community partners acquire their highest priority tracts, to close gaps within national forests and help open new state and local public parks, which are vital to the continued growth of our outdoor recreation economy.
Protects Water Quality
SAHC has protected six municipal watersheds. Clean water translates into healthier fisheries.
Reduces Risk of Natural Hazards
SAHC strives to keep forests intact to stabilize soils and reduce the severity of landslides or erosion.
Protects Scenic Views
SAHC protects scenic, cultural, and historical assets along scenic byways.
