Pisgah View State Park – Land Donation
Stagg and Cheryl Newman have been long-time supporters of conservation and champions for the creation of NC’s future Pisgah View State Park.
“This will be the westernmost state park in NC, where we need more recreation facilities,” says Stagg. “We’re excited to see the creation of the park, and to have beautiful trails and educational opportunities for both adults and children. We’re so thrilled that the land – including lovely waterfalls, mountain views, and habitat – will be conserved and not broadly developed. We owe a gratitude to the Cogburn family and to all the champions who have supported the creation of the state park.”
Inspired by the conservation of the land for recreation, in 2021 the Newmans donated a 10-acre tract of land to SAHC, which was transferred to the State of NC for inclusion in the park. Now, they have donated another five-acre tract of land, which will likely provide a space to support staffing for the park.
“This piece of property has two existing housing sites with a working well and utilities,” explains Stagg. “It provides a space that is convenient for ranger housing, but secluded from the center of the guest areas and public facilities. The land also has beautiful stream frontage along Davis Creek.”
SAHC transferred the donated tract of land to the state of NC, which is continuing to progress on plans and improvements for the state park. Damage caused by Helene, including land slides, has delayed the process.

Why Conservation and Park Creation is Important
“We want to support conservation of the land for the park and in the surrounding area because the ridgelines and mountains here form an important corridor for wildlife to move, as well as stunning vistas that people can enjoy,” continues Stagg and Cheryl. “We’re happy to add to the legacy and SAHC’s goal of a conservation corridor from Mt. Pisgah to Max Patch. This park will become an anchor for wildlife. We’re also thrilled that the park will provide trails for horses, along with additional recreational and educational opportunities. We appreciate working with SAHC for conservation of the region, and we encourage other people to work with SAHC to donate their own land or funding to support ongoing efforts to conserve land.”
