2024 Bike Ride to Alexander Chapel Baptist Church

group of cyclists gathered in front of historic white church building

On a bright Saturday in May 2024, an excited group of 30+ folks gathered to ride bikes, enjoy the outdoors, learn about Black history in rural Buncombe County and farmland conservation, and share stories, fellowship, and connections with each other.

Cyclists gathered at the SAHC Community Farm in Alexander, NC and rode to the Alexander Chapel Baptist Church and Cemetery site, where church community/family members met them to talk about our history. Speaking about the historic site and community connections were Annette Coleman, Kim Coleman, Deborah Sloan and Craig Sloan.

Cyclists, led by Larry Pender of Pathways to Parks and Travis Bordley of Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, then returned to the SAHC Community Farm along with the church family descendants to enjoy lunch and fellowship.

Special thank you to The Flying Bike for making bikes available for the ride! Thank you also to the other groups represented, including Riding in Color, Major Taylor Cycling Club, Momentum Bike Club, Blue Ridge Dirt Skrrrts and Cane Creek Cycling. Everyone enjoyed a truly fantastic day.

We deeply appreciate the experience we shared together, the new connections made, and the efforts of everyone who contributed to make the day a success – especially our partners at Pathways to Parks and Annette Coleman along with other family members of the Alexander Chapel Baptist Church and Cemetery.
