2018 Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop

Date: Thursday March 8, 2018

Time: 2:00-5:00

Location: SAHC Community Farm

Cost: FREE for all participants

Join Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop.  Based on the outdoor ethics of Leave No Trace Inc. (LNT), participants will learn the 7 LNT principles that help reduce impact while spending time outside.  During this three hour interactive workshop taught by two LNT Master Educators, we will cover the Appalachian-specific principles and explore ways to implement them in local explorations. We will engage in educational activities both inside and outside.  By the end of this workshop, participants will have a clear understanding of Leave No Trace as an organization, the 7 principles and how to implement them, and how to share their new knowledge with others. Anyone from seasoned outdoors people to first time hikers are welcome to join!

Please bring a water bottle and wear suitable attire for an indoor workshop with a few outdoor activities. Optional: materials to take notes.

Farm Workshop: Whole Farm Planning with Base Mapping, Site Analysis, and Schematic Design

This workshop will be an introduction of how to approach planning and layout of land for small-scale farming production. This year our case study property is a local non-profit not currently in production — we’ll explore various options for production planning there. Our second annual “Whole Farm Planning” workshop will be particularly appropriate for participants who already own or lease land, as well as those who plan to do so in the future. Our focus will be on growers and beginning farmers, although landowners interested in potentially leasing to farmers are welcome.

In our case study for the process we will look at the land of the 6-acre, nonprofit Zamani Refuge African Culture Center in Leicester and “walk through” a site analysis of the property’s conditions using a number of land planning tools. We will inventory conditions such as soils, water, wind, aspect and more to create a multi-layered map of the site as a base for decision making. Using this information, we will shape a conceptual design for the site, which addresses some of the needs and challenges identified in the analysis phase. Cost: $50

This workshop will be a safe environment for women to learn how to maintain and safely use tractors on their farms. This workshop is specifically for women and will be led by local farmer Danielle Hutchison of Beacon Village Farm.

Small and large tractors are among the most important assets on any farm. This hands-on workshop provides a foundation in basic maintenance and safe, efficient operation. Learn how to service the filters and regularly grease your tractor, loader and implements. Participate in hitching and unhitching a 3-point attachment for efficient implement switching, and run a front-end loader.

Participants will leave with the knowledge to take care of their mechanized equipment, leading to less equipment damage, failure and down time. Bring your questions! This workshop is open to the public, cost: $20

Jamie and Sara Jane Davis started A Way of Life Farm in January 2009 in Bostic, NC where they grow 2 acres of organic vegetables and raise organically fed non-GMO pork. Due to an injury earlier in his life Jamie found that attention to body movement and a daily practice of yoga on the farm was the way to sustain his work. During this workshop you will learn the most beneficial & efficient ways to move while performing various tasks on and off the farm to prevent injury and keep your body pain-free.
