2018 March Wildflower Wednesday

Date:  Wednesday, March 28

Time:   11:00-3:00pm

Location:  Laurel Ridge, Black Mountain, NC

Cost:  This hike is free for SAHC members and $10 for non-members

This Wednesday’s hike will take place on Laurel Ridge where SAHC has protected over 500 acres of land. This hike will be about 4 miles with some steep sections of trail.  March is early in the spring season, so the amount of flowers is dependent on the weather.  We will ascend through Southern and Central Appalachian Oak Forests and Cove Forests, crossing by some lovely streams, and rock formations. We will also see a few small waterfalls!

This hike is part of  the Wildflower Wednesday Hike Series, showcasing the incredible biodiversity in our region. The hikes will be on the last Wednesday of the month in March, April, May, and June.  The Wildflower Wednesday Hikes will have representative from the Western North Carolina Botanical Club with us to help identify and learn about the flowers!

Registration for this hike is now full. To be placed on the waitlist, or if you plans have changed and you can no longer join us, please contact emily@appalachian.org. Thank you!

Date:  Wednesday, May 30

Time:   11:00-3:00pm

Location:   Prices Creek Preserve near Burnsville, NC

Cost:  This hike is free for SAHC members and $10 for non-members

Enjoy a wildflower memorial hike to honor our friend Bill Popper and his dedication to preserving the 573-acre property he loved.  The hike will take us through a primarily Northern Hardwood Forest ecosystem. Once we get off the gravel road, we will cross into the property and hop onto an old logging road and head towards a nice spot along the creek to enjoy a picnic lunch.  Along the way, we will hopefully see some Purple Turtle Heads blooming and maybe eat some Indian Cucumber. We will hike about four miles with some possible bushwhacking.

Swimming in a Sea of Wildflowers

20130427-hiking-group-photo2.jpgThe forecast showed rain for Saturday’s wildflower hike on April 27, but even with the incoming deluge, ten rain-impervious souls showed up to enjoy a few of Spring’s fleeting treasures. The big rains were coming at two so we put on our water repelling soul-suits and set-off on our adventure.

Off we went into the light drizzle, pausing only to take a group photograph as evidence that we were in fact outside and not identifying flowers from laptops in warm, cozy beds. Ted Haddock and his family generously offered their beautiful property as a place to search for spring ephemerals. Glancing up the mountain, the whole group knew we were in for a real treat! The climb was steep but Josh Kelly, Western North Carolina Alliance’s Public Lands Biologist, always had the knack to point out another cool flower or the call of a bird mocking us from far above when the group began to lose its breath.
