It was a rather calm morning deep in the Pisgah National Forest. The anxious noise of the city was far from recollection, with only the rushing sounds of a nearby creek bubbling in our ears. Filled with excitement, I took a deep breath and inhaled the cool, damp, mountain air; this is my stomping ground. My name is Shaylyn (Sarge) Sargent, and the Clawhammer hike today was my first hike of the 2019-2020 AmeriCorps service term with SAHC.  I could barely keep my socks on. Due to the threat of storms, we had a small group — Israel and his friend Abby along with her black puppy, Prairie. Israel, a former SAHC hike leader, shared his experience with me as we set off down into the rhododendron depths of the forest cove. Read more

Join us for Highland Brewing Company’s Clawhammer Oktoberfest — celebrating the seasonal release of Clawhammer, a Märzen lager. Our Corporate Partners at Highland will donate $1 to SAHC per pint of Clawhammer poured during the release party!

The event runs from noon to 10 pm, with SAHC staff/volunteers on-site in the late afternoon/evening to share our “For Love of Beer & Mountains” merchandise, tell about our recent conservation projects, and answer questions about our work — and how our members and partners like HBC help protect important land and water resources in the mountains of WNC and TN.

There will be stein hoists, pretzels, sausages, and stein-making (sign-up ahead for this one!)

Clawhammer Oktoberfest Release Party

Location: Highland Brewing Company in Asheville, NC

When: Saturday, August 4 from noon to 10 pm

Highland Brewing Company’s Oktoberfest Marzen, is back for the 10th year! This Oktoberfestbier has been a favorite for the past decade and has won acclaim for being an authentic example of this traditional style. The brew is named for Clawhammer Mountain in Pisgah National Forest, as well as an old-time style of banjo picking.  HBC is celebrating Clawhammer’s return with a mustache contest!

A dollar from every pint of Clawhammer poured during the release party will be donated to SAHC to  support our efforts to preserve the natural beauty and land/water resources of the Southern Appalachians. In the afternoon, SAHC staff and volunteers will be onsite to answer questions about our work and sell “For Love of Beer & Mountains” conservation merchandise. Stop by and say hi!

We are grateful to Highland Brewing Company for supporting SAHC as a “For Love of Beer & Mountains” partner!

An Adventure to Twin Falls and Clawhammer

starting-off1.jpgSAHC and Highland Brewing Company would like to send a major “shout out” to all of the folks that made it to Twin Falls and Clawhammer Mountain the first weekend of October. This intrepid group showed copious amounts of fortitude and demonstrated the will power to make it to the promised land that weekend in Pisgah National Forest.

The hike started off typical. Everyone parked their cars, listened to SAHC’s typical spiel about why land conservation is important, and perhaps most importantly, signed off on the waiver so that there would be no legal drama if any accidents occurred during the hike. As we approached the Avery Creek Trail head, no one knew what lay lurking in the depths of the not-so-ominous and beautiful trail. Read more
