2021 Binge on Appalachia – Raffle to Support Conservation

This year we are hosting another raffle for the 2021 Bookwalter PopUp Binge! The PopUp Binge (PUB) is a self-supported bike ride that forms with very little notice where riders choose their own adventure routes. The ride will offer a variety of routes to choose from, with tough climbs that provide an epic challenge to all. The ride registration is free with suggested donations to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy.

Brent and Jamie Bookwalter founded the Bookwalter Binge Gran Fondo. Brent is an Olympian who represented the USA in both the time trial and road race in the Rio Olympics while also finishing his fourth Tour de France in the same season. Brent and his wife Jamie reside in Asheville, NC, and have a passion for protecting the environment. As such, all raffle proceeds will be donated to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, allowing us to continue our amazing work!

The raffle is accepting entries now through October 30th at 4:59 pm. On October 30th at 5:00 pm, winners will be drawn and notified.

Click here to view the raffle and enter for a chance to win one of the amazing prizes.

Click here if you are interested in more information on the PUB and registration details.

We’re so grateful to Brent and Jamie Bookwalter and the Binge community for their generous support over the past six years. Together, we can make a difference!

Thank you so much to all of our 2021 raffle sponsors!

Bookwalter Binge Gran Fondo 2019

Join Brent Bookwalter for the challenging Bookwalter Binge Gran Fondo, studded with bicycle racing on timed segments of tough climbs that provide an epic challenge to all. A perfect way to celebrate the end of the professional cycling racing season, by riding the routes Brent used for training earlier in the year.

Three routes of varying length traverse some of the most beautiful roads in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Brent’s home in Asheville, North Carolina:

  • Gran Route – 77 miles with 6,250 ft of climbing featuring three segments of gravel/dirt road
  • Medio Route – 55 miles with 4,500 ft of climbing
  • Piccolo Route – 39 miles with 2,850 ft of climbing

This is an unusual opportunity to ride alongside female and male pro cyclists as they celebrate the end of their season racing all over the world and the country. Our pros ride in casual-mode on all three routes, and along with Brent, they are inspired by cyclists of all backgrounds and abilities.

While the 39-mile Piccolo route is the perfect “first hard group ride”, the Medio and Gran routes are the perfect next-steps for gaining major bragging rights. When the spinning is done, everyone gathers at the finish to celebrate at the Binge Bash, a relaxed and family-friendly afternoon at Warren Wilson College. Great food & craft beer, friends, a peloton of Pros, prizes, raffle, and fun.

Bookwalter Binge Gran Fondo and Raffle

Despite a rainy day, the 2017 Bookwalter Binge Gran Fondo was a huge success, with about 200 cyclists enjoying the ride!  SAHC staff helped cheer on riders and hosted an exciting raffle at Pisgah Brewing for the Binge after-party.  Our Land Protection Director, Michelle Pugliese, rode in the Medio in costume as Wonder Woman.  While on the 62 mile ride she was able to point out SAHC conservation easements to other competitors.

To view the race results, visit: BookwalterBinge.com.

From proceeds of the raffle, we raised almost $2,000 for land and water conservation in the mountains of NC and TN. Thank you to everyone who participated in and supported Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy through the Bookwalter Binge Gran Fondo, and a special thanks to Brent and Jamie Bookwalter for choosing SAHC as the charity for the Binge!
