Stephens-Lee Bird Sanctuary Outing

In November, AmeriCorps member Whisper Moore led an afterschool group from Stephens-Lee Recreation Center to experience birding at the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary in North Asheville. In a previous afterschool session, Whisper had introduced students to migratory birds with the #GreatMigrationChallenge game. For this field trip, Bethany Sheffer and Simon Thompson of the Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society chapter joined us to share their expertise.

Bethany and Simon gave a brief lesson on birding and showed students how to use binoculars by spotting a particular point on a sign. Then they headed out together to spot some resident birds that stay at the Sanctuary year-round. As they ventured over to look at some Canada Geese across the waterway, one student exclaimed “Look at the mountains!” Read more

2018 Birds and Beer

Date: Tuesday May 22

Time: 4:00- 7:00 pm

Location: New Belgium Brewing Company, Asheville, NC

Cost: FREE for all participants. Registration is required.

Join us for our first “Birds and Beer” walk with New Belgium Brewing Company!

Have you ever wondered what species of birds live along the French Broad River? The “Birds and Beer” walk is a great way to learn about local birds while spending time at a fun brewery in Asheville. Our leisurely walk will take place along a 1-mile stretch of the French Broad River Greenway, just behind the New Belgium brewery. This walk is for beginner birders and is family friendly.

Working with the City of Asheville, this award-winning stretch of greenway was carefully designed by our corporate partners at Equinox Environmental with the values of New Belgium Brewing.  The greenway and brewery landscape design integrate stormwater management, stream restoration services, and natural corridors for local wildlife into an urban setting. Thanks to their conscious effort to preserve and improve urban habitats, we are able to view wildlife here daily!

Due to the educational nature of the walk, we will have two separate walks starting at different times to create smaller group sizes. Each group will be led by an experienced birder that will cover topics such as bird identification and birding basics.  Please indicate on the registration form below which time slot you prefer.

Group 1: 4:30-5:30

Group 2: 5:45-6:45

Before or after your walk, feel free grab a beer in the courtyard and stop by  the SAHC booth to learn more about our local conservation work and how you can get involved.

This event is BYOB (Bring your own Binoculars)

2018 Roan Highlands Birding Hike

Join us for a Spring Birding hike in the Roan Highlands! With its unique habitats, this area is known to be the nesting site of some rare migratory birds. SAHC works to maintain ideal habitats for these birds and we hope to observe a few on this hike!

The hike will be approximately 2 miles and it will travel through different habitats including open meadows, streams, and forested areas. There are a few gradual uphill sections on the trail, but overall it is a leisurely walk.  Along with observing the birds, we will be making an initial checklist of species seen for future outings on the property.

We will be hiking on our protected Elk Hollow property which is located approximately 1.5 hours from Asheville.  A carpool from Asheville will be organized to leave at 7:30 am and will arrive at the site around 9:00 am.

Tales from the Bird House

leefarese_intern.jpgEarlier this year, we welcomed a series of interns and researchers to the cabin at our 601-acre Grassy Ridge tract in the Highlands of Roan, dubbed ‘the Bird House’ because of the ubiquitous winged wildlife in this rich upland habitat. Lee Farese, one of our first visitors to the cabin, spent several weeks observing and photographing the tract. He recently shared this account of his stay… Read more
