SAHC works with landowners to determine the best ways to meet their needs, encouraging the use of conservation easements and other non-regulatory land conservation methods. We engage local communities in conservation and build partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies, as well as regional private and non-profit organizations, to facilitate land conservation in the region. Our outreach and access initiatives connect people with protected lands.

As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, we rely on the support of our members, philanthropic leaders, corporate/business partners, foundations, and other grant-funding entities to successfully continue our conservation efforts.

The natural assets we protect have helped this region become an international destination for hiking, biking, camping, boating, hunting, fishing, and more. Income from these activities is crucial to our rural mountain communities.  Protecting local farms ensures the continuation of  agricultural enterprises. Securing our natural resources and scenic views makes good sense economically!

A conservation easement is a legal agreement between a landowner and a land trust or government agency that permanently limits uses of the land in order to protect its conservation values. The landowner continues to own and use the land and can sell it or pass it on to heirs.

The Nature Conservancy works to protect land and waters in all 50 states  and in 27 countries.  SAHC strategically focuses our conservation work in Western North Carolina and East Tennessee, protecting the places you love in your own backyard.
