SUMMARY:2024 September Community Farm Tour
DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday\, September 17th\nTime: Starting at 9:30 AM\nWhere: SAHC Community Farm\nDistance: 2.5 miles\nDifficulty: Moderate (4/10)\, several steep inclines are present on the trail\nCost: Free for Members\, $10 for non-members\nJoin us for a scenic tour of SAHC’s Community Farm on a guided hike led by Farm and Food Program Manager\, Chris Link. Participants will hike along the The Discovery Trail\, a 2.5-mile loop that traverses through the forests and fields of the farm. Along the way\, we may encounter the resident Scottish Highland cow herd\, Texas longhorn cattle\, white-tailed deer\, red-tailed hawks\, and more as we make our way across the farm grounds. \nOur 140-acre Community Farm\, located just outside of Asheville\, is a dynamic hub for conservation projects and agricultural initiatives. An ideal place for photographers\, nature-lovers\, and individuals interested in regenerative agriculture\, our stream restoration project\, shortleaf pine reforestation project\, farm incubator program\, and education center\, are a few of the highlights. \nPlease be aware that the Community Farm is an active facility not open to the public without the accompaniment of SAHC staff. To ensure the safety of all participants\, maintain staff capacity\, and create a positive experience\, pre-registration for the hike is mandatory. Upon registration\, you will receive an email containing specific information about where to meet on the farm and other essential details. It’s crucial to note that a significant portion of the hike may not be disability accessible. \n

SUMMARY:2024 Clawhammer Hike with Highland Brewing
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, September 20th\nTime: 8:00 am\nWhere: Pisgah National Forest near Brevard\, NC\nDistance:  10+ miles\nDifficulty: Very strenuous (10+ mile hike with significant elevation change)\nCost: FREE for all participants (pre-registration is required)\nKick-off Clawtoberfest with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy by joining us to celebrate our “For Love of Beer and Mountains” partnerships!  We’re hitting the trails for an annual 10+ mile trek to the summit of Clawhammer Mountain\, namesake of Highland Brewing Company’s seasonal Clawhammer Oktoberfest Lager\, where stunning views and crisp mountain air await.  One of the longer\, more challenging hikes that we offer throughout the year\, we will follow along multi-use trails that traverse mountain bike\, equestrian\, and hiking trails as well as forest service roads.  Prepare to hike a steep climb along a creek\, through wildflower patches and rich cove forest.  From Clawhammer Cove to the summit\, we will climb close to 1\,900 feet to finish at 4\,072ft elevation. The cliff-top view at the summit offers scenic views of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Looking Glass in Pisgah National Forest. \nThis hike is part of our corporate partnership with Highland Brewing Company in Asheville\, NC.  Highland donates a portion of sales of seasonal releases during the “release party” at the Tasting Room in Asheville to support SAHC’s land and water conservation efforts\, and we lead guided hikes for folks to experience and enjoy the natural landscapes for which these seasonal brews are named. \nPlease Note: There are a couple of single log bridges\, muddy areas\, rocky and steep inclines and a chance of yellow jackets; SAHC wants to provide a fun and safe trip so please be aware of these conditions. \nWhat To Bring: Hiking boots\, hiking poles (optional)\, packed lunch\, 2 liters of water\, jacket/rain gear.  Please be sure to check the weather forecast and bring appropriate layers. \nDogs: Well-behaved dogs are welcome\, but must be kept on a leash. \nLeader: Justin Tucker\, Outreach Program Manager.  For questions or more info\, contact Justin at justin@appalachian.org \n
