DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, April 18th\n\nFrom: 1 pm to 3 pm\nLocation: SAHC Community Farm\nTropical perennials can be stunning plants offering a diverse diet for a changing climate. Join The Utopian Seed Project’s Chris Smith in a workshop that will cover the complete growing cycle\, including storage and re-sprouting for a range of crops including: taro\, arrowroot\, yacon\, turmeric\, ginger\, water chestnut\, chayote\, sweet potato\, ube\, and cassava. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n#ClimateAction begins at home – or in your home garden! Join us on Thursday April 18 (1-3 pm) for a special Farm Education Workshop\, as Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy teams up with award-winning growers from The Utopian Seed Project at the SAHC Community Farm in Alexander\, NC. Learn about tropical perennials that thrive in the Appalachian mountains. You can grow tropical perennials as temperate zone annuals – reducing the impact of importing goods from far away AND creating a more diverse\, resilient food system in your local community. This workshop will be appropriate for multiple scales of production – for everyone from the home gardener to commercial operations. \n“Adapting growing techniques to the region creates a high level of climate resilience; it’s one of the best ways to respond to climate change\,” says SAHC Community Farm Manager Chris Link. “These varieties are selected for their ability to grow in our local environment\, and to withstand the fluctuations of weather extremes. Come to the workshop and learn how to adapt new food crops to our region for more resilient food systems that can handle the stress of a varying climate.” \nThe Utopian Seed Project is experimenting with open-field cultivation\, not greenhouse production\, so growing these crops is accessible to everyone. It’s planting time\, so we’ll have plenty of show and tell to explore these crops! \nPre-registration is requested. SUMMARY:2024 Garlic Mustard Pull on Roan Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Location: Meet at the Conference Center Parking Lot – Roan Mountain State Park in Roan Mountain\, TN\nDate: Friday\, April 26th\nStart time: 9:30 am\n  \nSAHC is partnering with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy\, Roan Mountain State Park\, and the Cherokee National Forest to remove invasive garlic mustard from the Park and heavily trafficked highways around Carver’s Gap and SAHC conservation properties in the Highlands of Roan. Plucking out the pesky invaders when they’re young and tender isn’t hard work\, but it does take a lot of hands! \nFood/Drinks: Please bring your own snacks\, lunch\, and bottled water. Lunch is not provided. Water and light snacks are available from the Conference Center vending machines. \nEquipment/Precautions: Work gloves and trash bags will be provided. Feel free to bring personal gloves or a trowel. Pulling garlic mustard is usually easy\, but a trowel can be helpful for compacted roadside soil and stubborn roots. \nYou will need: a hat and/or sunscreen\, long pants\, sturdy shoes\, lunch\, water\, a warm layer for high elevation hiking\, and rain gear. If you are allergic to poison ivy\, consider wearing long sleeves and pants as a precaution. \nIt may be difficult to return to your car while we are working\, so you may want a bag to keep your items with you throughout the day. Some work sites are very steep. Please let me know before the workday if you prefer to work on flatter terrain or have medical conditions. DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, April 27th\nTime: Starting at 10:30 AM\nWhere: Popper Tract\nDistance: 3 miles\nDifficulty: (6/10 difficulty) Moderate. Several steep inclines and stream-crossings\nCost: FREE\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\n  \nWe invite you to join us for a memorial hike to honor and remember our friend Bill Popper and his dedication to preserving the 573-acre Prices Creek Preserve in Yancey County that he loved so much.  \nThis hike is a perennial favorite\, taking participants through our Price’s Creek Preserve where an astounding array of ephemeral wildflowers can be found this time of year. Participants will hike through mature northern hardwood forest along a trail following the babbling Price’s Creek. Midway along the trail – a spur trail leads up to a picturesque cascade where we will stop for a leisurely picnic lunch. \nNOTE: Due to limited parking availability\, we will be hard capping this hike at 12 participants. Please register each party member individually to ensure we do not go over this number.  \nWe will meet at a public parking area before carpooling to Price’s Creek Preserve.
