SUMMARY:2024 Land Trust Day - Snowball Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, June 1st\nTime: 10:30am\nWhere: Snowball Mountain Trailhead\, off the Blue Ridge Parkway\nDistance: 3 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: $10 for non-members\, FREE for members\nJoin Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a hike to the protected Snowball Mountain. The first Saturday of June each year is Land Trust Day. On this day businesses and land trusts across North Carolina have come together to celebrate conservation. Land Trust Day highlights the important role that protected lands and the outdoors play in our communities. \nThis moderate 3-mile hike will take hikers along a high elevation ridge line with remarkable views. We will start out on the Mountains-to-Sea trail and split off to climb Snowball Mountain. Next\, we will continue North to Hawkbill Rock where we will look back onto the property and into the Woodfin Watershed— another SAHC-protected landmark. Hikers should be prepared for a short trip\, but steep elevation changes along the way. Snowball Mountain was one of the marquee parcels that pushed SAHC past the 50\,000-acre milestone mark at the end of 2011. \nCome and enjoy this beautiful property and learn about SAHC’s projects in this spectacular area of the Black Mountain range. In 2012\, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased 90 acres on Snowball Mountain in Buncombe County\, permanently preserving scenic views for recreational visitors\, clean water sources for area residents\, and habitat for native species. Nestled in the beautiful Craggy Mountains\, this tract is highly visible from the Blue Ridge Parkway and national forest land\, and it adjoins the publicly accessible Snowball Mountain Trail and Camp Sequoyah Trail. \nSAHC’s Snowball Mountain tract joins a significant swath of state and federal protected land\, contributing another piece to a vast network of over 125\,000 acres of contiguous protected forestlands. The trail overlooks national forest land and the Woodfin Watershed\, which contains the headwaters to Reems Creek Watershed\, which SAHC protects with a conservation easement. \nWhat To Bring: hiking shoes\, lunch\, water\, jacket/rain gear\, camera\, and please dress in layers. \nDogs: Dogs are allowed. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to katie@appalachian.org. \nThis hike is FULL! Thank you for your interest in our Outings Program guided hikes. We hope to see you on the next one!

SUMMARY:2024 Land Trust Day
DESCRIPTION:On Land Trust Day – this year Saturday\, June 1 – local businesses pledge to donate a portion of sales to support Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy’s ongoing land and water conservation efforts. \nLand Trust Day coincides with National Trails Day and is celebrated each year on the first Saturday of June to recognize the accomplishments of land trusts in our region. Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy works with partners in the U.S. Forest Service and national park system to protect land for public enjoyment along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail\, the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail\, the Mountains-to-Sea Trail\, trails accessible off the Blue Ridge Parkway\, and many more. We preserve large viewsheds enjoyed by visitors to public lands and trails in the mountains of NC and TN\, as well as local farms that support the farm-to-table sector of our regional economy. Land Trust Day is an opportunity for local businesses to recognize the impact of land trusts like SAHC on our state and local economies\, and to ‘give back’ by supporting ongoing conservation of natural resources – a major economic engine for WNC and East TN. \n\nEach business that participates in Land Trust Day pledges to donate a percentage of sales from this day\, or a lump sum donation\, in support and recognition of Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy’s efforts. \n“Each year as we approach Land Trust Day\, it is our hope that by working together we can help people understand that we must preserve our environment – its beauty\, its water\, its open spaces\, its inhabitants. It is what gives us life\, both literally and figuratively\,” says Lisa Cooper at Mast General Store. \n  \nPlease mark your calendars and plan to shop and dine to support conservation! Thank you to our 2024 Land Trust Day Sponsors:\n\n\nAsheville and Waynesville stores

SUMMARY:2024 Lamar Alexander Rocky Fork State Park Hike
DESCRIPTION:  \nPhoto by: Woody Eisenberg \n  \nDate: Saturday\, March 23rd\nTime: Starting at 10:30 am\nWhere: Lamar Alexander Rocky Fork State Park\nDistance: ~8 miles\nDifficulty: Difficult (7/10)\, several steep inclines are present on the trail\nCost: Free but registration is required\n  \nCome join SAHC and folks from the Friends of Rocky Fork for a guided hike in this stunning Tennessee state park! This special hike will begin in the parking area\, hike along crystal clear streams\, traverse mountainsides\, cross historic sites\, and ultimately hit the Appalachian Trail before returning to our starting point. These trails are all beautifully designed and crafted by the Rocky Fork Gorillas and members of the Friends of Rocky Fork. These members have also volunteered to lead the way through this wild landscape and highlight historic events. \nRocky Fork State Park is named after the cool waters that run down its center and is located along the Appalachian Trail corridor and the Tennessee-North Carolina border\, between Johnson City\, TN and Asheville\, NC.   The property is adjacent to more than 22\,000 acres of U.S. Forest Service-designated wilderness. Before Rocky Fork’s acquisition by The Conservation Fund and U.S. Forest Service\, it was one of the largest unprotected tracts in the southern Appalachian Mountains. From 2006-2012\, SAHC lobbied congress to secure funding to protect 10\,000 acres of the Rocky Fork watershed that was previously slated for development. With help from Senator Lamar Alexander and many other partners\, SAHC secured funding\, and the property was acquired from a timbering company. Come join us for this hike as we celebrate all that we’ve accomplished together! \n  \nThis hike is currently full. If you would like to be added to the waitlist\, please send your name\, email\, phone number\, and emergency contact to katie@appalachian.org. Thank you for being interested in hiking with us!

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Feb. 29 from 10 am to 4 pm \nAgroforestry and food forests are terms describing a diverse planting of edible plants that attempts to mimic the ecosystems and patterns found in nature for a variety of social and environmental benefits. If you don’t know much about agroforestry\, we have great news — we are starting our second agroforestry project at the SAHC Community Farm. \nAlong with Contour Lines Corp we will be leading the planting of a 3-acre diversified food forest which will feature a number of fruit trees and native support trees planted on contour in a system of berms and swales.  This is a unique demonstration project on conservation land\, which will be managed in perpetuity so that we can all learn about the numerous benefits and beauty of perennial agroforestry and food forest systems. \nFolks will receive a solid introduction on how to plan and plant a food forest agroforestry site that includes hundreds of fruit and support trees on a berm and swale contour system. Some species we will be planting include Black Locust\, Willow\, Cottonwood\, Elderberry\, Mulberry\, Persimmon\, Apple\, Pear\, Blueberry\, Fig and Peaches. \nJoin us\, rain or shine\, for all or any part of the day to learn\, observe\, and take part in planting if you choose. Please bring a water bottle\, gloves\, raincoat/work clothes if you’re planting; tools will be provided. \nLunch will be provided midway between our morning classroom portion\, and then the rest of the day will be hands-on work. \nLocation: SAHC Community Farm at 180 Mag Sluder Road\, Alexander\, NC 28701 \nQuestions: Contact Community Farm Manager Chris Link at chris@appalachian.org. \nPre-registration is requested. Suggested donation $20; no one turned away for inability to pay. \nSAHC received a $6\,000 Catalyzing Agroforestry Grant to support this project\, and nonprofit organization Contour Lines  Corp. (contourlines.org) is donating plant material\, design and expertise for hands-on workshops to help execute the silvopasture project on the SAHC Community Farm. The Catalyzing Agroforestry Grants Program is an initiative funded by the Appalachian Beginning Forest Farming Coalition (ABFFC) and Edwards Mother Earth Foundation (EMEF) that is managed by Virginia Tech University in partnership with Rural Action\, Appalachian Sustainable Development\, The Yew Mountain Center\, North Carolina State University. \nRegister for Workshop\n\n\nSAHC Community Farm work is funded in part by grants from The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina\, a grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program (under grant award number 2021-70033-35717)\, and a cost-share grant from USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

SUMMARY:2023 Autumn Birding with Blue Ridge Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, September 15th\nTime: 8:30am\nWhere: Ridge Junction Overlook\, Blue Ridge Parkway\nDistance:  NO hiking involved\, walking is limited\nDifficulty: Easy (1/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants\nJoin the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy  and the Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter for a morning of birding along the Blue Ridge Parkway. During September many of our beloved birds of summer will be migrating through this exact location on Mount Mitchell\, the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River. After days of flying south\, migratory birds can easily be found at this location on the Blue Ridge Parkway temporarily resting their wings along their journey to Central and South America. We will gather first thing in the morning to witness these beautiful animals before they disappear from the Southern Appalachian mountains for the winter. \nThis special experience is being made possible by our partner and friends at the Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter (BRAC)\, who have long supported SAHC’s land protection efforts to conserve critical bird habitat throughout the Southern Appalachians. The BRAC have kindly offered their time and expertise to lead this outing to help participants properly see and identify birds. A limited number of binoculars will be provided to attendees. Early bird gets the worm! \nWhat To Bring: close-toed shoes\, a snack\, water\, jacket/rain gear\, camera\, and binoculars. Extras binoculars will be available if you don’t have any. Please dress in layers\, the weather can be much cooler at this elevation during September. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to katie@appalachian.org. \nCost – Free for everyone. Pre-registration is required.

SUMMARY:2023 Year of the Trail - Snowball Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, September 8th\nTime: 10:30am\nWhere: Snowball Mountain off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Craggy Gardens Picnic Area\nDistance: 3 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: Free for Members. $10 for non-members.\nJoin Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a hike to the protected Snowball Mountain. This hike will celebrate the 2023 Year of the Trail to help interested residents\, visitors and trails enthusiasts in the area (and across the state) find and attend events\, connect with others\, and learn more about advocating for trails in NC. \nThis moderate 3-mile hike will take hikers along a high elevation ridgeline with remarkable views. The trail overlooks national forest land and the Woodfin Watershed\, which SAHC protects with a conservation easement. \nWhat To Bring: hiking shoes\, lunch\, water\, jacket/rain gear\, camera\, and please dress in layers. \nDogs: Dogs are allowed. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to katie@appalachian.org. \nCost – $10 or Free to Members. Pre-registration is required. \nRegistration FULL\nThank you for your interest in this hike; however\, this hike is currently full. If you would like to be added to a wait list for this hike\, please email hike leader AmeriCorps Community Engagement and Education member Katie Greer at katie@appalachian.org.
