SUMMARY:2024 Clawhammer Hike with Highland Brewing
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, September 20th\nTime: 8:00 am\nWhere: Pisgah National Forest near Brevard\, NC\nDistance:  10+ miles\nDifficulty: Very strenuous (10+ mile hike with significant elevation change)\nCost: FREE for all participants (pre-registration is required)\nKick-off Clawtoberfest with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy by joining us to celebrate our “For Love of Beer and Mountains” partnerships!  We’re hitting the trails for an annual 10+ mile trek to the summit of Clawhammer Mountain\, namesake of Highland Brewing Company’s seasonal Clawhammer Oktoberfest Lager\, where stunning views and crisp mountain air await.  One of the longer\, more challenging hikes that we offer throughout the year\, we will follow along multi-use trails that traverse mountain bike\, equestrian\, and hiking trails as well as forest service roads.  Prepare to hike a steep climb along a creek\, through wildflower patches and rich cove forest.  From Clawhammer Cove to the summit\, we will climb close to 1\,900 feet to finish at 4\,072ft elevation. The cliff-top view at the summit offers scenic views of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Looking Glass in Pisgah National Forest. \nThis hike is part of our corporate partnership with Highland Brewing Company in Asheville\, NC.  Highland donates a portion of sales of seasonal releases during the “release party” at the Tasting Room in Asheville to support SAHC’s land and water conservation efforts\, and we lead guided hikes for folks to experience and enjoy the natural landscapes for which these seasonal brews are named. \nPlease Note: There are a couple of single log bridges\, muddy areas\, rocky and steep inclines and a chance of yellow jackets; SAHC wants to provide a fun and safe trip so please be aware of these conditions. \nWhat To Bring: Hiking boots\, hiking poles (optional)\, packed lunch\, 2 liters of water\, jacket/rain gear.  Please be sure to check the weather forecast and bring appropriate layers. \nDogs: Well-behaved dogs are welcome\, but must be kept on a leash. \nLeader: Justin Tucker\, Outreach Program Manager.  For questions or more info\, contact Justin at justin@appalachian.org \n

DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday\, August 29th\nTime: Starting at 10:00am\nWhere: Blue Hole Falls\, Carter County\, TN\nDifficulty: Moderate (5/10): prepare for a short walk (.3 mi) down a steep slope on uneven terrain with many slick roots and slippery stairs  \nCost: Free \nCome be a part of making Blue Hole Falls shine brighter than ever!  Join SAHC for a late summer splashdown and trash clean-up to help keep this popular natural gem pristine.  After we tidy up\, stick around for a refreshing swim and bring a lunch to enjoy the beauty of the falls.  Get ready to meet fellow nature lovers\, contribute to environmental conservation\, and have some fun in the process.  Trash bags and gloves will be provided—just bring your enthusiasm and a swimsuit! \nAbout Blue Hole Falls:\nThe Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased 29 acres in Carter County\, TN near the Blue Hole Falls recreation area.  The land adjoins Cherokee National Forest on three sides\, with the upper part of Mill Creek running through the property and into Blue Hole Falls downstream.  This public recreation area sees many visitors on hot\, summer days with people seeking an accessible place to cool off and enjoy nature.  The water flowing through SAHC’s preserve and into the waterfall is classified at “Exceptional TN Waters\,” containing naturally reproducing trout.  Conservation of the property will help protect water quality in trout waters and downstream in Blue Hole Falls\, as well as scenic views from the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.  We will soon transfer the tract to the U.S. Forest Service to become part of Cherokee National Forest. \n  \n

This hike is rated as moderate with a few steep sections\, uneven ground\, and hot weather. Please come prepared with sturdy footwear\, plenty of water\, and snacks. \n\nHikers will climb nearly 900 feet in elevation to a rocky outcrop overlooking the southern portion of the preserve before returning to the cool\, shaded groves of a rich cove forest. Meandering through the rhododendron and oaks\, Park will interpret the ancient and modern history of the rocks that form the foundations of our majestic Southern Appalachians. Participants will see and feel examples of what built these peaks\, and explore the abandoned ruins of a mine that was carved into them.\n \n\nBecause of the moderate terrain and educational aspect of the hike\, SAHC is limiting it to 20 participants. DESCRIPTION:Birding in the Highlands of Roan\nDate: 6/15/2024\nTime: 8:30 am\nLeaders: Joe McGuiness\, Biologist with the Cherokee National Forest & Marquette Crockett\, SAHC Director of Roan Stewardship\nMeeting Location: The Spear Country Store\, 5810 US-19E\, Newland\, NC 28657\nDistance: 1 mile\nDifficulty: Easy (2/10)\nCost: FREE\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nWe will need to carpool to the site from Spear Country Store. Arrive early and grab some coffee or a biscuit! Please park in the back at the request of the store manager. \nWe will drive from here into the Roan Mountain Important Bird Area\, traveling up through SAHC’s Yellow Mountain Connector Property\, 456 acres which joins North Carolina’s Yellow Mountain State Natural Area to create an unbroken swath of mature forest and rushing streams. As we drive\, we may hear forest interior birds like Scarlet Tanager\, Ovenbird\, Veery\, Black-throated Green and Blue Warblers\, and others. Turk’s Cap lily\, Black Cohosh\, and Purple Flowering Raspberry dot the roadsides.\n\nArriving at SAHC’s 336-acre Cane Creek Preserve and Life Estate\, which sits near 4500 feet in elevation\, we will spend time birding in the wildlife meadow\, looking for early successional species. Then we will hike about 0.5 mile through Montane Oak habitats looking for high elevation forest birds. We will have lunch in a second set of meadows and hike back to the car. This site is approximately 25 minutes from the Drop-In social at our Elk Hollow Preserve\, where we hope you will join us afterwards for refreshments!\nRegistration for this event is now closed.

SUMMARY:2024 Land Trust Day - Snowball Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, June 1st\nTime: 10:30am\nWhere: Snowball Mountain Trailhead\, off the Blue Ridge Parkway\nDistance: 3 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: $10 for non-members\, FREE for members\nJoin Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a hike to the protected Snowball Mountain. The first Saturday of June each year is Land Trust Day. On this day businesses and land trusts across North Carolina have come together to celebrate conservation. Land Trust Day highlights the important role that protected lands and the outdoors play in our communities. \nThis moderate 3-mile hike will take hikers along a high elevation ridge line with remarkable views. We will start out on the Mountains-to-Sea trail and split off to climb Snowball Mountain. Next\, we will continue North to Hawkbill Rock where we will look back onto the property and into the Woodfin Watershed— another SAHC-protected landmark. Hikers should be prepared for a short trip\, but steep elevation changes along the way. Snowball Mountain was one of the marquee parcels that pushed SAHC past the 50\,000-acre milestone mark at the end of 2011. \nCome and enjoy this beautiful property and learn about SAHC’s projects in this spectacular area of the Black Mountain range. In 2012\, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased 90 acres on Snowball Mountain in Buncombe County\, permanently preserving scenic views for recreational visitors\, clean water sources for area residents\, and habitat for native species. Nestled in the beautiful Craggy Mountains\, this tract is highly visible from the Blue Ridge Parkway and national forest land\, and it adjoins the publicly accessible Snowball Mountain Trail and Camp Sequoyah Trail. \nSAHC’s Snowball Mountain tract joins a significant swath of state and federal protected land\, contributing another piece to a vast network of over 125\,000 acres of contiguous protected forestlands. The trail overlooks national forest land and the Woodfin Watershed\, which contains the headwaters to Reems Creek Watershed\, which SAHC protects with a conservation easement. \nWhat To Bring: hiking shoes\, lunch\, water\, jacket/rain gear\, camera\, and please dress in layers. \nDogs: Dogs are allowed. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to katie@appalachian.org. \nThis hike is FULL! SUMMARY:Flying Squirrel Ten Miler
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Blue Ridge Mountains with the Flying Squirrel Ten Miler\, Asheville’s premier 10 Mile road race. Enjoy the ease and convenience of a road race with the spectacular views and seclusion of a mountain race. The race starts and finishes just blocks from downtown Asheville and then promptly takes runners on the winding roads of Town Mountain. Participants will enjoy shaded mountain roads typically only used by locals\, such as the beautiful Sunset Drive and Patton Mountain Road. One thing about The Flying Squirrel Ten Miler is sure: you’ve got to “earn” those views. The Blue Ridge mountains are hilly and so is the Flying Squirrel Ten Miler! \nRegistration is $55 for this race – and price increases after April 28. \nSouthern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy is thrilled to be a nonprofit beneficiary of this race.

DESCRIPTION:On Land Trust Day – this year Saturday\, June 1 – local businesses pledge to donate a portion of sales to support Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy’s ongoing land and water conservation efforts. \nLand Trust Day coincides with National Trails Day and is celebrated each year on the first Saturday of June to recognize the accomplishments of land trusts in our region. Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy works with partners in the U.S. Forest Service and national park system to protect land for public enjoyment along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail\, the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail\, the Mountains-to-Sea Trail\, trails accessible off the Blue Ridge Parkway\, and many more. We preserve large viewsheds enjoyed by visitors to public lands and trails in the mountains of NC and TN\, as well as local farms that support the farm-to-table sector of our regional economy. Few things represent better our dedication to conservation\, past\, present\, and future\, than this special location. This community-oriented\, walk in the woods will be hosted immediately following our 50th Anniversary Campaign Kick-off event at the I-26 Welcome Center\, located 10 minutes away. Guests have the option to join us for the event and the hike\, or just the hike! \nThe hike will start at the parking area and walk along the crystal clear Rocky Fork River for .8 miles to the historic Flint Creek Battle Site. Here we will be joined by members of the Friends of Rocky Fork who will provide us with the special history of the area. From here folks will have the option to return to their cars\, hike further into the park to the Appalachian Trail\, or explore the Whitehouse Cliffs Trail. She spent a successful 30-year career as a biologist and senior executive in the federal government as the FWS Chief of Staff\, Assistant Director of Habitat Conservation/Head of Fisheries. \nDr. Parker made history serving as the first African American FWS Regional Director of the 13 Northeastern states after working in the Great Lakes and Big Rivers regions and in the southeastern United States. While serving as board chair of Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries Commission\, the board passed a diversity resolution that’s become a model for other states\, changed the board name from “game” to wildlife\, and protected migratory birds threatened by major bridge construction. Instead of “rubber-stamping” a project that would have displaced many birds (allowed under the weakening of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act)\, the Department drafted a  regulations to protect migratory birds across Virginia. He’s been a fellow at Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony\, and he teaches fiction writing and literature at the University of North Carolina-Asheville. He lives in North Carolina with his wife\, photographer Mallory Cash\, and their daughters. Cash’s short stories and essays have appeared in The Oxford American\, Garden & Gun\, Our State Magazine\, and other publications\, and his fiction has been adapted for the stage and film. He graduated from Stanford University in 1984 with a BA in History\, and the University of Alabama Law School in 1988. Carl practiced law in Seattle before moving to Asheville in 1995. Carl serves on the Claims Committee of Terrafirma Risk Retention Group. Terrafirma is a charitable risk pool created by the national Land Trust Alliance to insure its members against the legal costs of defending conservation interests. With 24 years of experience as Executive Director of SAHC\, Carl has guided staff through countless obstacles and navigated successful conservation outcomes for some of the most exciting and worthwhile projects in our 50-year history.
