SUMMARY:2025 Appalachia Day Hike to Blue Ridge Pastures
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, April 26th\nTime: 8:30am\nWhere: Strawberry Gap to Blue Ridge Pastures\nDistance: 6 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: Free for Members. $10 for non-members.\nCome kick off Appalachia Day with Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy by joining us on the morning of April 26th for a hike to Blue Ridge Pastures via the Strawberry Gap Trail. Participants will hike a moderately strenuous 6 mile out-and-back through a beautiful forest while taking in sweeping views of Fairview\, NC before arriving at the remote Blue Ridge Pastures. Despite a mostly uphill 3-mile climb\, hikers will be rewarded with dramatic views of the Hickory Nut Gorge\, Bearwallow Mountain\, Little Pisgah Mountain\, and in the distance the highest mountains in the eastern United States.  \nThis trail is made possible through a partnership between two local land trusts – Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) and Conserving Carolina. SAHC owns Strawberry Gap Preserve and worked with multiple private landowners to protect this beautiful mountain land with conservation easements. Conserving Carolina then built the trail\, which connects to Trombatore Trail at Blue Ridge Pastures. This brings us to more than 16 miles of connected trails in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge!  \n*Please note that Strawberry Gap passes through privately owned land and dogs are not allowed on this trail.  \nCost – $10 or Free to Members. Registration for this event will close at end of day on Thursday\, April 23rd. \n

SUMMARY:2025 Hike Series: Kephart Prong Trail [Rescheduled Date]
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, April 5th\nTime: Starting at 10:00 am\nWhere: Great Smoky Mountains National Park\nDistance:  4.5 miles\nDifficulty: Difficult (7/10)\, several steep inclines are present on the trail\nCost: Free\, though pre-registration is required\nJoin Us for a Guided Hike at Great Smoky Mountain NP – Saturday\, April 5th \nOur previously-planned hike along The Kephart Prong Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has been rescheduled to Saturday\, April 5 due to inclement weather.  This trail offers a scenic and historically rich hike\, leading to the Kephart Shelter.  We’ll begin with a footbridge crossing the Oconaluftee River and then navigate past the remnants of a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp from the Great Depression era.  Here\, you’ll find the chimney of the camp barracks\, rock framing for a signboard\, and remnants of a water fountain.  The CCC camp\, which operated between 1933 and 1942\, played a significant role in the construction of park roads\, footbridges\, and other structures\, some of which are still visible today. \nContinuing along the trail\, hikers will cross several more footbridges and climb steadily up the southern slopes of Mount Kephart.  At 2.1 miles\, you’ll reach the Kephart Shelter\, located at the junction of multiple trails\, where you can enjoy beautiful views and historical insights.  This area is named for Horace Kephart\, a key advocate for the Smoky Mountains National Park\, whose contributions to the park’s preservation and mountain culture are celebrated here.  Whether you’re exploring the rich history or simply soaking in the natural beauty\, the Kephart Prong Trail is a rewarding hike for outdoor enthusiasts \nWhile the Kephart Prong Trail is open to the public\, pre-registration is required for this guided hike.  Upon registration\, you’ll receive a confirmation email along with detailed information about the meeting location and event specifics 24-48 hours prior to the hike.  Please note that this hike is not wheelchair accessible\, so participants should be prepared for a moderate trail experience. \nFor more information and resources on Kephart Prong Trail\, visit: NPS Kephart Prong Resource \nRegistration for this event will close at end of day on Thursday\, April 3rd. SUMMARY:2024 Lunch and Learn: Elk Habitat Management
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lunch & Learn: Elk Habitat Management with Wildlife Biologist Justin McVey\nWednesday\, November 20 at 12:00 pm EST\nJoin NC Wildlife Resources Commission‘s Wildlife Biologist Justin McVey and SAHC’s Stewardship Director Sarah Sheeran for a virtual Lunch & Learn about Elk\, their habitat\, and ongoing research and management at SAHC’s Stevens Creek Preserve adjoining Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In 2001\, 52 Rocky Mountain Elk were released into Cataloochee Valley as part of an experimental program to reintroduce elk to the park. Native elk had been eliminated from the region by over-hunting and loss of habitat. A 2022 DNA study estimated there are now approximately 240 elk in Western North Carolina. \nClick HERE to Register \nIn 2023\, SAHC’s partners at NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) received grant funding to improve elk habitat on SAHC-owned land on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. SAHC’s 147-acre Stevens Creek Preserve\, located at the northern end of Cataloochee Ridge in Haywood County\, was purchased in 2017 to protect habitat for elk\, turkey\, deer and other wildlife\, to protect water resources\, and to provide a buffer on the edge of the national park. \n“We had noticed a few elk using the Stevens Creek tract\, mostly bachelors\,” said Justin McVey\, District Biologist with NCWRC. “However\, more elk which have been living just over the ridge since the release have not used the tract. We were curious – ‘why not?’ We wondered if the open areas on SAHC’s tract were converted to native grasses and plants\, would more female and young elk come onto that property? It’s so beautiful\, just a gorgeous little valley\, and we’d love to see more elk using that space. The elk population is slowly growing\, and we have high hopes that if we continue to create quality habitat we will increase the number of elk.” \nWith that in mind\, NCWRC applied for a grant from Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to support removing non-native plants in favor of native vegetation on SAHC’s property at Stevens Creek. In conjunction with the grant for habitat management\, they secured funds to put radio collars on elk to track their movements and see if more elk use SAHC’s property. SUMMARY:2024 Lunch and Learn: MountainTrue
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lunch & Learn: MountainTrue’s Neighbors for More Neighbors WNC\nThursday\, September 12 at 12:00 pm EST\nWhy should environmentalists support building more housing? Join MountainTrue’s Housing & Transportation Director Susan Bean as she explores the answers to this question. \nWe know that healthy communities exist within the context of a healthy environment — and right now\, both are threatened. There is a housing shortage across the country creating an urgent need to build more homes. There is also a climate crisis\, with greenhouse gas emissions threatening the stability of all our planet’s ecosystems and biodiversity. How and where our communities build these much needed homes for families will have implications for our carbon footprint. Join us to learn more about MountainTrue’s newest program\, Neighbors for More Neighbors WNC\, and about part of the solution to both these crises. \nClick HERE to Register \n

SUMMARY:2024 Land Trust Day - Snowball Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, June 1st\nTime: 10:30am\nWhere: Snowball Mountain Trailhead\, off the Blue Ridge Parkway\nDistance: 3 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: $10 for non-members\, FREE for members\nJoin Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a hike to the protected Snowball Mountain. The first Saturday of June each year is Land Trust Day. On this day businesses and land trusts across North Carolina have come together to celebrate conservation. Land Trust Day highlights the important role that protected lands and the outdoors play in our communities. \nThis moderate 3-mile hike will take hikers along a high elevation ridge line with remarkable views. We will start out on the Mountains-to-Sea trail and split off to climb Snowball Mountain. Next\, we will continue North to Hawkbill Rock where we will look back onto the property and into the Woodfin Watershed— another SAHC-protected landmark. Hikers should be prepared for a short trip\, but steep elevation changes along the way. Snowball Mountain was one of the marquee parcels that pushed SAHC past the 50\,000-acre milestone mark at the end of 2011. \nCome and enjoy this beautiful property and learn about SAHC’s projects in this spectacular area of the Black Mountain range. In 2012\, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased 90 acres on Snowball Mountain in Buncombe County\, permanently preserving scenic views for recreational visitors\, clean water sources for area residents\, and habitat for native species. Nestled in the beautiful Craggy Mountains\, this tract is highly visible from the Blue Ridge Parkway and national forest land\, and it adjoins the publicly accessible Snowball Mountain Trail and Camp Sequoyah Trail. \nSAHC’s Snowball Mountain tract joins a significant swath of state and federal protected land\, contributing another piece to a vast network of over 125\,000 acres of contiguous protected forestlands. The trail overlooks national forest land and the Woodfin Watershed\, which contains the headwaters to Reems Creek Watershed\, which SAHC protects with a conservation easement. \nWhat To Bring: hiking shoes\, lunch\, water\, jacket/rain gear\, camera\, and please dress in layers. \nDogs: Dogs are allowed. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to katie@appalachian.org. \nThis hike is FULL! Thank you for your interest in our Outings Program guided hikes. We hope to see you on the next one!

SUMMARY:2024 Land Trust Day
DESCRIPTION:On Land Trust Day – this year Saturday\, June 1 – local businesses pledge to donate a portion of sales to support Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy’s ongoing land and water conservation efforts. \nLand Trust Day coincides with National Trails Day and is celebrated each year on the first Saturday of June to recognize the accomplishments of land trusts in our region. Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy works with partners in the U.S. Forest Service and national park system to protect land for public enjoyment along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail\, the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail\, the Mountains-to-Sea Trail\, trails accessible off the Blue Ridge Parkway\, and many more. We preserve large viewsheds enjoyed by visitors to public lands and trails in the mountains of NC and TN\, as well as local farms that support the farm-to-table sector of our regional economy. Land Trust Day is an opportunity for local businesses to recognize the impact of land trusts like SAHC on our state and local economies\, and to ‘give back’ by supporting ongoing conservation of natural resources – a major economic engine for WNC and East TN. \n\nEach business that participates in Land Trust Day pledges to donate a percentage of sales from this day\, or a lump sum donation\, in support and recognition of Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy’s efforts. \n“Each year as we approach Land Trust Day\, it is our hope that by working together we can help people understand that we must preserve our environment – its beauty\, its water\, its open spaces\, its inhabitants. It is what gives us life\, both literally and figuratively\,” says Lisa Cooper at Mast General Store. \n  \nPlease mark your calendars and plan to shop and dine to support conservation! Thank you to our 2024 Land Trust Day Sponsors:\n\n\nAsheville and Waynesville stores
