SUMMARY:2025 June Jamboree: Drop-In Social at Little Rock Creek
DESCRIPTION:Drop-In Social at Little Rock Creek Preserve\nDate: 6/14/2024\nTime: 1-4 pm\nWhere: Little Rock Creek Preserve\nCost: FREE\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nFollowing the morning hikes and experiences\, participants are invited to stay for an afternoon drop-in social from 1 to 4 pm at SAHC’s Little Rock Creek Preserve. SAHC purchased the heart of the Little Rock Creek Preserve in 2020\, and an additional 57-acre adjoining property was donated as a preserve addition in 2023. The preserve is particularly unique in the Roan Highlands because in addition to healthy forest habitats\, it contains many seeps and wetland and floodplain habitats that are relatively rare in the mountains. A beautiful apple orchard\, once part of farm production in the 1940s\, now provides open habitat and a food source for a variety of wildlife and bird species.    \nDuring the June Jamboree Social\, SAHC staff will recognize the 2024 Stanley A. Murray Volunteer of the Year and share updates about our recent conservation work – including recently-protected Round Mountain and Richmond Hill tracts. \nWe invite everyone to join us in celebrating friends\, family\, and shared hike experiences. Drinks and light refreshments will be provided\, so please RSVP so we have enough for everyone! \n

SUMMARY:2025 June Jamboree: Plant Inventory Walk at Little Rock Creek
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, June 14th\nTime: Starting at 10 am\nWhere: Little Rock Creek Preserve\nDistance: 2 miles\nDifficulty: (2/10)\, Easy\nLeaders: Gary Kauffman\, Retired Botanist/Ecologist at USDA-USFS\, Sarah Sheeran\, SAHC Stewardship Director\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nPlease complete your registration by June 11\, 2025\, at 9:00 PM.\nJoin us for the 2025 June Jamboree: Plant Inventory Walk at Little Rock Creek! \nExplore the botanical wonders of SAHC’s Little Rock Creek Preserve with retired USFS botanist and ecologist Gary Kauffman and SAHC Stewardship Director Sarah Sheeran. This relatively easy 2-mile walk will meander through the preserve as the hike leaders identify and point out different species of flora. This plant inventory can tell us if there are any rare species and if they are being threatened by invasives\, recreational impacts\, or climate change.  Knowing that about the populations in an area is important for protecting species and maintaining a healthy\, biodiverse ecosystem. Plan on a leisurely\, educational stroll!  \nThis walk is perfect for anyone curious about native plants\, local ecology\, or simply looking to enjoy a peaceful moment outdoors surrounded by natural beauty.  Afterwards\, we hope participants will stick around for the SAHC post-hike drop-in social at our Little Rock Creek Preserve. \nThank you for your interest in this Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy event—we look forward to sharing the natural beauty of this special place and the meaningful conservation work happening here! \nIf you have any questions please email Alex Russell at alex@appalachian.org. \n

SUMMARY:2025 June Jamboree: Geology Hike at Hawk Spur
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, June 14th\nTime: Starting at 9 am\nWhere: Bakersville\, NC\nDistance: 1.5 miles \nDifficulty: (5/10)\, 600 feet elevation gain in 0.6 miles\nLeaders: Park Greer\, South Yellow Mountain Preserve Manager\, Michelle Pugliese\, SAHC Land Protection Director\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nPlease complete your registration by June 11\, 2025\, at 9:00 PM.\nJoin us for the 2025 June Jamboree: Geology hike at Hawk Spur!\nJoin Park Greer\, SAHC’s South Yellow Mountain Preserve manager\, for a moderate hike exploring the geology of the Southern Appalachian mountains on SAHC’s Hawk Spur Preserve. This hike follows a soil road for 0.6 miles up to an overlook with an expansive view of some of the highest peaks in our region.  \nAll of the flora\, fauna\, waterfalls\, and views in the area are tied to and sometimes depend upon the underlying geology; this hike will offer a basic answer to the question: “Why is that there?” Along the way we will see many results of the forces that folded\, compressed\, and uplifted the basement rocks of the Appalachians to form the metamorphic rocks we see today. At a few sites the intrusive igneous rocks provide a stark contrast to the metamorphics\, not only in age but also in appearance and structure.  \nThis hike will be at a slower pace as we stop at several spots to investigate crystals and stone older than the evolution of trees. Please come prepared with sturdy footwear\, water\, snacks\, and questions about geology! \nWe hope participants will join us after this outing for the SAHC post-hike social at our Little Rock Creek Preserve. The distance from Hawk Spur to the Little Rock Creek Preserve is 12 miles (20 minute estimated drive time). \nThanks so much for your interest in this Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy outing—we’re excited to share the beauty and impact of conservation with you! \nIf you have any questions please email Alex Russell at alex@appalachian.org. \n

SUMMARY:2025 Spring Ephemerals - Lunch & Learn
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lunch & Learn: Spring Ephemeral Wildflowers\nDwarf larkspur (Delphinium tricorne) \nJoin Equinox Environmental’s Owen Carson for a Lunch & Learn about spring ephemeral wildflowers in Southern Appalachia. \nAppalachian Spring truly is a sight to behold! As winter relents\, life bursts forth from the thawed ground\, producing a dazzling display of colors\, shapes\, textures\, and tastes. This world-famous biodiversity (over 6\,000 plant species!) is the focus of many a spring pilgrimage to these mountains. \nIn keeping with tradition\, Owen Carson\, Botanist & Ecologist at Equinox Environmental\, will take us on a virtual plant pilgrimage with a focus on ephemeral and other spring wildflowers commonly seen in Appalachian forests. We will explore their unique biology and ecology\, learn about their preferred habitats\, and see how they are distributed across the landscape. The goal is for you to leave this session feeling more confident on how to recognize and identify native woodland wildflowers. \nClick HERE to Register for Webinar \n  \nOwen Carson | Equinox Environmental\nBotanist and Ecologist \nBorn and raised in midtown Atlanta\, GA\, Owen was immersed early on in a world that was dichotomously urban and wild\, instilling a deep love for both environments. His interest in the natural world drove him to attend Brevard College\, where he earned his undergraduate in environmental science\, ecology\, and geology\, and where he fell in love with his wife\, Sarah. In 2010\, he started his career at Equinox as a field technician\, eventually earning the title of Botanist/Senior Ecologist. In his 15 years with Equinox\, Owen has explored the diverse landscapes of Southern Appalachia\, documenting flora and fauna\, protecting land and water\, and helping communities balance development and conservation. Outside of work\, he serves as the Chair of the Transylvania Natural Resources Council\, and as a member of the City of Brevard’s Public Works & Utilities Committee; in both positions Owen uses his knowledge and experience to help inform our community and plan for its sustainable future. At home he finds joy helping to raise 10-year old twins Liam and Hazel\, gardening with native plants\, coaching soccer\, fishing tenkara\, and cooking.\n

SUMMARY:2025 Hike Series: Kephart Prong Trail [Rescheduled Date]
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, April 5th\nTime: Starting at 10:00 am\nWhere: Great Smoky Mountains National Park\nDistance:  4.5 miles\nDifficulty: Difficult (7/10)\, several steep inclines are present on the trail\nCost: Free\, though pre-registration is required\nJoin Us for a Guided Hike at Great Smoky Mountain NP – Saturday\, April 5th \nOur previously-planned hike along The Kephart Prong Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has been rescheduled to Saturday\, April 5 due to inclement weather.  This trail offers a scenic and historically rich hike\, leading to the Kephart Shelter.  We’ll begin with a footbridge crossing the Oconaluftee River and then navigate past the remnants of a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp from the Great Depression era.  Here\, you’ll find the chimney of the camp barracks\, rock framing for a signboard\, and remnants of a water fountain.  The CCC camp\, which operated between 1933 and 1942\, played a significant role in the construction of park roads\, footbridges\, and other structures\, some of which are still visible today. \nContinuing along the trail\, hikers will cross several more footbridges and climb steadily up the southern slopes of Mount Kephart.  At 2.1 miles\, you’ll reach the Kephart Shelter\, located at the junction of multiple trails\, where you can enjoy beautiful views and historical insights.  This area is named for Horace Kephart\, a key advocate for the Smoky Mountains National Park\, whose contributions to the park’s preservation and mountain culture are celebrated here.  Whether you’re exploring the rich history or simply soaking in the natural beauty\, the Kephart Prong Trail is a rewarding hike for outdoor enthusiasts \nWhile the Kephart Prong Trail is open to the public\, pre-registration is required for this guided hike.  Upon registration\, you’ll receive a confirmation email along with detailed information about the meeting location and event specifics 24-48 hours prior to the hike.  Please note that this hike is not wheelchair accessible\, so participants should be prepared for a moderate trail experience. \nFor more information and resources on Kephart Prong Trail\, visit: NPS Kephart Prong Resource \nRegistration for this event will close at end of day on Thursday\, April 3rd. If you have any questions\, please reach out to justin@appalachian.org. \n

SUMMARY:2024 Lunch and Learn: Elk Habitat Management
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lunch & Learn: Elk Habitat Management with Wildlife Biologist Justin McVey\nWednesday\, November 20 at 12:00 pm EST\nJoin NC Wildlife Resources Commission‘s Wildlife Biologist Justin McVey and SAHC’s Stewardship Director Sarah Sheeran for a virtual Lunch & Learn about Elk\, their habitat\, and ongoing research and management at SAHC’s Stevens Creek Preserve adjoining Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In 2001\, 52 Rocky Mountain Elk were released into Cataloochee Valley as part of an experimental program to reintroduce elk to the park. Native elk had been eliminated from the region by over-hunting and loss of habitat. A 2022 DNA study estimated there are now approximately 240 elk in Western North Carolina. \nClick HERE to Register \nIn 2023\, SAHC’s partners at NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) received grant funding to improve elk habitat on SAHC-owned land on the edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. SAHC’s 147-acre Stevens Creek Preserve\, located at the northern end of Cataloochee Ridge in Haywood County\, was purchased in 2017 to protect habitat for elk\, turkey\, deer and other wildlife\, to protect water resources\, and to provide a buffer on the edge of the national park. \n“We had noticed a few elk using the Stevens Creek tract\, mostly bachelors\,” said Justin McVey\, District Biologist with NCWRC. “However\, more elk which have been living just over the ridge since the release have not used the tract. We were curious – ‘why not?’ We wondered if the open areas on SAHC’s tract were converted to native grasses and plants\, would more female and young elk come onto that property? It’s so beautiful\, just a gorgeous little valley\, and we’d love to see more elk using that space. The elk population is slowly growing\, and we have high hopes that if we continue to create quality habitat we will increase the number of elk.” \nWith that in mind\, NCWRC applied for a grant from Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to support removing non-native plants in favor of native vegetation on SAHC’s property at Stevens Creek. In conjunction with the grant for habitat management\, they secured funds to put radio collars on elk to track their movements and see if more elk use SAHC’s property. Read more about the project at – appalachian.org/elk-habitat-management-at-stevens-creek. \nClick here to read more about the 147-acre Stevens Creek Preserve protected in 2017\, and here to read more about the nearby 13-acres protected in 2021. \nBiologist Justin McVey conducting Elk research.

SUMMARY:2024 Clawhammer Hike with Highland Brewing
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, September 20th\nTime: 8:00 am\nWhere: Pisgah National Forest near Brevard\, NC\nDistance:  10+ miles\nDifficulty: Very strenuous (10+ mile hike with significant elevation change)\nCost: FREE for all participants (pre-registration is required)\nKick-off Clawtoberfest with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy by joining us to celebrate our “For Love of Beer and Mountains” partnerships!  We’re hitting the trails for an annual 10+ mile trek to the summit of Clawhammer Mountain\, namesake of Highland Brewing Company’s seasonal Clawhammer Oktoberfest Lager\, where stunning views and crisp mountain air await.  One of the longer\, more challenging hikes that we offer throughout the year\, we will follow along multi-use trails that traverse mountain bike\, equestrian\, and hiking trails as well as forest service roads.  Prepare to hike a steep climb along a creek\, through wildflower patches and rich cove forest.  From Clawhammer Cove to the summit\, we will climb close to 1\,900 feet to finish at 4\,072ft elevation. The cliff-top view at the summit offers scenic views of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Looking Glass in Pisgah National Forest. \nThis hike is part of our corporate partnership with Highland Brewing Company in Asheville\, NC.  Highland donates a portion of sales of seasonal releases during the “release party” at the Tasting Room in Asheville to support SAHC’s land and water conservation efforts\, and we lead guided hikes for folks to experience and enjoy the natural landscapes for which these seasonal brews are named. \nPlease Note: There are a couple of single log bridges\, muddy areas\, rocky and steep inclines and a chance of yellow jackets; SAHC wants to provide a fun and safe trip so please be aware of these conditions. \nWhat To Bring: Hiking boots\, hiking poles (optional)\, packed lunch\, 2 liters of water\, jacket/rain gear.  Please be sure to check the weather forecast and bring appropriate layers. \nDogs: Well-behaved dogs are welcome\, but must be kept on a leash. \nLeader: Justin Tucker\, Outreach Program Manager.  For questions or more info\, contact Justin at justin@appalachian.org \n

SUMMARY:2024 Lunch and Learn: MountainTrue
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lunch & Learn: MountainTrue’s Neighbors for More Neighbors WNC\nThursday\, September 12 at 12:00 pm EST\nWhy should environmentalists support building more housing? Join MountainTrue’s Housing & Transportation Director Susan Bean as she explores the answers to this question. \nWe know that healthy communities exist within the context of a healthy environment — and right now\, both are threatened. There is a housing shortage across the country creating an urgent need to build more homes. There is also a climate crisis\, with greenhouse gas emissions threatening the stability of all our planet’s ecosystems and biodiversity. How and where our communities build these much needed homes for families will have implications for our carbon footprint. Join us to learn more about MountainTrue’s newest program\, Neighbors for More Neighbors WNC\, and about part of the solution to both these crises. \nClick HERE to Register \n
