SUMMARY:2025 November Chestnut Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, November 21\nTime: Starting at 11:00 AM\nWhere: Chestnut Mountain Nature Park\nDistance: 6 miles \nDifficulty: Moderately Strenuous (6/10)\, several long\, steep inclines are present on this trail\nCost: FREE for members\, $10 for non-members\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED below\n  \nJoin SAHC for a guided group hike at Chestnut Mountain Nature Park in Canton\, NC on Friday\, November 21st at 11 am. We will hike 6 miles on the Old Timer Loop via the Papertown Express Trail. This hike is rated moderately strenuous\, containing many extended steep sections with some rocky terrain and about 800 feet of elevation gain. Be aware that bikers can also use the Papertown Trail\, so we may encounter riders. \nSAHC purchased the 448-acre Chestnut Mountain tract in 2020 and then transferred the property to the Town of Canton in 2022. Chestnut Mountain Nature Park opened to the public in April 2022 and hosts over 15 miles of trails. \nThis property is a critical piece of a larger wildlife corridor connecting the Pisgah National Forest to Sandy Mush and Cherokee Forest of East Tennessee. Conservation of the land permanently protected nine miles of streams\, including a section of Hominy Creek. \nConservation of the Chestnut Mountain property was made possible through funding from the North Carolina Land and Water Fund\, the NC Attorney General’s Office’s Environmental Enhancement Grant Program\, The Pigeon River Fund of The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina\, the Conservation Trust for North Carolina\, many private donors\, and a bridge loan from the The Conservation Fund. \n  \nAfter registering\, you’ll receive directions\, meeting instructions\, and other important details a couple days prior to the event date. \nIf you have any questions please email SAHC Outreach Program Manager Erin Goodpaster at erin@appalachian.org \nREGISTER HERE\n \nLearn more about Chestnut Mountain Nature Park

SUMMARY:2025 Clawtoberfest Hike - Strawberry Gap Trail
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, September 20th\nTime: 10:00 am\nWhere: Strawberry Gap to Blue Ridge Pastures\nDistance: 6 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants (Pre-Registration is Required!)\n  \nKick-off Clawtoberfest with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy by joining us for a guided hike for Highland Brewing Company’s “Thirst for Good” partnership!  We’re hitting the trails to celebrate Highland Brewing Company’s seasonal Clawhammer Oktoberfest Lager by hiking to Blue Ridge Pastures via the Strawberry Gap Trail. Participants will hike a moderately strenuous 6 mile out-and-back through a beautiful forest while taking in sweeping views of Fairview\, NC before arriving at the remote Blue Ridge Pastures. \nStrawberry Gap is in the stunning Upper Hickory Nut Gorge trail network and climbs upward for three miles through beautiful\, boulder-strewn forests. About halfway up\, a rock outcrop offers sweeping views over a picturesque valley and range upon range of distant\, blue mountains. The climax of this trail is Blue Ridge Pastures\, where the forests give way to a ridgeline pasture\, revealing dramatic views of the Hickory Nut Gorge\, Bearwallow Mountain\, Little Pisgah Mountain\, and in the distance the highest mountains in the eastern United States.  \nThis trail is made possible through a partnership between two local land trusts–Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) and Conserving Carolina. SAHC owns Strawberry Gap Preserve and worked with multiple private landowners to protect this beautiful mountain land with conservation easements. Conserving Carolina then built the trail\, which connects to Trombatore Trail at Blue Ridge Pastures. This brings us to more than 16 miles of connected trails in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge. \nThis hike is part of our corporate partnership with Highland Brewing Company in Asheville\, NC.  Highland donates a portion of sales of seasonal releases during the “release party” at the Tasting Room in Asheville to support SAHC’s land and water conservation efforts\, and we lead guided hikes for folks to experience and enjoy the natural landscapes for which these seasonal brews are named and beyond. \nAfter the hike we will have plenty of time to head back by Highland Brewing to enjoy all the festivities and share a Clawhammer together! \n*Please note that Strawberry Gap passes through privately owned land and dogs are not allowed on this trail.  \nCost – FREE for all participants\, (Pre-Registration is Required Below!) \n

SUMMARY:2025 Free the Fir Volunteer Work Day in the Roan Highlands
DESCRIPTION:When: September 11\, 2025 (9:30 am-3:30 pm)\, Rain Date September 16\, 2025 \nWhat: Tropical Storm Helene caused extensive damage to the red spruce-Fraser fir forest in and around Toll House Gap and Roan High Knob. Our partners at the U.S. Forest Service cleared this area of storm damaged trees under a compressed timeline\, using tree material as matting to prevent erosion. We would like to “jump start” natural forest regeneration in this area by releasing small spruce and fir saplings and wildflowers that may be covered or bent over under matting or downed tree branches. \nHow: We will canvas the entire cleared area (roughly 25 acres)\, identifying and uncovering any healthy saplings that we can find and easily release. We will not use any mechanized tools or move large pieces of debris. \nHeads Up: While this work is fairly gentle\, it does require the ability to scramble over a very rugged area with uneven footing\, potential holes\, and rocks. Please do not sign up for this event if you have knee\, back or balance issues. This event is not suitable for small children or dogs. \nWhere: Meet at the Roan High Knob (aka Cloudland) Parking Area at 9:30 am (Directions – https://maps.app.goo.gl/sYNgMT9rLegTH4Ci7) \nWhat to Wear: Dress for the weather and work outside. Please wear long pants and sturdy work boots and bring rain gear. \nWhat to Bring: Bring your lunch\, water\, and gear in addition to leather work gloves\, eye protection\, and any small hand tools (loppers\, garden claws\, small hoes) that may help uncover seedlings. Bathrooms and handwashing are available at the Cloudland Parking Area\, but there is no potable water. \nSchedule:\n9:30 – 10:00 – Sign in\, safety talk\, split into crews and begin work\n12:30 – 1:00 – Lunch with your crew\n1:30 – 3:00 – Continue work (return to parking area when finished)\n3:30 – Meet back at parking area for wrap up\, thanks\, and goodbyes \n  \nFor questions or more information\, contact Roan Stewardship Director Marquette Crockett at marquette@appalachian.org. \nThank you for your interest in volunteering with SAHC. The registration for this work day is now closed.

SUMMARY:2025 NCWF/SAHC Volunteer Work Day at Bowditch Bottoms
DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, August 21 from 9 am to 12 pm\nWhere: SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve in Yancey County\, NC\nJoin the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for volunteer work day and invasive plant species removal at SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve in Yancey County. \nOriginally protected as a conservation easement in 2020\, the landowners donated the land to SAHC in 2023. (With SAHC’s ownership of the land\, the conservation easement was assigned to our partners at Blue Ridge Conservancy.) Bowditch Bottoms contains mixed hardwood forest\, cleared agricultural fields\, valuable wetland habitat within the South Toe River Watershed\, and a riparian area that buffers over a half mile of Ayles Creek. \nWe will focus our workday along the creek targeting Japanese knotweed. The significant length of natural stream and several wetland areas makes this property stand out as an opportunity for restoration projects (clean ups\, invasive species removal\, revegetation with native plants) that will directly benefit wildlife and multiple habitat types. This is part of a long-term process to restore the land – which will also include planting native species in the stream corridor. We will be working on a management plan for the property over the next year. \nThis is one of a series of collaborative volunteer work days on SAHC-conserved land organized by our partners at NC Wildlife Federation.\nClick HERE to Sign Up to Volunteer

SUMMARY:2025 June Jamboree: Drop-In Social at Little Rock Creek
DESCRIPTION:Drop-In Social at Little Rock Creek Preserve\nDate: 6/14/2024\nTime: 1-4 pm\nWhere: Little Rock Creek Preserve\nCost: FREE\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nFollowing the morning hikes and experiences\, participants are invited to stay for an afternoon drop-in social from 1 to 4 pm at SAHC’s Little Rock Creek Preserve. SAHC purchased the heart of the Little Rock Creek Preserve in 2020\, and an additional 57-acre adjoining property was donated as a preserve addition in 2023. The preserve is particularly unique in the Roan Highlands because in addition to healthy forest habitats\, it contains many seeps and wetland and floodplain habitats that are relatively rare in the mountains. A beautiful apple orchard\, once part of farm production in the 1940s\, now provides open habitat and a food source for a variety of wildlife and bird species.    \nDuring the June Jamboree Social\, SAHC staff will recognize the 2024 Stanley A. Murray Volunteer of the Year and share updates about our recent conservation work – including recently-protected Round Mountain and Richmond Hill tracts. \nWe invite everyone to join us in celebrating friends\, family\, and shared hike experiences. Drinks and light refreshments will be provided\, so please RSVP so we have enough for everyone! \n

SUMMARY:2025 June Jamboree: Plant Inventory Walk at Little Rock Creek
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, June 14th\nTime: Starting at 10 am\nWhere: Little Rock Creek Preserve\nDistance: 2 miles\nDifficulty: (2/10)\, Easy\nLeaders: Gary Kauffman\, Retired Botanist/Ecologist at USDA-USFS\, Sarah Sheeran\, SAHC Stewardship Director\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nPlease complete your registration by June 11\, 2025\, at 9:00 PM.\nJoin us for the 2025 June Jamboree: Plant Inventory Walk at Little Rock Creek! \nExplore the botanical wonders of SAHC’s Little Rock Creek Preserve with retired USFS botanist and ecologist Gary Kauffman and SAHC Stewardship Director Sarah Sheeran. This relatively easy 2-mile walk will meander through the preserve as the hike leaders identify and point out different species of flora. This plant inventory can tell us if there are any rare species and if they are being threatened by invasives\, recreational impacts\, or climate change.  Knowing that about the populations in an area is important for protecting species and maintaining a healthy\, biodiverse ecosystem. Plan on a leisurely\, educational stroll!  \nThis walk is perfect for anyone curious about native plants\, local ecology\, or simply looking to enjoy a peaceful moment outdoors surrounded by natural beauty.  Afterwards\, we hope participants will stick around for the SAHC post-hike drop-in social at our Little Rock Creek Preserve. \nThank you for your interest in this Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy event—we look forward to sharing the natural beauty of this special place and the meaningful conservation work happening here! \nIf you have any questions please email Alex Russell at alex@appalachian.org. \n

SUMMARY:2025 June Jamboree: Geology Hike at Hawk Spur
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, June 14th\nTime: Starting at 9 am\nWhere: Bakersville\, NC\nDistance: 1.5 miles \nDifficulty: (5/10)\, 600 feet elevation gain in 0.6 miles\nLeaders: Park Greer\, South Yellow Mountain Preserve Manager\, Michelle Pugliese\, SAHC Land Protection Director\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nPlease complete your registration by June 11\, 2025\, at 9:00 PM.\nJoin us for the 2025 June Jamboree: Geology hike at Hawk Spur!\nJoin Park Greer\, SAHC’s South Yellow Mountain Preserve manager\, for a moderate hike exploring the geology of the Southern Appalachian mountains on SAHC’s Hawk Spur Preserve. This hike follows a soil road for 0.6 miles up to an overlook with an expansive view of some of the highest peaks in our region.  \nAll of the flora\, fauna\, waterfalls\, and views in the area are tied to and sometimes depend upon the underlying geology; this hike will offer a basic answer to the question: “Why is that there?” Along the way we will see many results of the forces that folded\, compressed\, and uplifted the basement rocks of the Appalachians to form the metamorphic rocks we see today. At a few sites the intrusive igneous rocks provide a stark contrast to the metamorphics\, not only in age but also in appearance and structure.  \nThis hike will be at a slower pace as we stop at several spots to investigate crystals and stone older than the evolution of trees. Please come prepared with sturdy footwear\, water\, snacks\, and questions about geology! \nWe hope participants will join us after this outing for the SAHC post-hike social at our Little Rock Creek Preserve. The distance from Hawk Spur to the Little Rock Creek Preserve is 12 miles (20 minute estimated drive time). \nThanks so much for your interest in this Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy outing—we’re excited to share the beauty and impact of conservation with you! \nIf you have any questions please email Alex Russell at alex@appalachian.org. \n

SUMMARY:2025 Spring Ephemerals - Lunch & Learn
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lunch & Learn: Spring Ephemeral Wildflowers\nDwarf larkspur (Delphinium tricorne) \nJoin Equinox Environmental’s Owen Carson for a Lunch & Learn about spring ephemeral wildflowers in Southern Appalachia. \nAppalachian Spring truly is a sight to behold! As winter relents\, life bursts forth from the thawed ground\, producing a dazzling display of colors\, shapes\, textures\, and tastes. This world-famous biodiversity (over 6\,000 plant species!) is the focus of many a spring pilgrimage to these mountains. \nIn keeping with tradition\, Owen Carson\, Botanist & Ecologist at Equinox Environmental\, will take us on a virtual plant pilgrimage with a focus on ephemeral and other spring wildflowers commonly seen in Appalachian forests. We will explore their unique biology and ecology\, learn about their preferred habitats\, and see how they are distributed across the landscape. The goal is for you to leave this session feeling more confident on how to recognize and identify native woodland wildflowers. \nClick HERE to Register for Webinar \n  \nOwen Carson | Equinox Environmental\nBotanist and Ecologist \nBorn and raised in midtown Atlanta\, GA\, Owen was immersed early on in a world that was dichotomously urban and wild\, instilling a deep love for both environments. His interest in the natural world drove him to attend Brevard College\, where he earned his undergraduate in environmental science\, ecology\, and geology\, and where he fell in love with his wife\, Sarah. In 2010\, he started his career at Equinox as a field technician\, eventually earning the title of Botanist/Senior Ecologist. In his 15 years with Equinox\, Owen has explored the diverse landscapes of Southern Appalachia\, documenting flora and fauna\, protecting land and water\, and helping communities balance development and conservation. Outside of work\, he serves as the Chair of the Transylvania Natural Resources Council\, and as a member of the City of Brevard’s Public Works & Utilities Committee; in both positions Owen uses his knowledge and experience to help inform our community and plan for its sustainable future. At home he finds joy helping to raise 10-year old twins Liam and Hazel\, gardening with native plants\, coaching soccer\, fishing tenkara\, and cooking.\n

SUMMARY:2025 Appalachia Day Hike to Blue Ridge Pastures
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, April 26th\nTime: 8:30am\nWhere: Strawberry Gap to Blue Ridge Pastures\nDistance: 6 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: Free for Members. $10 for non-members.\nCome kick off Appalachia Day with Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy by joining us on the morning of April 26th for a hike to Blue Ridge Pastures via the Strawberry Gap Trail. Participants will hike a moderately strenuous 6 mile out-and-back through a beautiful forest while taking in sweeping views of Fairview\, NC before arriving at the remote Blue Ridge Pastures. Despite a mostly uphill 3-mile climb\, hikers will be rewarded with dramatic views of the Hickory Nut Gorge\, Bearwallow Mountain\, Little Pisgah Mountain\, and in the distance the highest mountains in the eastern United States.  \nThis trail is made possible through a partnership between two local land trusts – Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) and Conserving Carolina. SAHC owns Strawberry Gap Preserve and worked with multiple private landowners to protect this beautiful mountain land with conservation easements. Conserving Carolina then built the trail\, which connects to Trombatore Trail at Blue Ridge Pastures. This brings us to more than 16 miles of connected trails in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge!  \n*Please note that Strawberry Gap passes through privately owned land and dogs are not allowed on this trail.  \nCost – $10 or Free to Members. Registration for this event will close at end of day on Thursday\, April 23rd. \n
