SUMMARY:2023 Autumn Birding with Blue Ridge Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, September 15th\nTime: 8:30am\nWhere: Ridge Junction Overlook\, Blue Ridge Parkway\nDistance:  NO hiking involved\, walking is limited\nDifficulty: Easy (1/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants\nJoin the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy  and the Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter for a morning of birding along the Blue Ridge Parkway. During September many of our beloved birds of summer will be migrating through this exact location on Mount Mitchell\, the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River. After days of flying south\, migratory birds can easily be found at this location on the Blue Ridge Parkway temporarily resting their wings along their journey to Central and South America. We will gather first thing in the morning to witness these beautiful animals before they disappear from the Southern Appalachian mountains for the winter. \nThis special experience is being made possible by our partner and friends at the Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter (BRAC)\, who have long supported SAHC’s land protection efforts to conserve critical bird habitat throughout the Southern Appalachians. The BRAC have kindly offered their time and expertise to lead this outing to help participants properly see and identify birds. A limited number of binoculars will be provided to attendees. Early bird gets the worm! \nWhat To Bring: close-toed shoes\, a snack\, water\, jacket/rain gear\, camera\, and binoculars. Extras binoculars will be available if you don’t have any. Please dress in layers\, the weather can be much cooler at this elevation during September. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to katie@appalachian.org. \nCost – Free for everyone. Pre-registration is required. \nOops! We could not locate your form.

SUMMARY:2023 Year of the Trail - Snowball Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, September 8th\nTime: 10:30am\nWhere: Snowball Mountain off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Craggy Gardens Picnic Area\nDistance: 3 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: Free for Members. $10 for non-members.\nJoin Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a hike to the protected Snowball Mountain. This hike will celebrate the 2023 Year of the Trail to help interested residents\, visitors and trails enthusiasts in the area (and across the state) find and attend events\, connect with others\, and learn more about advocating for trails in NC. \nThis moderate 3-mile hike will take hikers along a high elevation ridgeline with remarkable views. We will start out on the Mountains-to-Sea trail and split off to climb Snowball Mountain. Next\, we will continue North to Hawkbill Rock where we will look back onto the property and into the Woodfin Watershed— another SAHC-protected landmark. Hikers should be prepared for a short trip\, but steep elevation changes along the way. Snowball Mountain was one of the marquee parcels that pushed SAHC past the 50\,000-acre milestone mark at the end of 2011. \nCome and enjoy this beautiful property and learn about SAHC’s projects in this spectacular area of the Black Mountain range. In 2012\, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased 90 acres on Snowball Mountain in Buncombe County\, permanently preserving scenic views for recreational visitors\, clean water sources for area residents\, and habitat for native species. Nestled in the beautiful Craggy Mountains\, this tract is highly visible from the Blue Ridge Parkway and national forest land\, and it adjoins the publicly accessible Snowball Mountain Trail and Camp Sequoyah Trail. \nSAHC’s Snowball Mountain tract joins a significant swath of state and federal protected land\, contributing another piece to a vast network of over 125\,000 acres of contiguous protected forestlands.  The trail overlooks national forest land and the Woodfin Watershed\, which SAHC protects with a conservation easement. \nWhat To Bring: hiking shoes\, lunch\, water\, jacket/rain gear\, camera\, and please dress in layers. \nDogs: Dogs are allowed. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to katie@appalachian.org. \nCost – $10 or Free to Members. Pre-registration is required. \nRegistration FULL\nThank you for your interest in this hike; however\, this hike is currently full. If you would like to be added to a wait list for this hike\, please email hike leader AmeriCorps Community Engagement and Education member Katie Greer at katie@appalachian.org.

SUMMARY:2023 Strawberry Gap to Blue Ridge Pastures
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, August 25th\nTime: 10:30am\nWhere: Strawberry Gap to Blue Ridge Pastures\nDistance: 6 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: Free for Members. $10 for non-members.\nJoin Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy on August 25th for a hike to Blue Ridge Pastures via the new Strawberry Gap Trail. Participants will hike a moderately strenuous 6 mile out-and-back through a beautiful forest while taking in sweeping views of Fairview\, NC before arriving at the remote Blue Ridge Pastures. \nStrawberry Gap is the newest trail in the stunning Upper Hickory Nut Gorge trail network–just opened in September 2022! The trail climbs upward for three miles through beautiful\, boulder-strewn forests. About halfway up\, a rock outcrop offers sweeping views over a picturesque valley and range upon range of distant\, blue mountains. The climax of this trail is Blue Ridge Pastures\, where the forests give way to a ridgeline pasture\, revealing dramatic views of the Hickory Nut Gorge\, Bearwallow Mountain\, Little Pisgah Mountain\, and in the distance the highest mountains in the eastern United States.  \nThis trail is made possible through a partnership between two local land trusts–Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) and Conserving Carolina. SAHC owns Strawberry Gap Preserve and worked with multiple private landowners to protect this beautiful mountain land with conservation easements. Conserving Carolina then built the trail\, which connects to Trombatore Trail at Blue Ridge Pastures. This brings us to more than 16 miles of connected trails in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge!  \n*Please note that Strawberry Gap passes through privately owned land and dogs are not allowed on this trail.  \nCost – $10 or Free to Members. Pre-registration is required. \nRegistration FULL\nThank you for your interest in this hike; however\, this hike is currently full. Several steep inclines are present on the trail.\nCost: Free for Members. $10 for non-members.\n  \nJoin the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy on our beautiful Community Farm to hike along our Discovery Trail! Conservation land trusts like Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy play a critical role in helping to conserve land for public enjoyment as well as privately-owned preserves that protect view-sheds and wildlife corridors near national trails. Land trusts work to protect and manage a wide variety of important land and water resources\, including habitat for rare plants and animals\, farmland\, and sources of drinking water for millions of people. \nOur Community Farm is a 140-acre educational and working farm just outside Asheville. The farm is a continually evolving home for conservation projects and agricultural production. Highlighted by our stream restoration project\, shortleaf pine reforestation project\, farm incubator program\, silvopasture project\, and education center\, there is always something new to see. \nParticipants will hike The Discovery Trail in a 2.5-mile loop allowing us to view all of the amazing farm projects before returning to the parking area. Participants are welcome to bring snacks and water to enjoy as we venture across the farm property.  \nPlease note that our Community Farm is an active farm not open to the public unless accompanied by SAHC staff. To ensure safety\, staff capacity\, and a positive experience for everyone involved it is critical that ALL hike participants pre-register for events before visiting the farm. SUMMARY:Farm workshop: Agroforestry Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:So\, you planned and planted an agroforestry project. Now what? \nEarlier this year\, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy planted thousands of trees and shrubs in a new demonstration silvopasture project on 8 acres of pasture at the SAHC Community Farm\, with a lot of help from volunteers and our partners at Contours Lines! Contour Lines\, a nonprofit\, specializes in efficient establishment of agroforestry systems with a high seedling survival rate.  Contour Lines has planted over 7\,000 agroforestry systems in three countries.   They are hosting a 2-part workshop series with SAHC to teach more people how to plan and plant a silvopasture agroforestry sites on contour\, combining sloped soil management with sustainable agriculture. \nThis month\, we are hosting Part 2 in our 2-part silvopasture workshop series. We invite you to come learn about agroforestry maintenance. This class will focus on the termination and management of cover crops\, pruning\, organic pest management\, and mulching practices. \nThis workshop is great for anyone who is interested in learning more about silvopasture and agroforestry systems in the southern Appalachian mountains. \nCost: $20/per person (No one turned away for inability to pay)\n\nAbout the project: SAHC received a $6\,000 Catalyzing Agroforestry Grant to support this project\, and nonprofit organization Contour Lines  Corp. (contourlines.org) is donating plant material\, design and expertise for hands-on workshops to help execute the silvopasture project on the SAHC Community Farm. The Catalyzing Agroforestry Grants Program is an initiative funded by the Appalachian Beginning Forest Farming Coalition (ABFFC) and Edwards Mother Earth Foundation (EMEF) that is managed by Virginia Tech University in partnership with Rural Action\, Appalachian Sustainable Development\, The Yew Mountain Center\, North Carolina State University. \n\n\nRegister for This Workshop\nOops! We could not locate your form. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSilvopasture at the Community Farm\nGoal:\nOur aim with this acreage is to make productive and educational/demonstrative use of the hilly pasture on the SAHC Community Farm\, which sees a lot of visitors (both adults and school groups from the community). We currently have no other agroforestry or silvopasture production open to the public in our community\, and we feel this will be a valuable learning site for current and future growers in the area! Carbon sequestration\, value added products and perennial/no till crops are just a few of the beneficial environmental and economic factors which lead us to initiate this specific multi crop plan. We are confident it will be a great fit for our farm and the needs of our region. \nDuring our first phase we converted 8 acres of pasture land into silvopasture by cutting in swales slightly of contour.  We planted a multi-species perennial crop of trees and shrubs for multiple outputs.  Varieties planted included locust\, mulberry\, paw-paw\, hazelnut\, sycamore\, indigo\, cottonwood\, elderberry and others.  In our second phase\, we will continue maintenance and management of the silvopasture project area\, which will produce food\, fodder\, fuel\, shade\, habitat\, water conservation and other impacts. \nPartnership with Contour Lines:\nSouthern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) and  Contour Lines Corp are teaming up to plant this demonstration agroforestry plot. The site is designed as an educational tool that will demonstrate regenerative agriculture and soil conservation techniques. This site will serve as a model for larger scale land restoration projects including native species reforestation\, diversified fruit and nut production\, and silvopasture farming. \n\n\n\n

Several steep inclines are present on the trail.\nCost: Free for Members. $10 for non-members.\n  \nJoin the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy on our beautiful Community Farm to hike along our Discovery Trail! We will be celebrating Land Trust Day and National Trails Day a day early. \nIn light of National Land Trust Day\, we are grateful to local businesses and citizens who recognize the importance of this work and have stepped up with their support for SAHC. \nOur Community Farm is a 140-acre educational and working farm just outside Asheville. The farm is a continually evolving home for conservation projects and agricultural production. Highlighted by our stream restoration project\, shortleaf pine reforestation project\, farm incubator program\, and education center\, there is always something new to see. \nParticipants will hike The Discovery Trail in a 3-mile loop allowing us to view all of the amazing farm projects before returning to the parking area. Participants are welcome to bring a packed lunch to enjoy while overlooking the farm and surrounding mountains. \nPlease note that our Community Farm is an active farm not open to the public unless accompanied by SAHC staff.
