DESCRIPTION:Drop-In Social at Little Rock Creek Preserve\nDate: 6/14/2024\nTime: 1-4 pm\nWhere: Little Rock Creek Preserve\nCost: FREE\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nFollowing the morning hikes and experiences\, participants are invited to stay for an afternoon drop-in social from 1 to 4 pm at SAHC’s Little Rock Creek Preserve. SAHC purchased the heart of the Little Rock Creek Preserve in 2020\, and an additional 57-acre adjoining property was donated as a preserve addition in 2023. The preserve is particularly unique in the Roan Highlands because in addition to healthy forest habitats\, it contains many seeps and wetland and floodplain habitats that are relatively rare in the mountains. A beautiful apple orchard\, once part of farm production in the 1940s\, now provides open habitat and a food source for a variety of wildlife and bird species.    \nDuring the June Jamboree Social\, SAHC staff will recognize the 2024 Stanley A. Murray Volunteer of the Year and share updates about our recent conservation work – including recently-protected Round Mountain and Richmond Hill tracts. \nWe invite everyone to join us in celebrating friends\, family\, and shared hike experiences. Drinks and light refreshments will be provided\, so please RSVP so we have enough for everyone! \n

SUMMARY:2025 NCWF/SAHC Volunteer Work Day at Bowditch Bottoms
DESCRIPTION:When: Friday\, June 20 from 9 am to 12 pm\nWhere: SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve in Yancey County\, NC\nJoin the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for volunteer work day and invasive plant species removal at SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve in Yancey County. \nOriginally protected as a conservation easement in 2020\, the landowners donated the land to SAHC in 2023. (With SAHC’s ownership of the land\, the conservation easement was assigned to our partners at Blue Ridge Conservancy.) Bowditch Bottoms contains mixed hardwood forest\, cleared agricultural fields\, valuable wetland habitat within the South Toe River Watershed\, and a riparian area that buffers over a half mile of Ayles Creek. \nWe will focus our invasive plant species removal effort on the wetland areas\, targeting autumn olive and multiflora rose. The significant length of natural stream and several wetland areas makes this property stand out as an opportunity for restoration projects (clean ups\, invasive species removal\, revegetation with native plants) that will directly benefit wildlife and multiple habitat types. This is part of a long-term process to restore the land – which will also include planting native species in the stream corridor. We will be working on a management plan for the property over the next year. \nThis is one of a series of collaborative volunteer work days on SAHC-conserved land organized by our partners at NC Wildlife Federation.

This easy 2-mile out-and-back walk invites you to slow down\, breathe deeply\, and fully immerse yourself in the sights\, sounds\, and rhythms of nature. \nAlong the way\, we’ll engage in gentle mindfulness practices including focused breathing\, quiet observation\, and intentional pauses to reflect or journal. Binoculars are encouraged for those who want to take a closer look at birds and wildlife. You’re also welcome to bring a journal\, sketchbook\, or any tool that helps deepen your connection with the natural world. \nThis experience is perfect for anyone seeking a calm\, grounding start to the day or a deeper appreciation for the beauty of the Southern Appalachians. \nPlease note: This hike passes through pasture and wildlife habitat. If you have any questions please email Alex Russell at alex@appalachian.org. \n \nSAHC’s involvement in conservation:\nThe Sandy Mush Game Lands consist of 2\,765 acres of land in Buncombe and Madison Counties\, owned by the State of NC and managed by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC). Sandy Mush Creek and Turkey Creek flow through it. \nIn 2004\, SAHC assisted the State of NC in the acquisition of the land\, once owned by CP&L/Progress Energy\, for conservation and public ownership. In 2011\, we acquired an 88-acre tract  because it formed a critical linking bridge and wildlife corridor between non-contiguous portions of the game lands — and in 2017 we transferred this tract to the state for inclusion in the Sandy Mush Game Lands. In 2023\, SAHC assisted our partners at NCWRC with the adding 67 acres to the Sandy Mush Game Lands on the Madison County side\, by providing a matching contribution which helped NCWRC secure grants from the NC Land and Water Fund and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Wildlife Restoration Program to make the acquisition possible.

With approximately 1\,200 feet of elevation gain\, this hike is ideal for those seeking a vigorous adventure and stunning natural views. \nWe’ll start on the Flint Creek Trail\, following the stream through lush forests and peaceful hollows. The trail then curves to meet the Blockstand Creek Trail\, where a steady climb brings more significant elevation gain. Upon reaching Snakeden Ridge\, you’ll be treated to breathtaking mountain vistas and the chance to observe wildflowers\, wildlife\, and the diverse ecosystems that thrive in this special park. \nThe route includes portions of uneven and rocky terrain\, particularly along the ridge. It combines segments of the Rocky Fork Trail\, Flint Creek Trail\, and Blockstand Creek Trail to provide a varied and immersive experience that highlights the best of Rocky Fork State Park. \n\nInteresting tidbit: The name “Snakeden Ridge” refers to snake dens allegedly found along its lower reaches. Snake dens are common at mid-level elevations in this section of the park\, according to folklore. The Cherokee word for snake is “inada”.\n\nRegistered participants will receive a pre-hike email with additional information the week of the outing. We estimate this outing to last approximately 5.5 hours. If you have any questions please email Alex Russell at alex@appalachian.org. \n \nSAHC’s involvement in conservation:\nThe 10\,000-acre Rocky Fork watershed is comprised of the 2\,076-acre Lamar Alexander Rocky Fork State Park and approximately 8\,000 adjoining acres owned by the U.S. Forest Service and part of Cherokee National Forest. \nSAHC worked from 2006-2012 to protect this iconic area\, in partnership with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy\, The Conservation Fund\, the State of Tennessee\, the U.S. Forest Service\, and other public and private partners. The Tennessee Heritage Conservation Trust Fund provided $6 million for the State of Tennessee to acquire the land for the Park\, which was officially designated Tennessee’s 55th State Park in October 2012. DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, July 24 from 1 to 3 pm\n\nWhere: SAHC Community Farm at 180 Mag Sluder Road\, Alexander\, NC 28701\nCost: $30\n\nAre you interested in producing a value-added product but have a lot of questions? \nWe will host a workshop in the Value-Added Kitchen facility at the SAHC Community Farm\, where you will learn the process from start to finish of how to go about creating a “product” from your fresh products/raw ingredients. \nYou will be connected with the certifying agency so you can sell both at market and in-store.  During the second portion of the workshop we will teach a short Food Safety and Kitchen Sanitation Class which will allow you to sign-up to access the kitchen for use. \nOur aim is to provide a kitchen that is certified and fully equipped at a cost that will “make sense” financially for farmers to take a chance at producing a product that will be more valuable\, potentially shelf stable and marketable to a larger customer base.

This 2.5-mile loop winds through sunlit fields and shady forest edges\, providing views to showcase the vibrant beauty of the farm in full bloom. \nAs you explore the 140-acre property\, you may encounter Scottish Highland cattle grazing in the pastures\, white-tailed deer moving quietly through the woods\, or hawks soaring overhead. July is a lively time on the farm\, when native pollinator plants blooms\, birds and wildlife are active\, and our conservation and agriculture projects are on full display. \nThe SAHC Community Farm hosts a range of exciting programs and projects\, including a stream restoration project\, shortleaf pine reforestation\, a farm incubator program\, silvopasture project\, food forest\, Story Walk\, and a growing education center. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast\, photographer\, or someone curious about regenerative agriculture\, this hike offers an inspiring look at how conservation and farming can work hand in hand. \nPlease note that the Community Farm is an active site not open to the public outside of scheduled events. The significant length of natural stream and several wetland areas makes this property stand out as an opportunity for restoration projects (clean ups\, invasive species removal\, revegetation with native plants) that will directly benefit wildlife and multiple habitat types. This is part of a long-term process to restore the land – which will also include planting native species in the stream corridor. SUMMARY:2025 Free the Fir Volunteer Work Day in the Roan Highlands
DESCRIPTION:When: September 11\, 2025 (9:30 am-3:30 pm)\, Rain Date September 16\, 2025 \nWhat: Tropical Storm Helene caused extensive damage to the red spruce-Fraser fir forest in and around Toll House Gap and Roan High Knob. Our partners at the U.S. Forest Service cleared this area of storm damaged trees under a compressed timeline\, using tree material as matting to prevent erosion. We would like to “jump start” natural forest regeneration in this area by releasing small spruce and fir saplings and wildflowers that may be covered or bent over under matting or downed tree branches. \nHow: We will canvas the entire cleared area (roughly 25 acres)\, identifying and uncovering any healthy saplings that we can find and easily release. We will not use any mechanized tools or move large pieces of debris. \nHeads Up: While this work is fairly gentle\, it does require the ability to scramble over a very rugged area with uneven footing\, potential holes\, and rocks. Please do not sign up for this event if you have knee\, back or balance issues. This event is not suitable for small children or dogs. \nWhere: Meet at the Roan High Knob (aka Cloudland) Parking Area at 9:30 am (Directions – https://maps.app.goo.gl/sYNgMT9rLegTH4Ci7) \nWhat to Wear: Dress for the weather and work outside. Participants will hike a moderately strenuous 6 mile out-and-back through a beautiful forest while taking in sweeping views of Fairview\, NC before arriving at the remote Blue Ridge Pastures. \nStrawberry Gap is in the stunning Upper Hickory Nut Gorge trail network and climbs upward for three miles through beautiful\, boulder-strewn forests. About halfway up\, a rock outcrop offers sweeping views over a picturesque valley and range upon range of distant\, blue mountains. The climax of this trail is Blue Ridge Pastures\, where the forests give way to a ridgeline pasture\, revealing dramatic views of the Hickory Nut Gorge\, Bearwallow Mountain\, Little Pisgah Mountain\, and in the distance the highest mountains in the eastern United States.  \nThis trail is made possible through a partnership between two local land trusts–Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) and Conserving Carolina. SAHC owns Strawberry Gap Preserve and worked with multiple private landowners to protect this beautiful mountain land with conservation easements. Conserving Carolina then built the trail\, which connects to Trombatore Trail at Blue Ridge Pastures. This brings us to more than 16 miles of connected trails in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge. \nThis hike is part of our corporate partnership with Highland Brewing Company in Asheville\, NC.  Highland donates a portion of sales of seasonal releases during the “release party” at the Tasting Room in Asheville to support SAHC’s land and water conservation efforts\, and we lead guided hikes for folks to experience and enjoy the natural landscapes for which these seasonal brews are named and beyond. \nAfter the hike we will have plenty of time to head back by Highland Brewing to enjoy all the festivities and share a Clawhammer together! \n*Please note that Strawberry Gap passes through privately owned land and dogs are not allowed on this trail.  \nCost – FREE for all participants\, (Pre-Registration is Required Below!) \n

DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, October 5th\, 2025\nTime: 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm\nWhere: SAHC’s Bull Creek Preserve at Warren Wilson College\nDifficulty: Moderate (4/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants (Pre-Registration is Required!)\n  \nJoin SAHC on a guided hike to celebrate the purchase of the new Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy’s Bull Creek Preserve at Warren Wilson College! This 191 acre tract consists of a beautiful cove and mixed forest\, an open 17-acre pasture with stunning views of the Black Mountains\, and lovely sections of Bull Creek with rocky streambanks and wading pools. A tributary of the Swannanoa River\, Bull Creek originates in the Black Mountains just south of Rattlesnake Lodge and the Blue Ridge Parkway\, draining an area of more than 10 square miles. Approximately 3 miles of single track hiking and biking trails traverse the property in an existing trail system. \nThis hike has a few steep sections along with some trip hazards such as roots and rocks\, but is mostly flat ground that winds through the forest with numerous different paths you can take to continue through the woods or walk along Bull Creek. We will split up into groups for a guided hike or you can take a map and explore on your own! \nSAHC’s purchase ensures protection of the property from future development\, preserving the scenic beauty of the landscape as well as water resources\, habitat\, and places for people to enjoy outdoor recreation. SAHC Board Member Maria Baron Palamar is going to share recommendations about places to visit\, equipment to make the visit safe and fun\, and the rules associated with natural spaces in our area. There will be a chance to ask questions and share advice with Maria and other members of SAHC\, an organization that protects natural spaces in the Appalachian mountains. \nMaria Baron Palamar\nMaria Baron Palamar DVM\, PhD. is a wildlife veterinarian and biologist. Maria is originally from Argentina\, but has lived in the US for almost 20 years working in natural spaces trying to connect people and nature. Maria moved to Asheville in 2020 and soon after became a board member for the SAHC. Maria is the co-founder of Resolve Conservation\, a company that helps create change in conservation and environmental organizations through capacity building and connection. Maria enjoys spending as much time as possible in nature\, swimming in rivers and discovering the mountains\, learning new things every day and sharing her knowledge with others.

SUMMARY:2025 Fire Safety and Land Management
DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday\, Oct. 11 from 10 am to 1 pm\nWhere: SAHC Community Farm – 180 Mag Sluder Rd\, Alexander\, NC\n\nSouthern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy is partnering with Blue Ridge RC&D\, Mountain Valleys RC&D\, Carolina Land and Lakes\, Piedmont Prescribed Burn Association\, and NC Forest Service to host a Fire Safety and Land Management Workshop. The training will include an introduction to forest management at the SAHC Community Farm\, firewise basics\, homeowner risk assessments\, information about prescribed fire as a land management strategy\, landscape-scale wildlife preparedness\, and more. We will have training and discussion time in the Education and Event building at the farm as well as a walk on the property.\n\n\n\nLunch will be provided. This event is free to attend\, but registration is required so that we can plan for the day\, including lunch.\n\n\n\nFill Out Form to Register to Attend Fire Safety and Land Management Workshop\n\n\nAbout the Presenting Partners:\n\n\nMountain Valleys RC&D\nMountain Valleys RC&D (Resource Conservation and Development) is a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable stewardship of forest resources that operates in eight counties in Western North Carolina\, inlcuding Buncombe County.  Communities near forests or other undeveloped areas are vulnerable to wildfires because they’re essentially surrounded by fuel.  Prescribed burning is a useful technique for managing forests\, however\, there are also many proactive steps that a community or individual homeowner can take to reduce the risk of loss; such as fuel reduction around the home\, maintaining clear gutters\, and fire resistant construction.  Mountain Valleys RC&D works with communities and governmental/private organizations to educate homeowners on how to best protect their property. \n  \nCommunity Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP)\nCarolina Land and Lakes was awarded the USDA Community Wildfire Defense Grant (CWDG) in FY22 and FY23 to update and create Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP) in 27 Counties in NC and for the Qualla Boundary of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. These counties are considered to have a High to Very High Wildfire Potential\, are Low Income and have experienced a natural disaster which has increased their wildfire risk. The CWPPs are developed at the fire district level to identify available resources and possible community actions to reduce fuels and structural ignitability. \nPiedmont Prescribed Burn Association\nWe are a community-based organization dedicated to increasing access to prescribed fire on lands in the Piedmont of North Carolina. The Piedmont Prescribed Burn Association welcomes individuals who are passionate about supporting conservation initiatives\, including private landowners\, natural resource professionals\, students\, and the general public. Together\, we strive to foster a collaborative environment to promote the responsible use of prescribed fire for the benefit of our local landscape.

DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, October 11th\nTime: 10:30 am\nWhere: Blackrock Mountain Trail\, Waterrock Knob Visitor Center\nDistance: 6 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants (Pre-Registration is Required!)\n  \nJoin Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy on Saturday\, October 11th to hike the Blackrock Mountain Trail to the summit of Blackrock Mountain with views of Thunderstruck Ridge\, Waterrock Knob and other 6\,000ft peaks! Participants will travel roughly 6 miles over rugged terrain through mystical red spruce\, fraser firs\, and red oak forests while periodically stopping at rock outcroppings for awe inspiring views. \nThis moderately strenuous hike contains numerous steep sections with some rock scrambling. During this time of year\, we’ll be seeing spectacular fall colors as well as Saw-Whet Owl and Carolina Northern Flying squirrel habitat! \nBlackrock Mountain in the Plott Balsam Mountains is part of a network of conservation lands in progress of being added to an expansion of national park land at Waterrock Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway. In 2013\, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased the summit of Blackrock Mountain\, with more than 250 surrounding acres. The property adjoins other conservation lands: SAHC’s 60-acre Blackrock Ridge tract (protected in 2010)\, the Sylva Watershed (protected with a conservation easement held by Mainspring Conservation Trust)\, and The Nature Conservancy’s Plott-Balsam Preserve. This moderate two mile scenic route will guide us through stunning forests of oaks\, maples\, and beech trees. The trail will wander beside Elk Hollow Branch and pass some vibrant meadows perfect for birdwatching. The Preserve is home to a variety of rare wildlife\, such as Golden-winged Warblers\, Southern Appalachian brook trout\, and Gray’s lilies. In addition\, SAHC has set up a well-maintained trail system\, a tent camping platform\, and a moldering privy! \nIt is hunting season\, so bright colored/blaze orange clothes and hats are strongly recommended. \nThe Elk Hollow Preserve is located about 1.5 hours north of Asheville\, NC\, and an hour from Johnson City\, TN. This property is located just outside of Spruce Pine\, NC\, so we will meet at the local Fox & Fig Bakery and caravan to the worksite together at 10:30 am! \nWhat To Bring: Close-toed shoes\, work gloves\, lunch\, water\, jacket/rain gear.
