SUMMARY:2026 March Rough Creek Watershed Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, March 28th\nTime: 10:00 am\nWhere: Rough Creek Watershed\nDistance: 5 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants (Pre-Registration is Required!)\n  \nWe’re hitting the trails to celebrate Highland Brewing Company’s seasonal Saint T’s Pale Ale by hiking the Rough Creek Watershed’s inner loop trail! Participants will hike a moderately strenuous 5 mile loop through a beautiful forest with a near pristine ecosystem. Our hike will consist of about 1\,000 ft of elevation gain\, most within the first two miles. This watershed contains nearly 7 miles of streams\, numerous seeps\, springs\, & swamp/bog areas which have become fairly uncommon with human inhabitants of the region. It also is home to many species of interesting & rare plants (painted trillium\, whorled pogonia) as well as a large & diverse animal population (salamanders\, turkey\, bear\, bobcats\, songbirds). For those interested\, the hike will be followed by celebrating with a Saint T’s Pale Ale. \nThe Rough Creek Watershed property\, located at 265 Rough Water Pt.\, consists of over 870 acres of beautiful & majestic land\, owned by the Town of Canton.  This property is located on the South side of the Newfound Mountain Range\, approximately 5 miles north of Canton in Western North Carolina. The Rough Creek Watershed Trail System is comprised of 3 trails of various distances\, totaling 10+ miles. \nIn 2002\, with the help of the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy\, a partnership was created between the Town of Canton & the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund. This relationship has led to the establishment of a conservation easement throughout the Rough Creek property\, ensuring the protection of its unique forest ecosystem & natural resources. \nThis hike is a part of SAHC’s “For Love of Beer and Mountains” corporate partnership with Highland Brewing Company and is a part of Highland’s “Thirst for Good” partnership.  Highland donates a portion of sales of seasonal releases during the “release party” at the Tasting Room in Asheville to support SAHC’s land and water conservation efforts\, and we lead guided hikes for folks to experience and enjoy the natural landscapes for which these seasonal brews are named and beyond. \n*Please note that dogs are not allowed on these trails.  \nCost – FREE for all participants\, (Pre-Registration is Required Below!)\nOops! SUMMARY:2026 Lunch and Learn - Mapping the Mountains
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lunch & Learn – Mapping the Mountains: Surveying & Technology in Land Conservation\nWednesday\, March 25 at 12:00 pm EST\nJoin Park Greer\, SAHC’s South Yellow Mountain Preserve Manager for a virtual Lunch & Learn exploring the intersection of land conservation\, land surveying\, and other measurement and monitoring technologies. Before Park joined the SAHC team he worked in land surveying specializing in stream restoration and is excited to share how historical and modern mapping technologies help conservationists better understand\, protect\, and steward the landscapes of the Southern Appalachian mountains. \nMany of these tools and practices are unfamiliar to most even though they impact our daily lives. Understanding the distinction between these tools\, their limitations\, and their uses helps land owners and land protectors to care for the world around them. From the history of surveying to interpreting and defining property boundaries to analyzing forest health and habitat connectivity\, these tools play a critical role in preserving farmland\, forests\, and mountain views for future generations. \nClick HERE to Register

SUMMARY:2026 Farm Workshop: Planning & Design - Climate Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Farm Planning & Design: Climate Resilience\nWhen: Thursday\, March 19\, 1 – 4 pm\nWhere: SAHC Community Farm\, 180 Mag Sluder Road Alexander\, NC 28701\n\nAre you looking for the perfect farm property but not sure how to create the best plan for your land? Join us for an introduction to planning and layout of land for small-scale farming with a focus on climate-resilient design. \nOur case study for this process will be a property just around the corner from the SAHC Community Farm in Alexander. We will have a virtual “walk through” site analysis of the property’s conditions using a number of land planning tools\, with a Permaculture approach. We will inventory conditions such as soils\, water\, wind\, aspect and more to create a multi-layered map of the site as a base for decision making. Using this information\, we will actively draw up together a concept for the site\, which addresses some of the needs and challenges identified in the analysis phase.  Through this design process we will cover how to avoid making a $10\,000 “bad decision” when beginning with infrastructure improvements. \nThis workshop will be particularly appropriate for participants who already own or lease land\, as well as those who plan to do so in the future. Our focus will be on growers and how best to make design decisions for resiliency. \n\n  \nPre-registration is required. Farm workshop fee is $20; no one turned away for inability to pay. \nFor questions\, contact SAHC Community Farm Manager Chris Link\, chris@appalachian.org. \nRegistration for this workshop has now closed.\n  \n\n  \n\n  \nSAHC Community Farm work is funded in part by grants from The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina\, a grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program (under grant award number 2021-70033-35717)\, and a cost-share grant from USDA Natural Resources Conservati

SUMMARY:Livestake Planting Work Day with NCWF\, at Bowditch Bottoms Preserve
DESCRIPTION:What: Livestake Volunteer Planting Workday\nWhere: SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve\, near Burnsville\, NC\nWhen: Friday\, March 6 from 9 am to 12 pm\nJoin the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a livestaking workday at SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms in Yancey County. \nBowditch Bottoms contains a mosaic of habitat types including mixed hardwood forest\, open field\, natural wetland\, and a riparian area that buffers over a half mile of Ayles Creek within the South Toe River Watershed. \nLivestaking is a restoration technique where dormant stem cuttings from trees and shrubs are planted directly into the ground. These cuttings root and grow into new plants. Join us as we plant livestakes along Ayles Creek in areas left bare and susceptible to invasive plant species following Helene. We will plant a variety of native species including ninebark\, silky willow\, elderberry\, and more in an effort to control erosion and enhance habitat for both terrestrial and aquatic wildlife. \nThis work day is a continuation of our partnership with NCWF; we joined together in managing invasive plants species through a series of volunteer work days on this preserves in 2025. Please help us continue the momentum as we repair and restore the stream corridor! \nThis event is free and open to the public.  \nClick HERE to Register

DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, February 28th\nTime: 11:00 am\nWhere: Strawberry Gap to Blue Ridge Pastures\nDistance: 6 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants (Pre-Registration is Required!)\n  \nFinish the Winter Hiking Challenge strong and in community by joining Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a guided hike to Blue Ridge Pastures via the Strawberry Gap Trail! \nThis hike is only for participants registered for the 2026 Winter Hiking Challenge. \nWe will hike a moderately strenuous 6 mile out-and-back through a beautiful forest while taking in sweeping views of Fairview\, NC before arriving at the remote Blue Ridge Pastures. \nStrawberry Gap is in the stunning Upper Hickory Nut Gorge trail network and climbs upward for three miles through beautiful\, boulder-strewn forests. About halfway up\, a rock outcrop offers sweeping views over a picturesque valley and range upon range of distant\, blue mountains. The climax of this trail is Blue Ridge Pastures\, where the forests give way to a ridgeline pasture\, revealing dramatic views of the Hickory Nut Gorge\, Bearwallow Mountain\, Little Pisgah Mountain\, and in the distance the highest mountains in the eastern United States.  \nThis trail is made possible through a partnership between two local land trusts–Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) and Conserving Carolina. SAHC owns Strawberry Gap Preserve and worked with multiple private landowners to protect this beautiful mountain land with conservation easements. Conserving Carolina then built the trail\, which connects to Trombatore Trail at Blue Ridge Pastures. This brings us to more than 16 miles of connected trails in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge. \n*Please note that Strawberry Gap passes through privately owned land and dogs are not allowed on this trail.  \nRegister Below!\nOops! DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, December 13th\nTime: Starting at 10:00 AM\nWhere: Asbury Trail\nDistance: 6 miles \nDifficulty: Moderately Strenuous (6/10)\, several long\, steep inclines and descents are present on this trail.\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED below\n  \nJoin SAHC for a guided group hike on the Asbury Trail at Cove Creek Gap along the boundary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This hike is a steady descent and gradually becomes steeper moving towards Cataloochee Creek. This will be an out and back hike of about 6 miles total. \nAlong this hike we will pass five SAHC protected tracts that sit between the Smokies and Pisgah National Forest buffering its boundary from incompatible real-estate development. The last property we will come across\, which we will be celebrating one year of protecting\, is the 407 acre White Oak Mountain tract on the eastern edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). Protection of this property and others buffering the park provides exceptional habitat for a variety of plant and animal species in an important corridor for wildlife movement\, scenic views from the Appalachian Trail\, and water quality in headwater tributaries of the Pigeon River watershed. \nNo dogs are allowed on this hike. \nAfter registering\, you’ll receive directions\, meeting instructions\, and other important details a couple days prior to the event date. \nIf you have any questions please email SAHC Outreach Program Manager Erin Goodpaster at erin@appalachian.org \nREGISTER HERE\n\n \n \n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Email(Required)\n \n Questions or Comments?(Required)Let us know what's on your mind. This will require volunteers to work with weed eaters\, hand tools\, and saws. This event will be a great opportunity to work with friends\, get your hands dirty\, see a beautiful waterfall\, and enjoy a great day outside in the Roan Highlands. We’ll have hot cider and hot cocoa for folks to warm up with! \nThis property is located just outside of Roan Mountain\, TN\, 1.5 hours northeast of Asheville\, NC and 45mins southeast of Johnson City\, TN. Driving directions will be sent to volunteers following registration. \nWhat To Bring: Close-toed shoes\, work gloves\, lunch\, water\, jacket/rain gear. SUMMARY:2025 November Chestnut Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, November 21\nTime: Starting at 11:00 AM\nWhere: Chestnut Mountain Nature Park\nDistance: 6 miles \nDifficulty: Moderately Strenuous (6/10)\, several long\, steep inclines are present on this trail\nCost: FREE for members\, $10 for non-members\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED below\n  \nJoin SAHC for a guided group hike at Chestnut Mountain Nature Park in Canton\, NC on Friday\, November 21st at 11 am. We will hike 6 miles on the Old Timer Loop via the Papertown Express Trail. This hike is rated moderately strenuous\, containing many extended steep sections with some rocky terrain and about 800 feet of elevation gain. Be aware that bikers can also use the Papertown Trail\, so we may encounter riders. \nSAHC purchased the 448-acre Chestnut Mountain tract in 2020 and then transferred the property to the Town of Canton in 2022. Chestnut Mountain Nature Park opened to the public in April 2022 and hosts over 15 miles of trails. \nThis property is a critical piece of a larger wildlife corridor connecting the Pisgah National Forest to Sandy Mush and Cherokee Forest of East Tennessee. Conservation of the land permanently protected nine miles of streams\, including a section of Hominy Creek. \nConservation of the Chestnut Mountain property was made possible through funding from the North Carolina Land and Water Fund\, the NC Attorney General’s Office’s Environmental Enhancement Grant Program\, The Pigeon River Fund of The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina\, the Conservation Trust for North Carolina\, many private donors\, and a bridge loan from the The Conservation Fund. \n  \nAfter registering\, you’ll receive directions\, meeting instructions\, and other important details a couple days prior to the event date. \nIf you have any questions please email SAHC Outreach Program Manager Erin Goodpaster at erin@appalachian.org \nREGISTER HERE\n \nLearn more about Chestnut Mountain Nature Park

SUMMARY:2025 Clawtoberfest Hike - Strawberry Gap Trail
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, September 20th\nTime: 10:00 am\nWhere: Strawberry Gap to Blue Ridge Pastures\nDistance: 6 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants (Pre-Registration is Required!)\n  \nKick-off Clawtoberfest with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy by joining us for a guided hike for Highland Brewing Company’s “Thirst for Good” partnership!  We’re hitting the trails to celebrate Highland Brewing Company’s seasonal Clawhammer Oktoberfest Lager by hiking to Blue Ridge Pastures via the Strawberry Gap Trail. Participants will hike a moderately strenuous 6 mile out-and-back through a beautiful forest while taking in sweeping views of Fairview\, NC before arriving at the remote Blue Ridge Pastures. \nThis hike is part of our corporate partnership with Highland Brewing Company in Asheville\, NC. \nAfter the hike we will have plenty of time to head back by Highland Brewing to enjoy all the festivities and share a Clawhammer together! \n*Please note that Strawberry Gap passes through privately owned land and dogs are not allowed on this trail.  \nCost – FREE for all participants\, (Pre-Registration is Required Below!) \n

SUMMARY:2025 Free the Fir Volunteer Work Day in the Roan Highlands
DESCRIPTION:When: September 11\, 2025 (9:30 am-3:30 pm)\, Rain Date September 16\, 2025 \nWhat: Tropical Storm Helene caused extensive damage to the red spruce-Fraser fir forest in and around Toll House Gap and Roan High Knob. Our partners at the U.S. Forest Service cleared this area of storm damaged trees under a compressed timeline\, using tree material as matting to prevent erosion. We would like to “jump start” natural forest regeneration in this area by releasing small spruce and fir saplings and wildflowers that may be covered or bent over under matting or downed tree branches. \nHow: We will canvas the entire cleared area (roughly 25 acres)\, identifying and uncovering any healthy saplings that we can find and easily release. We will not use any mechanized tools or move large pieces of debris. \nHeads Up: While this work is fairly gentle\, it does require the ability to scramble over a very rugged area with uneven footing\, potential holes\, and rocks. Please do not sign up for this event if you have knee\, back or balance issues. This event is not suitable for small children or dogs. \nWhere: Meet at the Roan High Knob (aka Cloudland) Parking Area at 9:30 am (Directions – https://maps.app.goo.gl/sYNgMT9rLegTH4Ci7) \nWhat to Wear: Dress for the weather and work outside. Please wear long pants and sturdy work boots and bring rain gear. \nWhat to Bring: Bring your lunch\, water\, and gear in addition to leather work gloves\, eye protection\, and any small hand tools (loppers\, garden claws\, small hoes) that may help uncover seedlings. Bathrooms and handwashing are available at the Cloudland Parking Area\, but there is no potable water. \nSchedule:\n9:30 – 10:00 – Sign in\, safety talk\, split into crews and begin work\n12:30 – 1:00 – Lunch with your crew\n1:30 – 3:00 – Continue work (return to parking area when finished)\n3:30 – Meet back at parking area for wrap up\, thanks\, and goodbyes \n  \nFor questions or more information\, contact Roan Stewardship Director Marquette Crockett at marquette@appalachian.org. \nThank you for your interest in volunteering with SAHC. The registration for this work day is now closed.
