This special hike will begin in the parking area\, hike along crystal clear streams\, traverse mountainsides\, cross historic sites\, and ultimately hit the Appalachian Trail before returning to our starting point. These trails are all beautifully designed and crafted by the Rocky Fork Gorillas and members of the Friends of Rocky Fork. These members have also volunteered to lead the way through this wild landscape and highlight historic events. \nRocky Fork State Park is named after the cool waters that run down its center and is located along the Appalachian Trail corridor and the Tennessee-North Carolina border\, between Johnson City\, TN and Asheville\, NC.   The property is adjacent to more than 22\,000 acres of U.S. Forest Service-designated wilderness. Before Rocky Fork’s acquisition by The Conservation Fund and U.S. Forest Service\, it was one of the largest unprotected tracts in the southern Appalachian Mountains. From 2006-2012\, SAHC lobbied congress to secure funding to protect 10\,000 acres of the Rocky Fork watershed that was previously slated for development. With help from Senator Lamar Alexander and many other partners\, SAHC secured funding\, and the property was acquired from a timbering company. SUMMARY:2024 Farm Workshop: Planning and Planting Food Forest Systems on Contour\, Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Feb. 29 from 10 am to 4 pm \nAgroforestry and food forests are terms describing a diverse planting of edible plants that attempts to mimic the ecosystems and patterns found in nature for a variety of social and environmental benefits. If you don’t know much about agroforestry\, we have great news — we are starting our second agroforestry project at the SAHC Community Farm. \nAlong with Contour Lines Corp we will be leading the planting of a 3-acre diversified food forest which will feature a number of fruit trees and native support trees planted on contour in a system of berms and swales.  This is a unique demonstration project on conservation land\, which will be managed in perpetuity so that we can all learn about the numerous benefits and beauty of perennial agroforestry and food forest systems. \nFolks will receive a solid introduction on how to plan and plant a food forest agroforestry site that includes hundreds of fruit and support trees on a berm and swale contour system. Some species we will be planting include Black Locust\, Willow\, Cottonwood\, Elderberry\, Mulberry\, Persimmon\, Apple\, Pear\, Blueberry\, Fig and Peaches. \nJoin us\, rain or shine\, for all or any part of the day to learn\, observe\, and take part in planting if you choose. Please bring a water bottle\, gloves\, raincoat/work clothes if you’re planting; tools will be provided. \nLunch will be provided midway between our morning classroom portion\, and then the rest of the day will be hands-on work. \nLocation: SAHC Community Farm at 180 Mag Sluder Road\, Alexander\, NC 28701 \nQuestions: Contact Community Farm Manager Chris Link at chris@appalachian.org. \nPre-registration is requested. Owned by the Town of Canton\, this beautiful property is a testament to the region’s commitment to preserving its scenic landscapes. What’s more\, this little-known gem of an outdoor destination is open to the public\, inviting hikers and mountain bikers alike to discover its beauty year-round. The Rough Creek Watershed Trail System is comprised of 3 trails of various distances\, totaling 10+ miles. \nSAHC was instrumental in the protection of this expansive conservation easement held by the Clean Water Management Trust Fund\, co-managed with SAHC and owned by the Town of Canton. The Preserve is open to the public and encompasses over 250 acres. Bailey Mountain is the highest peak visible from the Town of Mars Hill\, and this mountain figures prominently in the history of the Town and Mars Hill University. The preserve offers six contiguous miles of hiking trails\, masterfully built and maintained by the dedicated volunteers and the Friends of Bailey Mountain. Bowman Memorial Trail. The trail will lead us through beautiful forests of oaks\, maples\, and beech trees\, as well as early successional meadows perfect for bird spotting. The Preserve boasts a bounty of rare wildlife\, including Golden-winged Warblers\, Southern Appalachian brook trout\, and Gray’s lilies. Additionally\, SAHC has installed a camping platform\, intact trail system\, and a moldering privy which will leave you excited to visit us again. \nThis hike is part of our “For Love of Beer and Mountains” partnership with Highland Brewing Company\, celebrating the release of their Nuts and Volts coffee porter. Participants will hike a moderately strenuous 3 miles out-and-back through a beautiful forest while taking in sweeping views of Fairview\, NC. \nStrawberry Gap is the newest trail in the stunning Upper Hickory Nut Gorge trail network–just opened in September 2022! The trail climbs upward for a mile and a half through beautiful\, boulder-strewn forests. At the summit\, a rock outcrop offers sweeping views over a picturesque valley backdropped by the distant\, Black Mountains.  \nThis trail is made possible through a partnership between two local land trusts\, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy and Conserving Carolina. SAHC owns Strawberry Gap Preserve and worked with multiple private landowners to protect this beautiful mountain land with conservation easements. Conserving Carolina then built the trail\, which connects to Trombatore Trail at Blue Ridge Pastures. DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, October 21st\nTime: 10:30 am\nWhere: Waterrock Knob Visitor Center\, Blue Ridge Parkway\nDistance:  5 miles\nDifficulty: 5 miles (out and back)\, rugged\, rocky terrain with steep elevation change\nCost: FREE for all participants (pre-registration is required)\nJoin the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy on October 21st for a moderately strenuous hike to enjoy Blackrock Ridge with views of Thunderstruck Ridge\, Waterrock Knob and other 6\,00ft peaks! Participants will travel 5 miles of rugged terrain through mystical red spruce\, Fraser firs\, and red oak forests while periodically stopping at rock outcroppings for awe inspiring views. During this time of year\, we’ll be seeing spectacular fall colors as well as Saw-Whet Owl and Carolina Northern Flying squirrel habitat! \nBlackrock Mountain in the Plott Balsam Mountains is part of a network of conservation lands in progress of being added to an expansion of national park land at Waterrock Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway. In 2013\, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased the summit of Blackrock Mountain\, with more than 250 surrounding acres. The property adjoins other conservation lands: SAHC’s 60-acre Blackrock Ridge tract (protected in 2010)\, the Sylva Watershed (protected with a conservation easement held by the Land Trust for the Little Tennessee)\, and The Nature Conservancy’s Plott-Balsam Preserve. SAHC’s conservation work in this area protects high elevation habitat and pristine headwater streams. \nThank you for taking interest in our outing with Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy!\n \nI am sorry to say that our outing is currently FULL and we cannot accept any more attendees at this time. SUMMARY:2023 Volunteer Trail Workday - Little Cove Creek Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, October 6th\nTime: 10:00am\nWhere: Little Cove Creek Preserve\, Nilsen Cabin\nDistance:  Variable\, 1-3 miles\nDifficulty: Easy (5/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants\nJoin the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy  and the Roan Stewardship team for a volunteer workday at the Nilsen Cabin on our Little Cove Creek Preserve. This iconic property\, located on the Tennessee side of the Roan Highlands\, is one of our original land acquisition projects in the area. Recently the preserve was expanded to include an adjoining 17 acres\, the Nilsen Cabin on site was renovated\, and a trail system was agreed upon to take visitors from the cabin to a nearby waterfall. Now we need your help to formalize and establish the new trail design. This will require volunteers to work with weed eaters\, hand tools\, and saws to complete the trail which will be roughly a mile and will include a historic graveyard from the 1800’s. DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, September 30th\nTime: 10:00 am\nWhere: Pisgah National Forest near Brevard\, NC\nDistance:  10.5 miles\nDifficulty: Very strenuous (10+). 10+ mile hike with significant elevation change.\nCost: FREE for all participants (pre-registration is required)\nJoin the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy to celebrate our “For Love of Beer and Mountains” partnerships. This hike to Clawhammer Mountain\, namesake of Highland Brewing Company’s seasonal Clawhammer Oktoberfest Lager\, will be a long and strenuous 10+ mile trip along multi-use trails that traverse mountain bike\, equestrian\, and hiking trails as well as forest service roads. We will follow the trails up a steep climb along a creek\, through wildflower patches and rich cove forest. From Clawhammer Cove to the summit\, we will climb close to 1\,900 feet to finish at 4\,072 ft elevation. The cliff-top view at the summit offers scenic views of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Looking Glass in Pisgah National Forest. \nThis hike is part of our corporate partnership with Highland Brewing Company in Asheville\, NC. During September many of our beloved birds of summer will be migrating through this exact location on Mount Mitchell\, the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River. After days of flying south\, migratory birds can easily be found at this location on the Blue Ridge Parkway temporarily resting their wings along their journey to Central and South America. We will gather first thing in the morning to witness these beautiful animals before they disappear from the Southern Appalachian mountains for the winter. \nThis special experience is being made possible by our partner and friends at the Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter (BRAC)\, who have long supported SAHC’s land protection efforts to conserve critical bird habitat throughout the Southern Appalachians. The BRAC have kindly offered their time and expertise to lead this outing to help participants properly see and identify birds. A limited number of binoculars will be provided to attendees. This hike will celebrate the 2023 Year of the Trail to help interested residents\, visitors and trails enthusiasts in the area (and across the state) find and attend events\, connect with others\, and learn more about advocating for trails in NC. \nThis moderate 3-mile hike will take hikers along a high elevation ridgeline with remarkable views. We will start out on the Mountains-to-Sea trail and split off to climb Snowball Mountain. Next\, we will continue North to Hawkbill Rock where we will look back onto the property and into the Woodfin Watershed— another SAHC-protected landmark. Hikers should be prepared for a short trip\, but steep elevation changes along the way. Snowball Mountain was one of the marquee parcels that pushed SAHC past the 50\,000-acre milestone mark at the end of 2011. \nCome and enjoy this beautiful property and learn about SAHC’s projects in this spectacular area of the Black Mountain range. In 2012\, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased 90 acres on Snowball Mountain in Buncombe County\, permanently preserving scenic views for recreational visitors\, clean water sources for area residents\, and habitat for native species. Nestled in the beautiful Craggy Mountains\, this tract is highly visible from the Blue Ridge Parkway and national forest land\, and it adjoins the publicly accessible Snowball Mountain Trail and Camp Sequoyah Trail. \nSAHC’s Snowball Mountain tract joins a significant swath of state and federal protected land\, contributing another piece to a vast network of over 125\,000 acres of contiguous protected forestlands.  The trail overlooks national forest land and the Woodfin Watershed\, which SAHC protects with a conservation easement. \nWhat To Bring: hiking shoes\, lunch\, water\, jacket/rain gear\, camera\, and please dress in layers. \nDogs: Dogs are allowed. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to katie@appalachian.org. \nCost – $10 or Free to Members. Participants will hike a moderately strenuous 6 mile out-and-back through a beautiful forest while taking in sweeping views of Fairview\, NC before arriving at the remote Blue Ridge Pastures. \nStrawberry Gap is the newest trail in the stunning Upper Hickory Nut Gorge trail network–just opened in September 2022! The trail climbs upward for three miles through beautiful\, boulder-strewn forests. About halfway up\, a rock outcrop offers sweeping views over a picturesque valley and range upon range of distant\, blue mountains. The climax of this trail is Blue Ridge Pastures\, where the forests give way to a ridgeline pasture\, revealing dramatic views of the Hickory Nut Gorge\, Bearwallow Mountain\, Little Pisgah Mountain\, and in the distance the highest mountains in the eastern United States.  \nThis trail is made possible through a partnership between two local land trusts–Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) and Conserving Carolina. SAHC owns Strawberry Gap Preserve and worked with multiple private landowners to protect this beautiful mountain land with conservation easements. Conserving Carolina then built the trail\, which connects to Trombatore Trail at Blue Ridge Pastures. Simultaneously\, the garlic that was panted last year at the farm is ready for harvest! Harvesting garlic is a fun process of getting your hands dirty and helping secure healthy food for our local community. \nIf planning to attend\, please come prepared with closed toed shoes\, long pants\, a water bottle\, sun protection\, and a pack lunch.
