SUMMARY:2023 Volunteer Trail Workday - Little Cove Creek Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, October 6th\nTime: 10:00am\nWhere: Little Cove Creek Preserve\, Nilsen Cabin\nDistance:  Variable\, 1-3 miles\nDifficulty: Easy (5/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants\nJoin the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy  and the Roan Stewardship team for a volunteer workday at the Nilsen Cabin on our Little Cove Creek Preserve. This iconic property\, located on the Tennessee side of the Roan Highlands\, is one of our original land acquisition projects in the area. Recently the preserve was expanded to include an adjoining 17 acres\, the Nilsen Cabin on site was renovated\, and a trail system was agreed upon to take visitors from the cabin to a nearby waterfall. Now we need your help to formalize and establish the new trail design. This will require volunteers to work with weed eaters\, hand tools\, and saws to complete the trail which will be roughly a mile and will include a historic graveyard from the 1800’s. This event will be a great opportunity to work with friends\, get your hands dirty\, see a beautiful waterfall\, and enjoy a great day outside in the Roan Highlands. \nThis property is located 1.5 hours northeast of Asheville\, NC and 45mins southeast of Johnson City\, TN. Driving direction will be sent to volunteers following registration. \nWhat To Bring: Close-toed shoes\, work gloves\, lunch\, water\, jacket/rain gear. Please dress in layers\, the weather can be much cooler at this elevation during October. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to roanseasonal@appalachian.org. \nCost – Free for everyone. Pre-registration is required. \nThank you for your interest in volunteering! Registration for this work day is now closed.

SUMMARY:2023 Autumn Birding with Blue Ridge Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, September 15th\nTime: 8:30am\nWhere: Ridge Junction Overlook\, Blue Ridge Parkway\nDistance:  NO hiking involved\, walking is limited\nDifficulty: Easy (1/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants\nJoin the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy  and the Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter for a morning of birding along the Blue Ridge Parkway. During September many of our beloved birds of summer will be migrating through this exact location on Mount Mitchell\, the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi River. After days of flying south\, migratory birds can easily be found at this location on the Blue Ridge Parkway temporarily resting their wings along their journey to Central and South America. We will gather first thing in the morning to witness these beautiful animals before they disappear from the Southern Appalachian mountains for the winter. \nThis special experience is being made possible by our partner and friends at the Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter (BRAC)\, who have long supported SAHC’s land protection efforts to conserve critical bird habitat throughout the Southern Appalachians. The BRAC have kindly offered their time and expertise to lead this outing to help participants properly see and identify birds. A limited number of binoculars will be provided to attendees. Early bird gets the worm! \nWhat To Bring: close-toed shoes\, a snack\, water\, jacket/rain gear\, camera\, and binoculars. Extras binoculars will be available if you don’t have any. Please dress in layers\, the weather can be much cooler at this elevation during September. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to katie@appalachian.org. \nCost – Free for everyone. SUMMARY:2023 Year of the Trail - Snowball Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, September 8th\nTime: 10:30am\nWhere: Snowball Mountain off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Craggy Gardens Picnic Area\nDistance: 3 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: Free for Members. $10 for non-members.\nJoin Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a hike to the protected Snowball Mountain. This hike will celebrate the 2023 Year of the Trail to help interested residents\, visitors and trails enthusiasts in the area (and across the state) find and attend events\, connect with others\, and learn more about advocating for trails in NC. \nThis moderate 3-mile hike will take hikers along a high elevation ridgeline with remarkable views. We will start out on the Mountains-to-Sea trail and split off to climb Snowball Mountain. Next\, we will continue North to Hawkbill Rock where we will look back onto the property and into the Woodfin Watershed— another SAHC-protected landmark. Hikers should be prepared for a short trip\, but steep elevation changes along the way. Snowball Mountain was one of the marquee parcels that pushed SAHC past the 50\,000-acre milestone mark at the end of 2011. \nCome and enjoy this beautiful property and learn about SAHC’s projects in this spectacular area of the Black Mountain range. In 2012\, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased 90 acres on Snowball Mountain in Buncombe County\, permanently preserving scenic views for recreational visitors\, clean water sources for area residents\, and habitat for native species. Nestled in the beautiful Craggy Mountains\, this tract is highly visible from the Blue Ridge Parkway and national forest land\, and it adjoins the publicly accessible Snowball Mountain Trail and Camp Sequoyah Trail. \nSAHC’s Snowball Mountain tract joins a significant swath of state and federal protected land\, contributing another piece to a vast network of over 125\,000 acres of contiguous protected forestlands.  The trail overlooks national forest land and the Woodfin Watershed\, which SAHC protects with a conservation easement. \nWhat To Bring: hiking shoes\, lunch\, water\, jacket/rain gear\, camera\, and please dress in layers. \nDogs: Dogs are allowed. \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to katie@appalachian.org. \nCost – $10 or Free to Members. Pre-registration is required. \nRegistration FULL\nThank you for your interest in this hike; however\, this hike is currently full. SUMMARY:Farm workshop: Agroforestry Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:So\, you planned and planted an agroforestry project. Now what? \nEarlier this year\, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy planted thousands of trees and shrubs in a new demonstration silvopasture project on 8 acres of pasture at the SAHC Community Farm\, with a lot of help from volunteers and our partners at Contours Lines! Contour Lines\, a nonprofit\, specializes in efficient establishment of agroforestry systems with a high seedling survival rate.  Contour Lines has planted over 7\,000 agroforestry systems in three countries.   They are hosting a 2-part workshop series with SAHC to teach more people how to plan and plant a silvopasture agroforestry sites on contour\, combining sloped soil management with sustainable agriculture. \nThis month\, we are hosting Part 2 in our 2-part silvopasture workshop series. We invite you to come learn about agroforestry maintenance. This class will focus on the termination and management of cover crops\, pruning\, organic pest management\, and mulching practices. \nThis workshop is great for anyone who is interested in learning more about silvopasture and agroforestry systems in the southern Appalachian mountains. \nCost: $20/per person (No one turned away for inability to pay)\n\nAbout the project: SAHC received a $6\,000 Catalyzing Agroforestry Grant to support this project\, and nonprofit organization Contour Lines  Corp. (contourlines.org) is donating plant material\, design and expertise for hands-on workshops to help execute the silvopasture project on the SAHC Community Farm. The Catalyzing Agroforestry Grants Program is an initiative funded by the Appalachian Beginning Forest Farming Coalition (ABFFC) and Edwards Mother Earth Foundation (EMEF) that is managed by Virginia Tech University in partnership with Rural Action\, Appalachian Sustainable Development\, The Yew Mountain Center\, North Carolina State University. \n\n\nRegister for This Workshop\n\n\n\n\nClick HERE to pay for this workshop AFTER REGISTERING \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSilvopasture at the Community Farm\nGoal:\nOur aim with this acreage is to make productive and educational/demonstrative use of the hilly pasture on the SAHC Community Farm\, which sees a lot of visitors (both adults and school groups from the community). We currently have no other agroforestry or silvopasture production open to the public in our community\, and we feel this will be a valuable learning site for current and future growers in the area! Carbon sequestration\, value added products and perennial/no till crops are just a few of the beneficial environmental and economic factors which lead us to initiate this specific multi crop plan. We are confident it will be a great fit for our farm and the needs of our region. \nDuring our first phase we converted 8 acres of pasture land into silvopasture by cutting in swales slightly of contour.  We planted a multi-species perennial crop of trees and shrubs for multiple outputs.  Varieties planted included locust\, mulberry\, paw-paw\, hazelnut\, sycamore\, indigo\, cottonwood\, elderberry and others.  In our second phase\, we will continue maintenance and management of the silvopasture project area\, which will produce food\, fodder\, fuel\, shade\, habitat\, water conservation and other impacts. \nPartnership with Contour Lines:\nSouthern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) and  Contour Lines Corp are teaming up to plant this demonstration agroforestry plot. The site is designed as an educational tool that will demonstrate regenerative agriculture and soil conservation techniques. This site will serve as a model for larger scale land restoration projects including native species reforestation\, diversified fruit and nut production\, and silvopasture farming. \n\n\n\n

From the creek\, the group will continue following the creek down another 1\,000 ft in elevation to SAHC’s Little Cove Creek Preserve where we will be hosting a Drop-in Social with drinks and refreshments. This challenge hike will literally end at a party!  \nOverall\, this hike will be a 3 three mile\, one-way hike\, with -2\,000 ft of elevation change. The driving distance between the Carvers Gap and the SAHC’s Little Cove Creek Preserve is 9 miles (18 minutes estimated drive time). Setting shuttle cars will be required for this hike and will be coordinated amongst registrants. This hike will not be high mileage but will cover rugged terrain.  \nThank you for taking interest in our outing with Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy!\n\nI am sorry to say that our outing is currently FULL and we cannot accept any more attendees at this time. However\, if you are still interested in the hike\, please contact me at travis@appalachian.org and your name and email will be put on a wait-list. SUMMARY:2023 Roan Garlic Mustard Pull with Appalachian Trail Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:Ready to get your hands dirty for a volunteer work day? Our partners at Appalachian Trail Conservancy are hosting a garlic mustard pull in the Highlands of Roan. This invasive plant spreads readily along roadways and heavily trafficked trails\, squeezing out native species and disrupting ecosystems. Garlic mustard is prolific but easy to pull\, so the ATC has issued a Garlic Mustard Challenge along the Appalachian Trail\, in which volunteer groups from Maine to Georgia compete to see who can pull the most garlic mustard. \nClick HERE for More Info and Volunteer Sign-Up

SUMMARY:Farm Workshop: Planning and Planting Agroforestry Systems on Contour
DESCRIPTION:Please join us\, rain or shine\, for any part of the day so that you’re able to learn\, observe and take part in PLANTING DAY of our first phase (8 acres!) of what will be a long standing vision at our Community Farm property: the first and only demonstration project currently in NC which will be open to the public and managed in perpetuity\, so that we can all learn about the numerous benefits and beauty of a perennial agroforestry and silvopasture system on conservation land. \nContour Lines is the nonprofit we’re fortunate to be working with for this workshop series. They have planted over 7\,000 agroforestry systems in three countries and offer a multitude of expertise of this fascinating\, progressive farming practice. \nFolks will get a good introduction on how to plan and plant a silvopasture agroforestry site that includes thousands of fruit and nut trees (hazelnut\, mulberry\, and several others) on a berm and swale contour system which will be grazed in future. \n\nSAHC received a Catalyzing Agroforestry Grant to support this project; the ultimate goal of the effort is to increase ecosystem sustainability and diversity by scaling up agroforestry practices on historic livestock pastures like ours. \nSuggested donation: $20 (No one turned away for inability to pay)\n\nLunch will be provided midway between our morning classroom portion and then the rest of the day will be hands-on work in the adjacent field learning as we plant with the team from Contour Lines! Again\, we want everyone to feel welcome\, so if you leave early/come late or just observe the team during the active planting\, please feel free. Children welcome as well\, and if you register after 3/8 please BYO lunch as that’s the date we’ll place orders\, thanks!\n \nPlease bring a waterbottle\, gloves\, raincoat/work clothes if you’re planting\, tools will be provided.\n \n\n\nLocation: SAHC Community Farm Education Center on Mag Sluder Rd in Alexander\, NC (20 minutes from central Asheville) \n\n\nRegister for This Workshop\n\n\n\n\nClick HERE to pay for this workshop AFTER REGISTERING \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSilvopasture at the Community Farm\nSAHC received a $6\,000 Catalyzing Agroforestry Grant to support this project\, and Contour Lines is donating plant material\, design and expertise for hands-on workshops to help execute a silvopasture project on the SAHC Community Farm. This demonstration agroforestry plot is designed as an educational tool that will demonstrate regenerative agriculture and soil conservation techniques. This site will serve as a model for larger scale land restoration projects including native species reforestation\, diversified fruit and nut production\, and silvopasture farming. \nThe Catalyzing Agroforestry Grant Program is focused on implementing silvopastures and forest farming practices; the ultimate goal of the effort is to increase ecosystem sustainability and diversity by scaling up agroforestry practices. SAHC’s project is part of a growing Agroforestry Regional Knowledge (ARK) Exchange that serves as a framework for future growth of agroforestry adoption. The ARK Exchange will support ecocultural learning\, workforce development\, and networking of producer peers\, nonprofit organizations\, academic institutions\, and governmental and nongovernmental partners. \nOur aim with the silvopasture acreage on the SAHC Community Farm is to make productive and educational/demonstrative use of our hilly pasture\, which sees a lot of visitors (both adults and school groups from the community). We currently have no agroforestry or silvopasture production open to the public in our community\, and SAHC feels it will be a valuable learning site for current and future growers in the area! Carbon sequestration\, value added products and perennial/no till crops are just a few of the beneficial environmental and economic factors which lead us to initiate this specific multi crop plan\, and we are confident it will be a great fit for our farm and the needs of our region. \nDuring our first phase we will begin converting 8 acres of pasture land into silvopasture by cutting in swales slightly of contour.  We will be planting a multi-species perennial crop of trees and shrubs for multiple outputs.  Varieties being planted include locust\, mulberry\, paw-paw\, hazelnut\, sycamore\, indigo\, cottonwood\, elderberry and others.  We will produce food\, fodder\, fuel\, shade\, habitat\, water conservation and other positive impacts.

SUMMARY:Virtual Lunch and Learn: Roan Highlands Visitor Use Management
DESCRIPTION:Do you love the Highlands of Roan? Join Marquette Crockett (Roan Stewardship Director at Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy)\,  Jen Barnhart (District Ranger at U.S. Forest Service\, Pisgah National Forest\, Appalachian Ranger District)\, Morgan Sommerville (Director\, Visitor Use Management at Appalachian Trail Conservancy)\, and Jerry Kyle (High Country Regional Manager at Appalachian Trail Conservancy) for a special presentation on visitor use management in this fragile landscape. \nThe Roan Highlands are one of the most unique landscapes in the Eastern United States – How Can We Keep It That Way?\nOur public lands have become even more popular than in years past with the readily available information online and social media. We want folks to get outdoors\, connect with their public lands\, and hopefully become stewards of those lands. Unfortunately\, this can also cause visitor use management issues that can have negative ecological impacts\, loss of character of that landscape\, and/or decreased visitor experiences. What are land managers and stakeholders to do? Come learn what the US Forest Service and partners are doing to address these issues in the Roan Highlands through the collaborative efforts of the Roan Highlands Visitor Use Management committee. \nClick HERE to Register in advance for this webinar: \nRegister Now \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \nTo learn more\, check out this PDF about the Roan Highlands Visitor Use Management Committee: Roan Highlands_VUM_Committee_About.Us_1.27.2023

Continue with us after this hike for additional miles as we press further up Roaring Creek along the Overmountain Victory Trail to Yellow Mountain Gap.
