Please come prepared with sturdy footwear\, plenty of water\, and snacks. \n\nHikers will climb nearly 900 feet in elevation to a rocky outcrop overlooking the southern portion of the preserve before returning to the cool\, shaded groves of a rich cove forest. Meandering through the rhododendron and oaks\, Park will interpret the ancient and modern history of the rocks that form the foundations of our majestic Southern Appalachians. SUMMARY:2024 Round Bald Rubus Roundup!
DESCRIPTION:Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy needs volunteers to help remove Canada Blackberry (Rubus canadensis) and other woody vegetation from Round Bald. \nVolunteers will help hand-mow and “lop” brushy areas (using weed-whackers and hand tools) to maintain globally rare\, grassy habitat atop Round Bald on Friday\, August 2nd (rain date TBD)\, meeting at Carver’s Gap at 9:30 am. \nThis is a great chance to learn about what SAHC does to manage these rare habitats\, without the commitment of a long hike in. In general\, we will be working within less than a 0.5 mile from the parking area. We encourage anyone who is new to conservation or to the Roan to join us for this event. \nVolunteers should bring water and lunch\, leather work gloves and eye protection. DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, July 27th\nTime: Starting at 10:00 AM\nWhere: Beaver Creek at South Yellow Mountain Preserve\nDistance: 1 mile\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\, uneven terrain with minor scrambling on slippery rocks\nCost: Free for Members\, $10 for non-members\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nExplore the pristine beauty of Beaver Creek in Mitchell County with a refreshing creek walk! Beginning at a small waterfall\, hikers will trace the meandering path of the creek northwards\, while encountering vibrant aquatic life and traversing picturesque boulder fields.  This excursion is not a normal hike as it involves some rock scrambling and steep slopes\, so please come prepared with sturdy closed-toe water shoes\, snacks\, plenty of water\, a change of clothes\, and trekking poles to navigate slippery surfaces. Plan to get a little wet! \nSAHC staff leading the hike will pause frequently to cool down in the cold mountain waters or to explore the nooks and crannies of the surrounding landscape. Along the way the group will learn about the importance of protecting clean water and have a chance to experience first hand what that looks like while navigating dense hemlock groves and flourishing riparian zones. These areas are shaded by majestic oak\, poplar\, hickory\, and deciduous magnolia trees\, providing a serene backdrop for the excursion. \nPlease join us for this challenging\, yet beautiful creek walk that promises a unique experience combining adventure with environmental education in the heart of Appalachia. \nDue to the nature of this off-trail excursion\, for safety reasons\, this hike will be limited to 10 participants.  A separate registration form must be completed for each participant.  \nIf you have any questions\, please reach out to justin@appalachian.org.

Join other volunteers as we work to maintain the globally rare grassy and shrub balds found on Grassy Ridge\, one of the most beautiful and ecologically significant sites in the Roan Highlands. We’ll cut invasive blackberries and other shrubs using weed whackers and brush cutters. Enjoy great company and great job satisfaction! Our annual Grassy Ridge Mow-Off is more than just a work day — it’s an incredible way to experience the Highlands of Roan and to share cherished moments with friends. \nBackpackers and day trippers are both welcome. \nThe hike to Grassy Ridge is about 2.5 miles one way\, the views are gorgeous\, and we have a job suited to almost everyone. There are several different ways to help: flagging rare plants\, cutting or raking blackberries\, camp organization\, taking photographs\, and more. \nDo you plan to join the group camp out on Grassy Ridge on Saturday\, July 20th? This hike will ascend from Roaring Creek Valley to the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and then return to SAHC’s Elk Hollow Preserve\, with a bit of bushwhacking. Participants will enjoy panoramic views from hidden balds and exploration of lesser-known SAHC preserves. Setting off from the Yellow Mountain Gap Trailhead at the terminus of Roaring Creek Road\, this rugged trek will follow the ridgeline along the Appalachian Trail to Little Hump Mountain\, continue to Big Yellow Mountain\, and culminate with a descent through SAHC-protected nature preserves. Arrive early and grab some coffee or a biscuit! Please park in the back at the request of the store manager. \nWe will drive from here into the Roan Mountain Important Bird Area\, traveling up through SAHC’s Yellow Mountain Connector Property\, 456 acres which joins North Carolina’s Yellow Mountain State Natural Area to create an unbroken swath of mature forest and rushing streams. As we drive\, we may hear forest interior birds like Scarlet Tanager\, Ovenbird\, Veery\, Black-throated Green and Blue Warblers\, and others. Turk’s Cap lily\, Black Cohosh\, and Purple Flowering Raspberry dot the roadsides.\n\nArriving at SAHC’s 336-acre Cane Creek Preserve and Life Estate\, which sits near 4500 feet in elevation\, we will spend time birding in the wildlife meadow\, looking for early successional species. Then we will hike about 0.5 mile through Montane Oak habitats looking for high elevation forest birds. We will have lunch in a second set of meadows and hike back to the car. DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, June 1st\nTime: 10:30am\nWhere: Snowball Mountain Trailhead\, off the Blue Ridge Parkway\nDistance: 3 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: $10 for non-members\, FREE for members\nJoin Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a hike to the protected Snowball Mountain. The first Saturday of June each year is Land Trust Day. On this day businesses and land trusts across North Carolina have come together to celebrate conservation. Land Trust Day highlights the important role that protected lands and the outdoors play in our communities. \nThis moderate 3-mile hike will take hikers along a high elevation ridge line with remarkable views. We will start out on the Mountains-to-Sea trail and split off to climb Snowball Mountain. Next\, we will continue North to Hawkbill Rock where we will look back onto the property and into the Woodfin Watershed— another SAHC-protected landmark. Hikers should be prepared for a short trip\, but steep elevation changes along the way. Snowball Mountain was one of the marquee parcels that pushed SAHC past the 50\,000-acre milestone mark at the end of 2011. \nCome and enjoy this beautiful property and learn about SAHC’s projects in this spectacular area of the Black Mountain range. In 2012\, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased 90 acres on Snowball Mountain in Buncombe County\, permanently preserving scenic views for recreational visitors\, clean water sources for area residents\, and habitat for native species. Nestled in the beautiful Craggy Mountains\, this tract is highly visible from the Blue Ridge Parkway and national forest land\, and it adjoins the publicly accessible Snowball Mountain Trail and Camp Sequoyah Trail. \nSAHC’s Snowball Mountain tract joins a significant swath of state and federal protected land\, contributing another piece to a vast network of over 125\,000 acres of contiguous protected forestlands. The race starts and finishes just blocks from downtown Asheville and then promptly takes runners on the winding roads of Town Mountain. Participants will enjoy shaded mountain roads typically only used by locals\, such as the beautiful Sunset Drive and Patton Mountain Road. One thing about The Flying Squirrel Ten Miler is sure: you’ve got to “earn” those views. Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy works with partners in the U.S. Forest Service and national park system to protect land for public enjoyment along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail\, the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail\, the Mountains-to-Sea Trail\, trails accessible off the Blue Ridge Parkway\, and many more. She spent a successful 30-year career as a biologist and senior executive in the federal government as the FWS Chief of Staff\, Assistant Director of Habitat Conservation/Head of Fisheries. \nDr. Parker made history serving as the first African American FWS Regional Director of the 13 Northeastern states after working in the Great Lakes and Big Rivers regions and in the southeastern United States. While serving as board chair of Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries Commission\, the board passed a diversity resolution that’s become a model for other states\, changed the board name from “game” to wildlife\, and protected migratory birds threatened by major bridge construction. Instead of “rubber-stamping” a project that would have displaced many birds (allowed under the weakening of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act)\, the Department drafted a  regulations to protect migratory birds across Virginia. This loop rolls over gentle hills through the Alexander/Leicester area with views of open farmland valleys and breathtaking vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The vision of Pathways to Parks is to motivate Americans of color to get outdoors and enjoy the benefits of nature in our national\, state and local parks and to help make it easy and accessible for them to do so. \nThe ride will begin at the SAHC Community Farm and then proceed to the historic Alexander Chapel Baptist Church\, site of a historic African American church and cemetery. Annette will share information about the history of the church and preservation efforts to care for the site.  Annette is one of the members of ASCORE – the Asheville Student Committee on Racial Equity – which desegregated public spaces in Asheville in the 1960s. \nThis ride will start and end at the SAHC Community Farm where afterward everyone will enjoy a catered lunch courtesy of Pathways to Parks. If you are not interested in the bike ride but are still interested in the event\, please still join us for lunch\, where we will have a remarks and presentation on the history of the Alexander Baptist Church. Everyone is invited to join us for lunch and fellowship after the ride\, starting at 12:30pm. \nThis ride is FREE and open to the public\, but some road cycling experience and proper safety equipment are recommended. Helmets are required\, and we recommend water bottles as well as a snack for emergency energy. You may want to consider bringing a spare tube and pump. Less experienced riders should feel comfortable on this route\, however\, riding in this region always involves some hill climbing and this route is no exception. There are three climbs with a 1-2% grade that will require low gears and moderate to high effort. We will be riding on rural roads with no bike lanes alongside some vehicle traffic. This 693-acre preserve offers an ideal habitat for a diverse range of bird species\, including the elusive Golden-winged Warbler. Participants will hike through mature northern hardwood forest along a trail following the babbling Price’s Creek. Midway along the trail – a spur trail leads up to a picturesque cascade where we will stop for a leisurely picnic lunch. \nNOTE: Due to limited parking availability\, we will be hard capping this hike at 12 participants. DESCRIPTION:Location: Meet at the Conference Center Parking Lot – Roan Mountain State Park in Roan Mountain\, TN\nDate: Friday\, April 26th\nStart time: 9:30 am\n  \nSAHC is partnering with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy\, Roan Mountain State Park\, and the Cherokee National Forest to remove invasive garlic mustard from the Park and heavily trafficked highways around Carver’s Gap and SAHC conservation properties in the Highlands of Roan. Plucking out the pesky invaders when they’re young and tender isn’t hard work\, but it does take a lot of hands! \nFood/Drinks: Please bring your own snacks\, lunch\, and bottled water. Lunch is not provided. Water and light snacks are available from the Conference Center vending machines. \nEquipment/Precautions: Work gloves and trash bags will be provided. Feel free to bring personal gloves or a trowel. Pulling garlic mustard is usually easy\, but a trowel can be helpful for compacted roadside soil and stubborn roots. \nYou will need: a hat and/or sunscreen\, long pants\, sturdy shoes\, lunch\, water\, a warm layer for high elevation hiking\, and rain gear. If you are allergic to poison ivy\, consider wearing long sleeves and pants as a precaution. \nIt may be difficult to return to your car while we are working\, so you may want a bag to keep your items with you throughout the day. Some work sites are very steep. Please let me know before the workday if you prefer to work on flatter terrain or have medical conditions. Join us on Thursday April 18 (1-3 pm) for a special Farm Education Workshop\, as Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy teams up with award-winning growers from The Utopian Seed Project at the SAHC Community Farm in Alexander\, NC. Learn about tropical perennials that thrive in the Appalachian mountains. You can grow tropical perennials as temperate zone annuals – reducing the impact of importing goods from far away AND creating a more diverse\, resilient food system in your local community. This workshop will be appropriate for multiple scales of production – for everyone from the home gardener to commercial operations. \n“Adapting growing techniques to the region creates a high level of climate resilience; it’s one of the best ways to respond to climate change\,” says SAHC Community Farm Manager Chris Link. “These varieties are selected for their ability to grow in our local environment\, and to withstand the fluctuations of weather extremes. Come to the workshop and learn how to adapt new food crops to our region for more resilient food systems that can handle the stress of a varying climate.” \nThe Utopian Seed Project is experimenting with open-field cultivation\, not greenhouse production\, so growing these crops is accessible to everyone. This special hike will begin in the parking area\, hike along crystal clear streams\, traverse mountainsides\, cross historic sites\, and ultimately hit the Appalachian Trail before returning to our starting point. These trails are all beautifully designed and crafted by the Rocky Fork Gorillas and members of the Friends of Rocky Fork. These members have also volunteered to lead the way through this wild landscape and highlight historic events. \nRocky Fork State Park is named after the cool waters that run down its center and is located along the Appalachian Trail corridor and the Tennessee-North Carolina border\, between Johnson City\, TN and Asheville\, NC.   The property is adjacent to more than 22\,000 acres of U.S. Forest Service-designated wilderness. Before Rocky Fork’s acquisition by The Conservation Fund and U.S. Forest Service\, it was one of the largest unprotected tracts in the southern Appalachian Mountains. From 2006-2012\, SAHC lobbied congress to secure funding to protect 10\,000 acres of the Rocky Fork watershed that was previously slated for development. With help from Senator Lamar Alexander and many other partners\, SAHC secured funding\, and the property was acquired from a timbering company. Come join us for this hike as we celebrate all that we’ve accomplished together! \n  \nThis hike is currently full.
