SUMMARY:2025 "For Love of Beer & Mountains" Bill Popper Memorial Wildflower Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, May 2nd\nTime: Starting at 10:30 AM\nWhere: Popper Tract\nDistance: 1.5 miles\nDifficulty: (4/10 difficulty) Easy To Moderate. A few stream-crossings\nCost: FREE\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nWe invite you to join us for a memorial hike to honor and remember our friend Bill Popper and his dedication to preserving the 573-acre Prices Creek Preserve in Yancey County that he loved so much. \nThis hike is a perennial favorite\, taking participants through our Price’s Creek Preserve where an astounding array of ephemeral wildflowers can be found this time of year\, including May Apples\, Blood Root\, Lark Spur\, and much more..  We will start at the entrance of the long gravel road that leads up to the property and hike through a primarily Northern Hardwood Forest ecosystem. Once we get off the gravel road\, we will cross into the property and make our way to a nice spot on Price’s Creek for lunch.  \nAs part of our “For Love of Beer & Mountains” partnership with Highland Brewing\, at the conclusion of the hike\, we will provide Highland’s newest seasonal release – Highland Cerveza Lime Lager – for participants to enjoy.  We also invite folks to join us at Highland’s Cinco de Mayo Cerveza Celebration on Monday\, May 5th! \nNOTE: Due to limited parking availability\, we will be hard capping this hike at 15 participants. Please register each party member individually to ensure we do not go over this number. \nWe will meet at a public parking area before carpooling to Price’s Creek Preserve. If you are willing to be a driver\, please let me know in the comments section of your registration. \nIf you would like to learn more about Bill Popper and his passion for this land that he loved\, please read our recent memorial here.  \nIf you have any questions please email Justin Tucker at justin@appalachian.org. \n

SUMMARY:2025 NCWF/SAHC Volunteer Work Day at Bowditch Bottoms
DESCRIPTION:Join the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a cleanup and invasive species removal at SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve in Yancey County. Originally protected as a conservation easement in 2020\, the landowners donated the land to SAHC in 2023. (With SAHC’s ownership of the land\, the conservation easement was assigned to our partners at Blue Ridge Conservancy.) Bowditch Bottoms contains mixed hardwood forest\, cleared agricultural fields\, valuable wetland habitat within the South Toe River Watershed\, and a riparian area that buffers over a half mile of Ayles Creek. \nWe will focus our invasive species removal effort on the wetland areas targeting autumn olive and multiflora rose. The significant length of natural stream and several wetland areas makes this property stand out as an opportunity for restoration projects (clean ups\, invasive species removal\, revegetation with native plants) that will directly benefit wildlife and multiple habitat types. Join us for an invasive species removal! \nThis is one of three partnership volunteer work days. Our partners at NC Wildlife Federation are organizing the volunteers for this work day event.

SUMMARY:2025 Spring Ephemerals - Lunch & Learn
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lunch & Learn: Spring Ephemeral Wildflowers\nDwarf larkspur (Delphinium tricorne) \nJoin Equinox Environmental’s Owen Carson for a Lunch & Learn about spring ephemeral wildflowers in Southern Appalachia. \nAppalachian Spring truly is a sight to behold! As winter relents\, life bursts forth from the thawed ground\, producing a dazzling display of colors\, shapes\, textures\, and tastes. This world-famous biodiversity (over 6\,000 plant species!) is the focus of many a spring pilgrimage to these mountains. \nIn keeping with tradition\, Owen Carson\, Botanist & Ecologist at Equinox Environmental\, will take us on a virtual plant pilgrimage with a focus on ephemeral and other spring wildflowers commonly seen in Appalachian forests. We will explore their unique biology and ecology\, learn about their preferred habitats\, and see how they are distributed across the landscape. The goal is for you to leave this session feeling more confident on how to recognize and identify native woodland wildflowers. \n\n  \nOwen Carson | Equinox Environmental\nBotanist and Ecologist \nBorn and raised in midtown Atlanta\, GA\, Owen was immersed early on in a world that was dichotomously urban and wild\, instilling a deep love for both environments. His interest in the natural world drove him to attend Brevard College\, where he earned his undergraduate in environmental science\, ecology\, and geology\, and where he fell in love with his wife\, Sarah. In 2010\, he started his career at Equinox as a field technician\, eventually earning the title of Botanist/Senior Ecologist. In his 15 years with Equinox\, Owen has explored the diverse landscapes of Southern Appalachia\, documenting flora and fauna\, protecting land and water\, and helping communities balance development and conservation. Outside of work\, he serves as the Chair of the Transylvania Natural Resources Council\, and as a member of the City of Brevard’s Public Works & Utilities Committee; in both positions Owen uses his knowledge and experience to help inform our community and plan for its sustainable future. At home he finds joy helping to raise 10-year old twins Liam and Hazel\, gardening with native plants\, coaching soccer\, fishing tenkara\, and cooking.\n

DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, June 14th\nTime: Starting at 9 am\nWhere: Bakersville\, NC\nDistance: 1.5 miles \nDifficulty: (5/10)\, 600 feet elevation gain in 0.6 miles\nLeaders: Park Greer\, South Yellow Mountain Preserve Manager\, Michelle Pugliese\, SAHC Land Protection Director\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nPlease complete your registration by June 11\, 2025\, at 9:00 PM.\nJoin us for the 2025 June Jamboree: Geology hike at Hawk Spur!\nJoin Park Greer\, SAHC’s South Yellow Mountain Preserve manager\, for a moderate hike exploring the geology of the Southern Appalachian mountains on SAHC’s Hawk Spur Preserve. This hike follows a soil road for 0.6 miles up to an overlook with an expansive view of some of the highest peaks in our region.  \nAll of the flora\, fauna\, waterfalls\, and views in the area are tied to and sometimes depend upon the underlying geology; this hike will offer a basic answer to the question: “Why is that there?” Along the way we will see many results of the forces that folded\, compressed\, and uplifted the basement rocks of the Appalachians to form the metamorphic rocks we see today. At a few sites the intrusive igneous rocks provide a stark contrast to the metamorphics\, not only in age but also in appearance and structure.  \nThis hike will be at a slower pace as we stop at several spots to investigate crystals and stone older than the evolution of trees. Please come prepared with sturdy footwear\, water\, snacks\, and questions about geology! \nWe hope participants will join us after this outing for the SAHC post-hike social at our Little Rock Creek Preserve. The distance from Hawk Spur to the Little Rock Creek Preserve is 12 miles (20 minute estimated drive time). \nThanks so much for your interest in this Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy outing—we’re excited to share the beauty and impact of conservation with you! \nIf you have any questions please email Alex Russell at alex@appalachian.org. \n

SUMMARY:2025 June Jamboree: Plant Inventory Walk at Little Rock Creek
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, June 14th\nTime: Starting at 10 am\nWhere: Little Rock Creek Preserve\nDistance: 2 miles\nDifficulty: (2/10)\, Easy\nLeaders: Gary Kauffman\, Retired Botanist/Ecologist at USDA-USFS\, Sarah Sheeran\, SAHC Stewardship Director\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nPlease complete your registration by June 11\, 2025\, at 9:00 PM.\nJoin us for the 2025 June Jamboree: Plant Inventory Walk at Little Rock Creek! \nExplore the botanical wonders of SAHC’s Little Rock Creek Preserve with retired USFS botanist and ecologist Gary Kauffman and SAHC Stewardship Director Sarah Sheeran. This relatively easy 2-mile walk will meander through the preserve as the hike leaders identify and point out different species of flora. This plant inventory can tell us if there are any rare species and if they are being threatened by invasives\, recreational impacts\, or climate change.  Knowing that about the populations in an area is important for protecting species and maintaining a healthy\, biodiverse ecosystem. Plan on a leisurely\, educational stroll!  \nThis walk is perfect for anyone curious about native plants\, local ecology\, or simply looking to enjoy a peaceful moment outdoors surrounded by natural beauty.  Afterwards\, we hope participants will stick around for the SAHC post-hike drop-in social at our Little Rock Creek Preserve. \nThank you for your interest in this Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy event—we look forward to sharing the natural beauty of this special place and the meaningful conservation work happening here! \nIf you have any questions please email Alex Russell at alex@appalachian.org. \n

SUMMARY:2025 June Jamboree: Drop-In Social at Little Rock Creek
DESCRIPTION:Drop-In Social at Little Rock Creek Preserve\nDate: 6/14/2024\nTime: 1-4 pm\nWhere: Little Rock Creek Preserve\nCost: FREE\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nFollowing the morning hikes and experiences\, participants are invited to stay for an afternoon drop-in social from 1 to 4 pm at SAHC’s Little Rock Creek Preserve. SAHC purchased the heart of the Little Rock Creek Preserve in 2020\, and an additional 57-acre adjoining property was donated as a preserve addition in 2023. The preserve is particularly unique in the Roan Highlands because in addition to healthy forest habitats\, it contains many seeps and wetland and floodplain habitats that are relatively rare in the mountains. A beautiful apple orchard\, once part of farm production in the 1940s\, now provides open habitat and a food source for a variety of wildlife and bird species.    \nDuring the June Jamboree Social\, SAHC staff will recognize the 2024 Stanley A. Murray Volunteer of the Year and share updates about our recent conservation work – including recently-protected Round Mountain and Richmond Hill tracts. \nWe invite everyone to join us in celebrating friends\, family\, and shared hike experiences. Drinks and light refreshments will be provided\, so please RSVP so we have enough for everyone! \n

SUMMARY:2025 NCWF/SAHC Volunteer Work Day at Bowditch Bottoms
DESCRIPTION:When: Friday\, June 20 from 9 am to 12 pm\nWhere: SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve in Yancey County\, NC\nJoin the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for volunteer work day and invasive plant species removal at SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve in Yancey County. \nOriginally protected as a conservation easement in 2020\, the landowners donated the land to SAHC in 2023. \nWe will focus our invasive plant species removal effort on the wetland areas\, targeting autumn olive and multiflora rose. The significant length of natural stream and several wetland areas makes this property stand out as an opportunity for restoration projects (clean ups\, invasive species removal\, revegetation with native plants) that will directly benefit wildlife and multiple habitat types. This is part of a long-term process to restore the land – which will also include planting native species in the stream corridor. We will be working on a management plan for the property over the next year. \nThis is one of a series of collaborative volunteer work days on SAHC-conserved land organized by our partners at NC Wildlife Federation.

SUMMARY:Mindful Morning Walk: Sandy Mush Game Lands
DESCRIPTION:Date: Sunday\, July 13\nTime: Starting at 10 am\nWhere: Sandy Mush Game Lands\nDistance: 2 miles (out and back)\nDifficulty: (4/10)\, Easy\nCost: Suggested $10 donation towards our conservation efforts is appreciated.\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nJoin us for the 2025 Sandy Mush Game Lands: Morning Meditative Hike \nStart your morning with intention on a meditative hike through the peaceful setting of the Sandy Mush Game Lands. This easy 2-mile out-and-back walk invites you to slow down\, breathe deeply\, and fully immerse yourself in the sights\, sounds\, and rhythms of nature. \nAlong the way\, we’ll engage in gentle mindfulness practices including focused breathing\, quiet observation\, and intentional pauses to reflect or journal. Binoculars are encouraged for those who want to take a closer look at birds and wildlife. You’re also welcome to bring a journal\, sketchbook\, or any tool that helps deepen your connection with the natural world. \nThis experience is perfect for anyone seeking a calm\, grounding start to the day or a deeper appreciation for the beauty of the Southern Appalachians. \nPlease note: This hike passes through pasture and wildlife habitat. Be prepared for the possibility of encountering ticks\, bees\, or snakes. \nThank you for your interest in this Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy event. We look forward to sharing this peaceful morning on the trail with you. \nA pre-hike email sent to registered participants prior to the day of the outing will include additional information such as the group meeting location. We estimate this outing experience to last approximately 3 hours. If you have any questions please email Alex Russell at alex@appalachian.org. \n \nSAHC’s involvement in conservation:\nThe Sandy Mush Game Lands consist of 2\,765 acres of land in Buncombe and Madison Counties\, owned by the State of NC and managed by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC). Sandy Mush Creek and Turkey Creek flow through it. \nIn 2004\, SAHC assisted the State of NC in the acquisition of the land\, once owned by CP&L/Progress Energy\, for conservation and public ownership. In 2011\, we acquired an 88-acre tract  because it formed a critical linking bridge and wildlife corridor between non-contiguous portions of the game lands — and in 2017 we transferred this tract to the state for inclusion in the Sandy Mush Game Lands. In 2023\, SAHC assisted our partners at NCWRC with the adding 67 acres to the Sandy Mush Game Lands on the Madison County side\, by providing a matching contribution which helped NCWRC secure grants from the NC Land and Water Fund and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Wildlife Restoration Program to make the acquisition possible.

SUMMARY:Rocky Fork State Park Hike – Snakeden Ridge Loop
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, July 18\nTime: Starting at 8:30 am\nWhere: Rocky Fork State Park\nDistance: 6.6 miles (Loop)\nDifficulty: (9/10)\, Strenuous\, Challenging\nCost: Suggested $10 donation towards our conservation efforts is appreciated.\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nJoin us for the Rocky Fork State Park Hike – Snakeden Ridge Loop \nJoin SAHC for a challenging and rewarding 6.6-mile loop through the scenic beauty of Tennessee’s Lamar Alexander Rocky Fork State Park. With approximately 1\,200 feet of elevation gain\, this hike is ideal for those seeking a vigorous adventure and stunning natural views. \nWe’ll start on the Flint Creek Trail\, following the stream through lush forests and peaceful hollows. The trail then curves to meet the Blockstand Creek Trail\, where a steady climb brings more significant elevation gain. Upon reaching Snakeden Ridge\, you’ll be treated to breathtaking mountain vistas and the chance to observe wildflowers\, wildlife\, and the diverse ecosystems that thrive in this special park. \nThe route includes portions of uneven and rocky terrain\, particularly along the ridge. It combines segments of the Rocky Fork Trail\, Flint Creek Trail\, and Blockstand Creek Trail to provide a varied and immersive experience that highlights the best of Rocky Fork State Park. \n\nInteresting tidbit: The name “Snakeden Ridge” refers to snake dens allegedly found along its lower reaches. Snake dens are common at mid-level elevations in this section of the park\, according to folklore. The Cherokee word for snake is “inada”.\n\nRegistered participants will receive a pre-hike email with additional information the week of the outing. We estimate this outing to last approximately 5.5 hours. If you have any questions please email Alex Russell at alex@appalachian.org. \n \nSAHC’s involvement in conservation:\nThe 10\,000-acre Rocky Fork watershed is comprised of the 2\,076-acre Lamar Alexander Rocky Fork State Park and approximately 8\,000 adjoining acres owned by the U.S. Forest Service and part of Cherokee National Forest. \nSAHC worked from 2006-2012 to protect this iconic area\, in partnership with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy\, The Conservation Fund\, the State of Tennessee\, the U.S. Forest Service\, and other public and private partners. The Tennessee Heritage Conservation Trust Fund provided $6 million for the State of Tennessee to acquire the land for the Park\, which was officially designated Tennessee’s 55th State Park in October 2012. A section of the Appalachian Trail crosses the southwest corner of the massive Rocky Fork conservation project area\, approximately a half mile from the state park. \nRead more HERE >>

SUMMARY:2025 NCWF/SAHC Volunteer Work Day at Bowditch Bottoms
DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, August 21 from 9 am to 12 pm\nWhere: SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve in Yancey County\, NC\nJoin the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for volunteer work day and invasive plant species removal at SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve in Yancey County. \nOriginally protected as a conservation easement in 2020\, the landowners donated the land to SAHC in 2023. \nWe will focus our workday along the creek targeting Japanese knotweed.
