SUMMARY:Blackrock Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Time: 10:00 am\nWhere: Blackrock Mountain Hike\nDifficulty: Strenuous (8/10)\nCost: Free for SAHC Members\, $10 for non-members (Pre-Registration is Required!)\nJoin Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a guided 6 mile out and back hike along the Blackrock Ridge trail out to the Blackrock Mountain summit. This trail is rugged and traverses technical terrain through open meadows and thick fir forest. This hike will be mostly shaded through the forest and we will see numerous rock outcrops with great views of Thunderstruck ridge and surrounding mountains. \nBlackrock Mountain in the Plott Balsam Mountains is part of a network of conservation lands in progress of being added to an expansion of national park land at Waterrock Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway. In 2013\, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased the summit of Blackrock Mountain\, with more than 250 surrounding acres. The property adjoins other conservation lands: SAHC’s 60-acre Blackrock Ridge tract (protected in 2010)\, the Sylva Watershed (protected with a conservation easement held by Mainspring Conservation Trust)\, and The Nature Conservancy’s Plott-Balsam Preserve. SAHC’s conservation work in this area protects high elevation habitat and pristine headwater streams. \nThis hike is in partnership with Highland Brewing Company to celebrate the return of their Thunderstruck Coffee Porter – as part of their Thirst for Good and SAHC’s ‘For Love of Beer and Mountains’ partnerships. Hike through the beautiful mountains that inspired its namesake\, then finish with a celebratory cheers and a view worth raising a drink to. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Fill Out Form Below to Sign Up\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Participant Contact InformationHiker Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Address(Required) \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n Address Line 2\n \n \n City\n \n \n State\n AlabamaAlaskaAmerican SamoaArizonaArkansasCaliforniaColoradoConnecticutDelawareDistrict of ColumbiaFloridaGeorgiaGuamHawaiiIdahoIllinoisIndianaIowaKansasKentuckyLouisianaMaineMarylandMassachusettsMichiganMinnesotaMississippiMissouriMontanaNebraskaNevadaNew HampshireNew JerseyNew MexicoNew YorkNorth CarolinaNorth DakotaNorthern Mariana IslandsOhioOklahomaOregonPennsylvaniaPuerto RicoRhode IslandSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennesseeTexasUtahU.S. Virgin IslandsVermontVirginiaWashingtonWest VirginiaWisconsinWyomingArmed Forces AmericasArmed Forces EuropeArmed Forces Pacific\n \n ZIP Code\n \n \n \n Hiker Email Address(Required)\n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n \n Phone(Required)Emergency Contact and Safety InformationPlease provide contact info for a person who is not accompanying you\, in case of an emergency.Emergency Contact Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Emergency Contact Phone(Required)Are you over 18 years old?(Required)\n \n \n Yes\n \n \n \n No\n Parent Signature Required(Required)Please list first and last names\, separated by commasDo you have any allergies\, dietary restrictions\, or health conditions that we should be aware of?(Required)\n \n \n Yes\n \n \n \n No\n Allergies\, dietary restrictions\, etc.(Required) Add Remove\n Submit \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

SUMMARY:2026 October Bowditch Bottoms Wetland Planting Volunteer Work Day (Burnsville)
DESCRIPTION:Join the North Carolina Wildlife Federation\, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy\, and Wildbud Natives for a wetland planting workday at Bowditch Bottoms in Yancey County on Monday\, October 12th! Bowditch Bottoms is a 87-acre property that contains important soils\, farmland\, undeveloped forested and non-forested habitat for wildlife\, headwaters to the South Toe River\, and intact wetland and riparian corridors. It is visible from the Mount Mitchell Scenic Byway and several higher-elevation vantage points in the Black Mountains and the Highlands of the Roan. \n \nNCWF\, SAHC\, conservation professionals alongside volunteers have worked together at Bowditch Bottoms to restore habitat\, increase biodiversity\, and serve as a model for active stewardship. Together on the property through multiple workdays we have removed Helene debris\, controlled non-native invasive plant species\, hosted a hands-on forestry workshop with EcoForesters\, planted over a thousand livestakes\, and engaged the local community with a grassroots conservation project. \nJoin us to continue the work! During this workday\, we’ll be planting over 2 thousand wetland species including swamp milkweed\, pale jewelweed\, bushy bluestem\, and more. Bring some snacks and we’ll see you there! \nRegistration required below. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:SAHC's Elk Hollow Preserve Hike
DESCRIPTION:Where: SAHC’s Elk Hollow Preserve in the Roan Highlands\nDistance: 1.4 miles \nDifficulty: Moderately Strenuous (6/10)\, several steep inclines and some slick surfaces.\nCost: Free for SAHC Members\, $10 for non-members\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nJoin SAHC for a beautiful fall hike at our Elk Hollow Preserve! This moderate one-and-a-half-mile scenic route will guide you through stunning forests of oaks\, maples\, and beech trees. The trail will wander beside Elk Hollow Branch and pass some vibrant meadows perfect for birdwatching. SAHC’s Elk Hollow Preserve is home to a variety of rare wildlife\, such as Golden-winged Warblers\, Southern Appalachian brook trout\, and Gray’s lilies. Thanks to generous conservation supporters\, SAHC has made some improvements at the site to help people connect with nature – including a well-maintained trail system\, a tent camping platform\, and a moldering privy. \nThis hike will take place during hunting season\, so bright colored/blaze orange clothes and hats are strongly recommended. \nSAHC’s Elk Hollow Preserve is located up the Roaring Creek area in Newland\, NC – about 1.5 hours north of Asheville\, NC\, and an hour from Johnson City\, TN. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Fill Out Form Below to Sign Up\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Participant Contact InformationHiker Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Address(Required) \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n Address Line 2\n \n \n City\n \n \n State\n AlabamaAlaskaAmerican SamoaArizonaArkansasCaliforniaColoradoConnecticutDelawareDistrict of ColumbiaFloridaGeorgiaGuamHawaiiIdahoIllinoisIndianaIowaKansasKentuckyLouisianaMaineMarylandMassachusettsMichiganMinnesotaMississippiMissouriMontanaNebraskaNevadaNew HampshireNew JerseyNew MexicoNew YorkNorth CarolinaNorth DakotaNorthern Mariana IslandsOhioOklahomaOregonPennsylvaniaPuerto RicoRhode IslandSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennesseeTexasUtahU.S. Virgin IslandsVermontVirginiaWashingtonWest VirginiaWisconsinWyomingArmed Forces AmericasArmed Forces EuropeArmed Forces Pacific\n \n ZIP Code\n \n \n \n Hiker Email Address(Required)\n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n \n Phone(Required)Emergency Contact and Safety InformationPlease provide contact info for a person who is not accompanying you\, in case of an emergency.Emergency Contact Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Emergency Contact Phone(Required)Are you over 18 years old?(Required)\n \n \n Yes\n \n \n \n No\n Parent Signature Required(Required)Please list first and last names\, separated by commasDo you have any allergies\, dietary restrictions\, or health conditions that we should be aware of?(Required)\n \n \n Yes\n \n \n \n No\n Allergies\, dietary restrictions\, etc.(Required) Add Remove\n Submit \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ
