SUMMARY:SAHC's Elk Hollow Preserve Hike
DESCRIPTION:Where: SAHC’s Elk Hollow Preserve in the Roan Highlands\nDistance: 1.4 miles \nDifficulty: Moderately Strenuous (6/10)\, several steep inclines and some slick surfaces.\nCost: Free for SAHC Members\, $10 for non-members\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\nJoin SAHC for a beautiful fall hike at our Elk Hollow Preserve! This moderate one-and-a-half-mile scenic route will guide you through stunning forests of oaks\, maples\, and beech trees. The trail will wander beside Elk Hollow Branch and pass some vibrant meadows perfect for birdwatching. SAHC’s Elk Hollow Preserve is home to a variety of rare wildlife\, such as Golden-winged Warblers\, Southern Appalachian brook trout\, and Gray’s lilies. Thanks to generous conservation supporters\, SAHC has made some improvements at the site to help people connect with nature – including a well-maintained trail system\, a tent camping platform\, and a moldering privy. \nThis hike will take place during hunting season\, so bright colored/blaze orange clothes and hats are strongly recommended. \nSAHC’s Elk Hollow Preserve is located up the Roaring Creek area in Newland\, NC – about 1.5 hours north of Asheville\, NC\, and an hour from Johnson City\, TN. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Fill Out Form Below to Sign Up\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n Participant Contact InformationHiker Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Address(Required) \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n Address Line 2\n \n \n City\n \n \n State\n AlabamaAlaskaAmerican SamoaArizonaArkansasCaliforniaColoradoConnecticutDelawareDistrict of ColumbiaFloridaGeorgiaGuamHawaiiIdahoIllinoisIndianaIowaKansasKentuckyLouisianaMaineMarylandMassachusettsMichiganMinnesotaMississippiMissouriMontanaNebraskaNevadaNew HampshireNew JerseyNew MexicoNew YorkNorth CarolinaNorth DakotaNorthern Mariana IslandsOhioOklahomaOregonPennsylvaniaPuerto RicoRhode IslandSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennesseeTexasUtahU.S. Virgin IslandsVermontVirginiaWashingtonWest VirginiaWisconsinWyomingArmed Forces AmericasArmed Forces EuropeArmed Forces Pacific\n \n ZIP Code\n \n \n \n Hiker Email Address(Required)\n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n \n Phone(Required)Emergency Contact and Safety InformationPlease provide contact info for a person who is not accompanying you\, in case of an emergency.Emergency Contact Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Emergency Contact Phone(Required)Are you over 18 years old?(Required)\n \n \n Yes\n \n \n \n No\n Parent Signature Required(Required)Please list first and last names\, separated by commasDo you have any allergies\, dietary restrictions\, or health conditions that we should be aware of?(Required)\n \n \n Yes\n \n \n \n No\n Allergies\, dietary restrictions\, etc.(Required) Add Remove\n Submit \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

SUMMARY:2026 October Bowditch Bottoms Wetland Planting Volunteer Work Day (Burnsville)
DESCRIPTION:Join the North Carolina Wildlife Federation\, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy\, and Wildbud Natives for a wetland planting workday at Bowditch Bottoms in Yancey County on Monday\, October 12th! Bowditch Bottoms is a 87-acre property that contains important soils\, farmland\, undeveloped forested and non-forested habitat for wildlife\, headwaters to the South Toe River\, and intact wetland and riparian corridors. It is visible from the Mount Mitchell Scenic Byway and several higher-elevation vantage points in the Black Mountains and the Highlands of the Roan. \n \nNCWF\, SAHC\, conservation professionals alongside volunteers have worked together at Bowditch Bottoms to restore habitat\, increase biodiversity\, and serve as a model for active stewardship. Together on the property through multiple workdays we have removed Helene debris\, controlled non-native invasive plant species\, hosted a hands-on forestry workshop with EcoForesters\, planted over a thousand livestakes\, and engaged the local community with a grassroots conservation project. \nJoin us to continue the work! During this workday\, we’ll be planting over 2 thousand wetland species including swamp milkweed\, pale jewelweed\, bushy bluestem\, and more. Bring some snacks and we’ll see you there! \nRegistration required below. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:Blackrock Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Time: 10:00 am\nWhere: Blackrock Mountain Hike\nDifficulty: Strenuous (8/10)\nCost: Free for SAHC Members\, $10 for non-members (Pre-Registration is Required!)\nJoin Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a guided 6 mile out and back hike along the Blackrock Ridge trail out to the Blackrock Mountain summit. This trail is rugged and traverses technical terrain through open meadows and thick fir forest. This hike will be mostly shaded through the forest and we will see numerous rock outcrops with great views of Thunderstruck ridge and surrounding mountains. \nBlackrock Mountain in the Plott Balsam Mountains is part of a network of conservation lands in progress of being added to an expansion of national park land at Waterrock Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway. In 2013\, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased the summit of Blackrock Mountain\, with more than 250 surrounding acres. The property adjoins other conservation lands: SAHC’s 60-acre Blackrock Ridge tract (protected in 2010)\, the Sylva Watershed (protected with a conservation easement held by Mainspring Conservation Trust)\, and The Nature Conservancy’s Plott-Balsam Preserve. SAHC’s conservation work in this area protects high elevation habitat and pristine headwater streams. \nThis hike is in partnership with Highland Brewing Company to celebrate the return of their Thunderstruck Coffee Porter – as part of their Thirst for Good and SAHC’s ‘For Love of Beer and Mountains’ partnerships. Hike through the beautiful mountains that inspired its namesake\, then finish with a celebratory cheers and a view worth raising a drink to. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Fill Out Form Below to Sign Up\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Participant Contact InformationHiker Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Address(Required) \n \n \n Street Address\n \n \n Address Line 2\n \n \n City\n \n \n State\n AlabamaAlaskaAmerican SamoaArizonaArkansasCaliforniaColoradoConnecticutDelawareDistrict of ColumbiaFloridaGeorgiaGuamHawaiiIdahoIllinoisIndianaIowaKansasKentuckyLouisianaMaineMarylandMassachusettsMichiganMinnesotaMississippiMissouriMontanaNebraskaNevadaNew HampshireNew JerseyNew MexicoNew YorkNorth CarolinaNorth DakotaNorthern Mariana IslandsOhioOklahomaOregonPennsylvaniaPuerto RicoRhode IslandSouth CarolinaSouth DakotaTennesseeTexasUtahU.S. Virgin IslandsVermontVirginiaWashingtonWest VirginiaWisconsinWyomingArmed Forces AmericasArmed Forces EuropeArmed Forces Pacific\n \n ZIP Code\n \n \n \n Hiker Email Address(Required)\n \n Enter Email\n \n \n \n Confirm Email\n \n \n \n Phone(Required)Emergency Contact and Safety InformationPlease provide contact info for a person who is not accompanying you\, in case of an emergency.Emergency Contact Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Emergency Contact Phone(Required)Are you over 18 years old?(Required)\n \n \n Yes\n \n \n \n No\n Parent Signature Required(Required)Please list first and last names\, separated by commasDo you have any allergies\, dietary restrictions\, or health conditions that we should be aware of?(Required)\n \n \n Yes\n \n \n \n No\n Allergies\, dietary restrictions\, etc.(Required) Add Remove\n Submit \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Δ

SUMMARY:2026 September Strawberry Gap Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, September 4th\nTime: 10:30 am\nWhere: Strawberry Gap to Blue Ridge Pastures\nDistance: 6 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: FREE (Pre-Registration is Required!)\n  \nJoin Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a guided hike to Blue Ridge Pastures via the Strawberry Gap Trail! This hike will be a moderately strenuous 6 mile out-and-back through a beautiful forest while taking in sweeping views of Fairview\, NC before arriving at the remote Blue Ridge Pastures. \nStrawberry Gap is in the stunning Upper Hickory Nut Gorge trail network and climbs upward for three miles through beautiful\, boulder-strewn forests. About halfway up\, a rock outcrop offers sweeping views over a picturesque valley and range upon range of distant\, blue mountains. The climax of this trail is Blue Ridge Pastures\, where the forests give way to a ridgeline pasture\, revealing dramatic views of the Hickory Nut Gorge\, Bearwallow Mountain\, Little Pisgah Mountain\, and in the distance the highest mountains in the eastern United States.  \nThis trail is made possible through a partnership between two local land trusts–Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) and Conserving Carolina. SAHC owns Strawberry Gap Preserve and worked with multiple private landowners to protect this beautiful mountain land with conservation easements. Conserving Carolina then built the trail\, which connects to Trombatore Trail at Blue Ridge Pastures. This brings us to more than 16 miles of connected trails in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge. \n*Please note that Strawberry Gap passes through privately owned land and dogs are not allowed on this trail.  \n  \nRegister Here!\nOops! SUMMARY:2026 March Rough Creek Watershed Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, March 28th\nTime: 10:00 am\nWhere: Rough Creek Watershed\nDistance: 5 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants (Pre-Registration is Required!)\n  \nWe’re hitting the trails to celebrate Highland Brewing Company’s seasonal Saint T’s Pale Ale by hiking the Rough Creek Watershed’s inner loop trail! Participants will hike a moderately strenuous 5 mile loop through a beautiful forest with a near pristine ecosystem. Our hike will consist of about 1\,000 ft of elevation gain\, most within the first two miles. This watershed contains nearly 7 miles of streams\, numerous seeps\, springs\, & swamp/bog areas which have become fairly uncommon with human inhabitants of the region. It also is home to many species of interesting & rare plants (painted trillium\, whorled pogonia) as well as a large & diverse animal population (salamanders\, turkey\, bear\, bobcats\, songbirds). For those interested\, the hike will be followed by celebrating with a Saint T’s Pale Ale. \nThe Rough Creek Watershed property\, located at 265 Rough Water Pt.\, consists of over 870 acres of beautiful & majestic land\, owned by the Town of Canton.  This property is located on the South side of the Newfound Mountain Range\, approximately 5 miles north of Canton in Western North Carolina. The Rough Creek Watershed Trail System is comprised of 3 trails of various distances\, totaling 10+ miles. \nIn 2002\, with the help of the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy\, a partnership was created between the Town of Canton & the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund. This relationship has led to the establishment of a conservation easement throughout the Rough Creek property\, ensuring the protection of its unique forest ecosystem & natural resources. \nThis hike is a part of SAHC’s “For Love of Beer and Mountains” corporate partnership with Highland Brewing Company and is a part of Highland’s “Thirst for Good” partnership.  Highland donates a portion of sales of seasonal releases during the “release party” at the Tasting Room in Asheville to support SAHC’s land and water conservation efforts\, and we lead guided hikes for folks to experience and enjoy the natural landscapes for which these seasonal brews are named and beyond. \n*Please note that dogs are not allowed on these trails.  \nCost – FREE for all participants\, (Pre-Registration is Required Below!)\nOops! SUMMARY:2026 Lunch and Learn - Mapping the Mountains
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lunch & Learn – Mapping the Mountains: Surveying & Technology in Land Conservation\nWednesday\, March 25 at 12:00 pm EST\nJoin Park Greer\, SAHC’s South Yellow Mountain Preserve Manager for a virtual Lunch & Learn exploring the intersection of land conservation\, land surveying\, and other measurement and monitoring technologies. Before Park joined the SAHC team he worked in land surveying specializing in stream restoration and is excited to share how historical and modern mapping technologies help conservationists better understand\, protect\, and steward the landscapes of the Southern Appalachian mountains. \nMany of these tools and practices are unfamiliar to most even though they impact our daily lives. Understanding the distinction between these tools\, their limitations\, and their uses helps land owners and land protectors to care for the world around them. From the history of surveying to interpreting and defining property boundaries to analyzing forest health and habitat connectivity\, these tools play a critical role in preserving farmland\, forests\, and mountain views for future generations. \nClick HERE to Register

SUMMARY:2026 Farm Workshop: Planning & Design - Climate Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Farm Planning & Design: Climate Resilience\nWhen: Thursday\, March 19\, 1 – 4 pm\nWhere: SAHC Community Farm\, 180 Mag Sluder Road Alexander\, NC 28701\n\nAre you looking for the perfect farm property but not sure how to create the best plan for your land? Join us for an introduction to planning and layout of land for small-scale farming with a focus on climate-resilient design. \nOur case study for this process will be a property just around the corner from the SAHC Community Farm in Alexander. We will have a virtual “walk through” site analysis of the property’s conditions using a number of land planning tools\, with a Permaculture approach. We will inventory conditions such as soils\, water\, wind\, aspect and more to create a multi-layered map of the site as a base for decision making. Using this information\, we will actively draw up together a concept for the site\, which addresses some of the needs and challenges identified in the analysis phase.  Through this design process we will cover how to avoid making a $10\,000 “bad decision” when beginning with infrastructure improvements. \nThis workshop will be particularly appropriate for participants who already own or lease land\, as well as those who plan to do so in the future. Our focus will be on growers and how best to make design decisions for resiliency. \n\n  \nPre-registration is required. Farm workshop fee is $20; no one turned away for inability to pay. \nFor questions\, contact SAHC Community Farm Manager Chris Link\, chris@appalachian.org. \nRegistration for this workshop has now closed.\n  \n\n  \n\n  \nSAHC Community Farm work is funded in part by grants from The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina\, a grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program (under grant award number 2021-70033-35717)\, and a cost-share grant from USDA Natural Resources Conservati

SUMMARY:Livestake Planting Work Day with NCWF\, at Bowditch Bottoms Preserve
DESCRIPTION:What: Livestake Volunteer Planting Workday\nWhere: SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve\, near Burnsville\, NC\nWhen: Friday\, March 6 from 9 am to 12 pm\nJoin the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a livestaking workday at SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms in Yancey County. \nBowditch Bottoms contains a mosaic of habitat types including mixed hardwood forest\, open field\, natural wetland\, and a riparian area that buffers over a half mile of Ayles Creek within the South Toe River Watershed. \nLivestaking is a restoration technique where dormant stem cuttings from trees and shrubs are planted directly into the ground. These cuttings root and grow into new plants. Join us as we plant livestakes along Ayles Creek in areas left bare and susceptible to invasive plant species following Helene. We will plant a variety of native species including ninebark\, silky willow\, elderberry\, and more in an effort to control erosion and enhance habitat for both terrestrial and aquatic wildlife. \nThis work day is a continuation of our partnership with NCWF; we joined together in managing invasive plants species through a series of volunteer work days on this preserves in 2025. Please help us continue the momentum as we repair and restore the stream corridor! \nThis event is free and open to the public.  \nClick HERE to Register

SUMMARY:Winter Hiking Challenge Strawberry Gap Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, February 28th\nTime: 11:00 am\nWhere: Strawberry Gap to Blue Ridge Pastures\nDistance: 6 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants (Pre-Registration is Required!)\n  \nFinish the Winter Hiking Challenge strong and in community by joining Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a guided hike to Blue Ridge Pastures via the Strawberry Gap Trail! \nThis hike is only for participants registered for the 2026 Winter Hiking Challenge. \nWe will hike a moderately strenuous 6 mile out-and-back through a beautiful forest while taking in sweeping views of Fairview\, NC before arriving at the remote Blue Ridge Pastures. \nRegister Below!\n\n \n Contact InfoYour Name(Required)\n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n Your Email Address(Required)\n \n Email Address\n \n \n \n Confirm Email Address\n \n \n \n Your Phone(Required)Property InformationProperty Acreage(Required)What is the total acreage for the property you are interested in protecting?Property Location(Required)Please provide the COUNTY where the property is located. This hike will be about 2 miles in length. \nThis newly protected preserve consists of a beautiful cove and mixed forest\, an open 17-acre pasture with stunning views of the Black Mountains\, and lovely sections of Bull Creek with rocky streambanks and wading pools. A tributary of the Swannanoa River\, Bull Creek originates in the Black Mountains just south of Rattlesnake Lodge and the Blue Ridge Parkway\, draining an area of more than 10 square miles. Approximately 3 miles of single track hiking and biking trails traverse the property in an existing trail system. \nSAHC owns this land for the long-term and remains in deep partnership with Warren Wilson College\, who continues to use the property for education and land management training. \nIf you have any questions about this hike\, please email Erin Goodpaster at erin@appalachian.org \nAfter registering\, you’ll receive directions\, meeting instructions\, and other important details a couple days prior to the event date. It’s crucial to note that a significant portion of the hike may not be disability accessible. \nPlease Register Below\nOops! We could not locate your form.
