SUMMARY:2026 Lunch and Learn - Recovery in Motion
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lunch & Learn – Recovery in Motion: A Follow-Up Discussion\nFriday\, January 30 at 12:00 pm EST\nOver one year ago\, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy convened two panels of experts in the conservation\, stewardship\, and forestry management fields on how their organizations and agencies were approaching recovery from Tropical Storm Helene. Find the recordings of those two panel discussions on our YouTube Channel: Part I\, Part II. \nThis follow-up Lunch & Learn brings together representatives from the US Forest Service\, NC Forest Service\, NC Wildlife Resources Commission\, EcoForesters\, and Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a discussion on how the past year of recovery has unfolded. Panelists will share key accomplishments\, ongoing challenges\, and how Helene has influenced priorities\, management strategies\, and collaboration across public and private lands. Each speaker will offer brief reflections followed by a moderated Q&A. Please submit questions with your registration in advance of the Lunch & Learn. A recording of this panel will be made available after its conclusion on our YouTube Channel. If you are unable to join the live Lunch & Learn\, we encourage you to still register and submit your questions; the recording will be emailed to all registrants within a few days of the event along with links to resources and programs discussed. \n\n  \nPanelists:\nJennifer Barnhart\nJennifer is the District Ranger of the Appalachian Ranger District for the US Forest Service. Barnhart has been in the role since 2020 and was previously a District Ranger on the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire and Maine. Barnhart has a bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Recreation with a minor in Forestry from Virginia Tech University and a master’s degree in Natural Resources and Science Management from the University of Minnesota. She has a diverse background of over twenty years of experience in integrated natural resources\, public service\, and land management. Her positions have varied beyond working for the Forest Service with non-profit conservation organizations\, universities\, and land management state agencies. Barnhart has also worked as an Acting District Ranger and a District Recreation Program Manager on the Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests in South Carolina and as a District Recreation Program Manager on the Kisatchie National Forest in Louisiana. \nMichael Cheek\nMichael is the Region 3 Forester and Mountain Division Director for the NC Forest Service. The NC Forest Service’s primary purpose is to ensure adequate and quality forest resources for the state to meet its present and future needs. NC Forest Service is a government agency responsible for providing land management assistance to private landowners. \nMarquette Crockett\nMarquette is the Roan Stewardship Director at Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy. Marquette joined SAHC in 2014. She grew up on a family farm near Cumberland Gap\, TN\, where she learned to love nature by following her grandmother through the fields and forests. Marquette earned her BS in Biology from Lincoln Memorial University and her MS in Biological Science from East Tennessee State University. Before joining SAHC\, she worked for more than 10 years as a Wildlife Biologist\, including managing high elevation spruce-fir\, open areas\, and wetlands in Canaan Valley NWR in West Virginia. Marquette facilitates SAHC’s Roan Stewardship Program and serves as the primary land steward on SAHC-owned preserves in the Roan. \nLang Hornthal\nLang is the Co-Director of EcoForesters\, a non-profit professional forestry organization dedicated to conserving and restoring our Appalachian forests through education and stewardship. A passionate advocate for forest stewardship\, Lang can be found collaborating with partners and seeking opportunities that will help forests be more resilient in the future. He likes to spend his free time with family and friends outside and can usually be found listening to music or watching the Red Sox. \nSarah Sheeran\nSarah is the Stewardship Director at Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy. Sarah joined SAHC’s Stewardship staff in 2014\, but has served on the Land Management Committee since 2010 and has been a long-time volunteer. As Stewardship Director\, she oversees the organization’s program of monitoring and managing our conservation easements and properties we own\, manages SAHC-owned land outside of the Roan Highlands and assists landowners with caring for their property’s natural resources. \nSarah previously received her BS in Biology from James Madison University and her MS in Ecology from UNC-Chapel Hill. The last property we will come across\, which we will be celebrating one year of protecting\, is the 407 acre White Oak Mountain tract on the eastern edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). Protection of this property and others buffering the park provides exceptional habitat for a variety of plant and animal species in an important corridor for wildlife movement\, scenic views from the Appalachian Trail\, and water quality in headwater tributaries of the Pigeon River watershed. \nNo dogs are allowed on this hike. \nAfter registering\, you’ll receive directions\, meeting instructions\, and other important details a couple days prior to the event date. \nIf you have any questions please email SAHC Outreach Program Manager Erin Goodpaster at erin@appalachian.org \nREGISTER HERE

This event is free to attend\, but registration is required so that we can plan for the day\, including lunch.\n\n\n\nFill Out Form to Register to Attend Fire Safety and Land Management Workshop\n\n\nAbout the Presenting Partners:\n\n\nMountain Valleys RC&D\nMountain Valleys RC&D (Resource Conservation and Development) is a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable stewardship of forest resources that operates in eight counties in Western North Carolina\, inlcuding Buncombe County.  Communities near forests or other undeveloped areas are vulnerable to wildfires because they’re essentially surrounded by fuel.  Prescribed burning is a useful technique for managing forests\, however\, there are also many proactive steps that a community or individual homeowner can take to reduce the risk of loss; such as fuel reduction around the home\, maintaining clear gutters\, and fire resistant construction.  Mountain Valleys RC&D works with communities and governmental/private organizations to educate homeowners on how to best protect their property. \n  \nCommunity Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP)\nCarolina Land and Lakes was awarded the USDA Community Wildfire Defense Grant (CWDG) in FY22 and FY23 to update and create Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP) in 27 Counties in NC and for the Qualla Boundary of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. These counties are considered to have a High to Very High Wildfire Potential\, are Low Income and have experienced a natural disaster which has increased their wildfire risk. The CWPPs are developed at the fire district level to identify available resources and possible community actions to reduce fuels and structural ignitability. \nPiedmont Prescribed Burn Association\nWe are a community-based organization dedicated to increasing access to prescribed fire on lands in the Piedmont of North Carolina. The Piedmont Prescribed Burn Association welcomes individuals who are passionate about supporting conservation initiatives\, including private landowners\, natural resource professionals\, students\, and the general public. Together\, we strive to foster a collaborative environment to promote the responsible use of prescribed fire for the benefit of our local landscape.

SUMMARY:2025 NCWF/SAHC Volunteer Work Day at Bowditch Bottoms
DESCRIPTION:When: Friday\, September 26 from 9 am to 12 pm\nWhere: SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve in Yancey County\, NC\nJoin the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for volunteer work day and invasive plant species removal at SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve in Yancey County. \nOriginally protected as a conservation easement in 2020\, the landowners donated the land to SAHC in 2023. (With SAHC’s ownership of the land\, the conservation easement was assigned to our partners at Blue Ridge Conservancy.) Bowditch Bottoms contains mixed hardwood forest\, cleared agricultural fields\, valuable wetland habitat within the South Toe River Watershed\, and a riparian area that buffers over a half mile of Ayles Creek. \nWe will focus our workday along the creek targeting Japanese knotweed. The significant length of natural stream and several wetland areas makes this property stand out as an opportunity for restoration projects (clean ups\, invasive species removal\, revegetation with native plants) that will directly benefit wildlife and multiple habitat types. This is part of a long-term process to restore the land – which will also include planting native species in the stream corridor. We will be working on a management plan for the property over the next year. \nThis is one of a series of collaborative volunteer work days on SAHC-conserved land organized by our partners at NC Wildlife Federation.\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:2025 Clawtoberfest Hike - Strawberry Gap Trail
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, September 20th\nTime: 10:00 am\nWhere: Strawberry Gap to Blue Ridge Pastures\nDistance: 6 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants (Pre-Registration is Required!)\n  \nKick-off Clawtoberfest with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy by joining us for a guided hike for Highland Brewing Company’s “Thirst for Good” partnership!  We’re hitting the trails to celebrate Highland Brewing Company’s seasonal Clawhammer Oktoberfest Lager by hiking to Blue Ridge Pastures via the Strawberry Gap Trail. Participants will hike a moderately strenuous 6 mile out-and-back through a beautiful forest while taking in sweeping views of Fairview\, NC before arriving at the remote Blue Ridge Pastures. \nStrawberry Gap is in the stunning Upper Hickory Nut Gorge trail network and climbs upward for three miles through beautiful\, boulder-strewn forests. About halfway up\, a rock outcrop offers sweeping views over a picturesque valley and range upon range of distant\, blue mountains. The climax of this trail is Blue Ridge Pastures\, where the forests give way to a ridgeline pasture\, revealing dramatic views of the Hickory Nut Gorge\, Bearwallow Mountain\, Little Pisgah Mountain\, and in the distance the highest mountains in the eastern United States.  \nThis trail is made possible through a partnership between two local land trusts–Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) and Conserving Carolina. SAHC owns Strawberry Gap Preserve and worked with multiple private landowners to protect this beautiful mountain land with conservation easements. Conserving Carolina then built the trail\, which connects to Trombatore Trail at Blue Ridge Pastures. This brings us to more than 16 miles of connected trails in the Upper Hickory Nut Gorge. \nThis hike is part of our corporate partnership with Highland Brewing Company in Asheville\, NC.  Highland donates a portion of sales of seasonal releases during the “release party” at the Tasting Room in Asheville to support SAHC’s land and water conservation efforts\, and we lead guided hikes for folks to experience and enjoy the natural landscapes for which these seasonal brews are named and beyond. \nAfter the hike we will have plenty of time to head back by Highland Brewing to enjoy all the festivities and share a Clawhammer together! \n*Please note that Strawberry Gap passes through privately owned land and dogs are not allowed on this trail.  \nCost – FREE for all participants\, (Pre-Registration is Required Below!) \n

SUMMARY:2025 Free the Fir Volunteer Work Day in the Roan Highlands
DESCRIPTION:When: September 11\, 2025 (9:30 am-3:30 pm)\, Rain Date September 16\, 2025 \nWhat: Tropical Storm Helene caused extensive damage to the red spruce-Fraser fir forest in and around Toll House Gap and Roan High Knob. Our partners at the U.S. Forest Service cleared this area of storm damaged trees under a compressed timeline\, using tree material as matting to prevent erosion. We would like to “jump start” natural forest regeneration in this area by releasing small spruce and fir saplings and wildflowers that may be covered or bent over under matting or downed tree branches. \nHow: We will canvas the entire cleared area (roughly 25 acres)\, identifying and uncovering any healthy saplings that we can find and easily release. We will not use any mechanized tools or move large pieces of debris. \nHeads Up: While this work is fairly gentle\, it does require the ability to scramble over a very rugged area with uneven footing\, potential holes\, and rocks. Please do not sign up for this event if you have knee\, back or balance issues. This event is not suitable for small children or dogs. \nWhere: Meet at the Roan High Knob (aka Cloudland) Parking Area at 9:30 am (Directions – https://maps.app.goo.gl/sYNgMT9rLegTH4Ci7) \nWhat to Wear: Dress for the weather and work outside. Please wear long pants and sturdy work boots and bring rain gear. \nWhat to Bring: Bring your lunch\, water\, and gear in addition to leather work gloves\, eye protection\, and any small hand tools (loppers\, garden claws\, small hoes) that may help uncover seedlings. Bathrooms and handwashing are available at the Cloudland Parking Area\, but there is no potable water. \nSchedule:\n9:30 – 10:00 – Sign in\, safety talk\, split into crews and begin work\n12:30 – 1:00 – Lunch with your crew\n1:30 – 3:00 – Continue work (return to parking area when finished)\n3:30 – Meet back at parking area for wrap up\, thanks\, and goodbyes \n  \nFor questions or more information\, contact Roan Stewardship Director Marquette Crockett at marquette@appalachian.org. \nThank you for your interest in volunteering with SAHC. The registration for this work day is now closed.

SUMMARY:2025 NCWF/SAHC Volunteer Work Day at Bowditch Bottoms
DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, August 21 from 9 am to 12 pm\nWhere: SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve in Yancey County\, NC\nJoin the North Carolina Wildlife Federation and the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for volunteer work day and invasive plant species removal at SAHC’s Bowditch Bottoms Preserve in Yancey County. \nThis is one of a series of collaborative volunteer work days on SAHC-conserved land organized by our partners at NC Wildlife Federation.
