SUMMARY:2026 Grassy Ridge Mow-Off
DESCRIPTION:We need YOUR help on the mountain!\nSaturday\, August 15 – Sunday\, August 16\nCamp out or come for a day. Join other volunteers as we work to maintain the globally rare grassy and shrub balds found on Grassy Ridge\, one of the most beautiful and ecologically significant sites in the Roan Highlands. We’ll cut invasive blackberries and other shrubs using weed whackers and brush cutters. Enjoy great company and great job satisfaction! Our annual Grassy Ridge Mow-Off is more than just a work day — it’s an incredible way to experience the Highlands of Roan and to share cherished moments with friends. \nBackpackers and day trippers are both welcome.\nThe hike to Grassy Ridge is a rugged 2.5 miles over three balds\, generally gaining over 650 feet in elevation. If skies are clear\, the views are gorgeous\, and we have a job suited to almost everyone. There are several different ways to help: flagging rare plants\, cutting or raking blackberries\, camp organization or cooking\, taking photographs\, and more. \nDo you plan to join the group camp out on Grassy Ridge on Saturday\, August 15th? Celebrate conservation and participate in MountainTrue’s 10th Annual BioBlitz while exploring our beautiful Wiles Creek and Big Rock Creek preserves (and likely a few others). Attendees will participate in groups with expert naturalists that will guide them in identifying as many species as possible. Data collected on SAHC’s preserves will aid in long term protection of the land. \n\nWhat is a BioBlitz?\n\n\nA BioBlitz is part social event\, part scientific expedition. Armed with the iNaturalist app and guided by experts\, we’ll head into the field to document the rare and rugged ecosystems in the Highlands of Roan. \n\nExplore: Navigate diverse terrains with expert naturalists.\nLearn: Discover how to identify local flora and fauna.\nContribute: Every observation you upload becomes part of a global database used by scientists to track environmental health.\n\n\nJoin the Expedition\n\n\nReady to become a citizen scientist? DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, July 18\, 2026\nTime: 10:00 AM\nDistance: 2.5 miles\nElevation: ~400 feet gain then loss.\nDifficulty:  Moderate (6/10) due to uneven and slick terrain\, minor scrambling.\n\nJoin Park Greer\, SAHC’s Preserve Manager and Erin Goodpaster\, SAHC Outreach Program Manager for an untraditional hike as we explore the aquatic environments of the Beaver Creek Watershed on SAHC’s South Yellow Mountain Preserve near Spruce Pine\, NC. The trek begins with a short safety and ecological talk before heading up the creek. Along the way participants have the opportunity to relax by calming waterfalls\, search for and learn about critters\, or just enjoy the sights and sounds of the wilderness!\n\n\nThe path up the creek is undeveloped and most walking between stopping points will be on game trails and will involve minor scrambling\, requiring the use of hands. SUMMARY:Roan Mountain Garlic Mustard Pull
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 2 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM the Appalachian Trail Conservancy is partnering with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC)\, Roan Mountain State Park\, and the Cherokee National Forest to remove invasive garlic mustard around the Appalachian Trail. \nAll are invited to join us for a fun day of helping to protect the natural habitats and biodiversity found in the A.T. landscape – no experience needed. Plucking out the pesky invaders when they are young is relatively easy and very rewarding work\, but it does take a lot of hands! You also might get to see spring wildflowers that are able to grow in the area\, thanks to the hard work of volunteers who pulled garlic mustard in the past. \nSchedule: \n9:00 AM to 9:15 AM – Introduction\, safety talk\, etc. Volunteers will be briefed\, divided into groups\, and dispersed across the Park and along public roadsides to pull garlic mustard. There will need to be some shuttling and driving of personal vehicles to make this happen. \n9:15 AM to 1:00 PM – Pulling and bagging up garlic mustard! \nFood/Drinks: Please bring your own snacks\, lunch\, and bottled water. Lunch is not provided. Water and light snacks are available from the Conference Center vending machines. \nEquipment/Precautions: Work gloves and trash bags will be provided. Feel free to bring personal gloves or a trowel. Pulling garlic mustard is usually easy\, but a trowel can be helpful for compacted roadside soil and stubborn roots. \nYou will need: A hat and/or sunscreen\, long pants\, sturdy shoes\, lunch\, water\, a warm layer for high elevation hiking\, and rain gear. If you are allergic to poison ivy or insects\, consider wearing long sleeves and pants as a precaution. \nNote: It may be difficult to return to your car while we are working\, so bring a bag to keep your items with you throughout the day. Some work sites are very steep. Please let us know in the morning\, if you prefer to work on flatter terrain or have medical conditions. DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, April 16 1 – 4 pm\n\nWhere: SAHC Community Farm\, 180 Mag Sluder Road Alexander\, NC 28701\n\n\nPlease join us at the SAHC Community farm for a small engine workshop.  \nWe will host a classroom presentation and discussion followed by hands-on engine maintenance and repair work to help you feel empowered to tackle your own equipment issues and keep machines running better for years.  \nDuring the workshop\, we will have a 55 hp tractor\, two-wheel walk behind\, Mule side-by-side and smaller engines on-site to reference.  \nLearn how to save time and money by doing your own repairs on small engines like lawn mowers and other small machinery. Diagnose and repair common problems with 2 and 4-stroke engines. Avoid costly repairs by learning maintenance\, proper fluids\, and appropriate settings to promote long lasting use.  We will also facilitate a short discussion on the pros and cons of battery powered equipment and take a look at an electric lawnmower\, weed eater and chainsaw. \n  \nPre-registration is required. SUMMARY:Little Cove Creek Volunteer Work Day
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer with the Roan Stewardship Team!\nThursday\, April 9 starting at 10 am\nJoin the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy and the Roan Stewardship team for a volunteer workday at the Nilsen Cabin on our Little Cove Creek Preserve. This iconic property\, located on the Tennessee side of the Roan Highlands\, is one of SAHC’s original land acquisition projects. Recently\, SAHC was a recipient of a Tennessee Governor’s Response and Recovery Fund to repair the bridge and driveway into the preserve\, which was damaged during Hurricane Helene. \nNow that repairs are complete\, we would like to celebrate by getting the property ready for the 2026 season. Tasks will include clearing brush and trees from our trails\, weed-eating\, repairing fence around the historic graveyard\, pulling invasives\, and other light clean up work. This will require volunteers to work with weed eaters\, hand tools\, and saws. This event will be a great opportunity to work with friends\, get your hands dirty\, see a beautiful waterfall\, and enjoy a great day outside in the Roan Highlands. \nThis property is located just outside of Roan Mountain\, TN\, 1.5 hours northeast of Asheville\, NC and 45 mins southeast of Johnson City\, TN. Driving directions will be sent to volunteers following registration. \nWhen/Where: We will meet at 10:00 am at the Little Cove Creek Preserve and work until approximately 2:30pm. We’ll pause for a lunch break (bring your own lunch) around 12:30-1:15. \nWhat To Bring: Close-toed shoes\, work gloves\, lunch\, water\, jacket/rain gear. We will be hiking roughly 6 miles round trip along the Rocky Fork Trail\, White Oak Flats Trail\, and the Headwaters Trail and gain about 700 ft of elevation. DESCRIPTION:Where: SAHC South Yellow Mountain Preserve\nWhen: 10:00 am\nDistance: 5 Miles\nDuration: 5.5 hrs\nMeeting Location: Spruce Pine\, NC – exact location sent to you upon registration\nCost: Free for Members\, $10 for Non-Members\nRegistration is required below\nJoin SAHC South Yellow Mountain Preserve Manager Park Greer for a moderately strenuous hike on the Beaver Creek Trail. This hike will guide participants through a protected watershed while exploring the human history\, ecology\, and geology of the region. At the peak is an overlook where everything seen is wholly protected by SAHC. \nThis 5 mile hike is an “out-and-back” mostly along old roadbeds with a few short\, steep sections that can reach 45 degrees and a total elevation gain of 1100 feet. SUMMARY:2026 March Rough Creek Watershed Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, March 28th\nTime: 10:00 am\nWhere: Rough Creek Watershed\nDistance: 5 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: FREE for all participants (Pre-Registration is Required!)\n  \nWe’re hitting the trails to celebrate Highland Brewing Company’s seasonal Saint T’s Pale Ale by hiking the Rough Creek Watershed’s inner loop trail! Participants will hike a moderately strenuous 5 mile loop through a beautiful forest with a near pristine ecosystem. Our hike will consist of about 1\,000 ft of elevation gain\, most within the first two miles. This watershed contains nearly 7 miles of streams\, numerous seeps\, springs\, & swamp/bog areas which have become fairly uncommon with human inhabitants of the region. It also is home to many species of interesting & rare plants (painted trillium\, whorled pogonia) as well as a large & diverse animal population (salamanders\, turkey\, bear\, bobcats\, songbirds). For those interested\, the hike will be followed by celebrating with a Saint T’s Pale Ale. \nThe Rough Creek Watershed property\, located at 265 Rough Water Pt.\, consists of over 870 acres of beautiful & majestic land\, owned by the Town of Canton.  This property is located on the South side of the Newfound Mountain Range\, approximately 5 miles north of Canton in Western North Carolina. The Rough Creek Watershed Trail System is comprised of 3 trails of various distances\, totaling 10+ miles. \nIn 2002\, with the help of the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy\, a partnership was created between the Town of Canton & the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund. This relationship has led to the establishment of a conservation easement throughout the Rough Creek property\, ensuring the protection of its unique forest ecosystem & natural resources. \nThis hike is a part of SAHC’s “For Love of Beer and Mountains” corporate partnership with Highland Brewing Company and is a part of Highland’s “Thirst for Good” partnership.  Highland donates a portion of sales of seasonal releases during the “release party” at the Tasting Room in Asheville to support SAHC’s land and water conservation efforts\, and we lead guided hikes for folks to experience and enjoy the natural landscapes for which these seasonal brews are named and beyond. \n*Please note that dogs are not allowed on these trails.  \nCost – FREE for all participants\, (Pre-Registration is Required Below!)

DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lunch & Learn – Mapping the Mountains: Surveying & Technology in Land Conservation\nWednesday\, March 25 at 12:00 pm EST\nJoin Park Greer\, SAHC’s South Yellow Mountain Preserve Manager for a virtual Lunch & Learn exploring the intersection of land conservation\, land surveying\, and other measurement and monitoring technologies. Before Park joined the SAHC team he worked in land surveying specializing in stream restoration and is excited to share how historical and modern mapping technologies help conservationists better understand\, protect\, and steward the landscapes of the Southern Appalachian mountains. \nMany of these tools and practices are unfamiliar to most even though they impact our daily lives. Understanding the distinction between these tools\, their limitations\, and their uses helps land owners and land protectors to care for the world around them. From the history of surveying to interpreting and defining property boundaries to analyzing forest health and habitat connectivity\, these tools play a critical role in preserving farmland\, forests\, and mountain views for future generations.
