DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lunch & Learn: Spring Ephemeral Wildflowers\nDwarf larkspur (Delphinium tricorne) \nJoin Equinox Environmental’s Owen Carson for a Lunch & Learn about spring ephemeral wildflowers in Southern Appalachia. \nAppalachian Spring truly is a sight to behold! As winter relents\, life bursts forth from the thawed ground\, producing a dazzling display of colors\, shapes\, textures\, and tastes. This world-famous biodiversity (over 6\,000 plant species!) is the focus of many a spring pilgrimage to these mountains. \nIn keeping with tradition\, Owen Carson\, Botanist & Ecologist at Equinox Environmental\, will take us on a virtual plant pilgrimage with a focus on ephemeral and other spring wildflowers commonly seen in Appalachian forests. We will explore their unique biology and ecology\, learn about their preferred habitats\, and see how they are distributed across the landscape. The goal is for you to leave this session feeling more confident on how to recognize and identify native woodland wildflowers. \n\n  \nOwen Carson | Equinox Environmental\nBotanist and Ecologist \nBorn and raised in midtown Atlanta\, GA\, Owen was immersed early on in a world that was dichotomously urban and wild\, instilling a deep love for both environments. His interest in the natural world drove him to attend Brevard College\, where he earned his undergraduate in environmental science\, ecology\, and geology\, and where he fell in love with his wife\, Sarah. In 2010\, he started his career at Equinox as a field technician\, eventually earning the title of Botanist/Senior Ecologist. In his 15 years with Equinox\, Owen has explored the diverse landscapes of Southern Appalachia\, documenting flora and fauna\, protecting land and water\, and helping communities balance development and conservation. Outside of work\, he serves as the Chair of the Transylvania Natural Resources Council\, and as a member of the City of Brevard’s Public Works & Utilities Committee; in both positions Owen uses his knowledge and experience to help inform our community and plan for its sustainable future. At home he finds joy helping to raise 10-year old twins Liam and Hazel\, gardening with native plants\, coaching soccer\, fishing tenkara\, and cooking.\n
