SUMMARY:2024 Farm Workshop: Planning and Planting Food Forest Systems on Contour\, Part 1
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Feb. 29 from 10 am to 4 pm \nAgroforestry and food forests are terms describing a diverse planting of edible plants that attempts to mimic the ecosystems and patterns found in nature for a variety of social and environmental benefits. If you don’t know much about agroforestry\, we have great news — we are starting our second agroforestry project at the SAHC Community Farm. \nAlong with Contour Lines Corp we will be leading the planting of a 3-acre diversified food forest which will feature a number of fruit trees and native support trees planted on contour in a system of berms and swales.  This is a unique demonstration project on conservation land\, which will be managed in perpetuity so that we can all learn about the numerous benefits and beauty of perennial agroforestry and food forest systems. \nFolks will receive a solid introduction on how to plan and plant a food forest agroforestry site that includes hundreds of fruit and support trees on a berm and swale contour system. Some species we will be planting include Black Locust\, Willow\, Cottonwood\, Elderberry\, Mulberry\, Persimmon\, Apple\, Pear\, Blueberry\, Fig and Peaches. \nJoin us\, rain or shine\, for all or any part of the day to learn\, observe\, and take part in planting if you choose. Please bring a water bottle\, gloves\, raincoat/work clothes if you’re planting; tools will be provided. \nLunch will be provided midway between our morning classroom portion\, and then the rest of the day will be hands-on work. \nLocation: SAHC Community Farm at 180 Mag Sluder Road\, Alexander\, NC 28701 \nQuestions: Contact Community Farm Manager Chris Link at chris@appalachian.org. \nPre-registration is requested. Suggested donation $20; no one turned away for inability to pay. \nSAHC received a $6\,000 Catalyzing Agroforestry Grant to support this project\, and nonprofit organization Contour Lines  Corp. (contourlines.org) is donating plant material\, design and expertise for hands-on workshops to help execute the silvopasture project on the SAHC Community Farm. The Catalyzing Agroforestry Grants Program is an initiative funded by the Appalachian Beginning Forest Farming Coalition (ABFFC) and Edwards Mother Earth Foundation (EMEF) that is managed by Virginia Tech University in partnership with Rural Action\, Appalachian Sustainable Development\, The Yew Mountain Center\, North Carolina State University. \nRegister for Workshop\n\n\nSAHC Community Farm work is funded in part by grants from The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina\, a grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program (under grant award number 2021-70033-35717)\, and a cost-share grant from USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.

SUMMARY:2024 Farm Workshop: Utopian Seed Project - Tropical Perennials as Temperate Annuals
DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, April 18th\n\nFrom: 1 pm to 3 pm\nLocation: SAHC Community Farm\nTropical perennials can be stunning plants offering a diverse diet for a changing climate. Join The Utopian Seed Project’s Chris Smith in a workshop that will cover the complete growing cycle\, including storage and re-sprouting for a range of crops including: taro\, arrowroot\, yacon\, turmeric\, ginger\, water chestnut\, chayote\, sweet potato\, ube\, and cassava. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n#ClimateAction begins at home – or in your home garden! Join us on Thursday April 18 (1-3 pm) for a special Farm Education Workshop\, as Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy teams up with award-winning growers from The Utopian Seed Project at the SAHC Community Farm in Alexander\, NC. Learn about tropical perennials that thrive in the Appalachian mountains. You can grow tropical perennials as temperate zone annuals – reducing the impact of importing goods from far away AND creating a more diverse\, resilient food system in your local community. This workshop will be appropriate for multiple scales of production – for everyone from the home gardener to commercial operations. \n“Adapting growing techniques to the region creates a high level of climate resilience; it’s one of the best ways to respond to climate change\,” says SAHC Community Farm Manager Chris Link. “These varieties are selected for their ability to grow in our local environment\, and to withstand the fluctuations of weather extremes. Come to the workshop and learn how to adapt new food crops to our region for more resilient food systems that can handle the stress of a varying climate.” \nThe Utopian Seed Project is experimenting with open-field cultivation\, not greenhouse production\, so growing these crops is accessible to everyone. It’s planting time\, so we’ll have plenty of show and tell to explore these crops! \nPre-registration is requested. Suggested donation $20; no one turned away for inability to pay. \nRegister for workshop below:\n\n\n\nFunded in part by a grant from The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina. This material is based upon work that is supported by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture\, U.S. Department of Agriculture\, under award number 2016-70017-25341 for Farm Pathways: Integrating Farmer Training with Land Access. Any opinions\, findings\, conclusions\, or recommendations expressed in this publication are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the view of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

SUMMARY:2024 Farm Planning & Design Workshop: Climate Resilience
DESCRIPTION:When: Tuesday\, December 17 from 1 pm – 4 pm\nWhere: SAHC Community Farm (180 Mag Sluder Road Alexander\, NC 28701)\n\nAre you looking for the perfect farm property but not sure how to create the best plan for your land? Join us for an introduction to planning and layout of land for small-scale farming with a focus on climate-resilient design. \nOur case study for this process will be a property just around the corner from the SAHC Community Farm in Alexander. We will have a virtual “walk through” site analysis of the property’s conditions using a number of land planning tools\, with a Permaculture approach. We will inventory conditions such as soils\, water\, wind\, aspect and more to create a multi-layered map of the site as a base for decision making. Using this information\, we will actively draw up together a concept for the site\, which addresses some of the needs and challenges identified in the analysis phase.  Through this design process we will cover how to avoid making a $10\,000 “bad decision” when beginning with infrastructure improvements. \nThis workshop will be particularly appropriate for participants who already own or lease land\, as well as those who plan to do so in the future. Our focus will be on growers and how best to make design decisions for resiliency. \nPre-registration is required. Farm workshop fee is $20; no one turned away for inability to pay. \nFill out registration form below to sign up for this workshop.\n\n\n  \n\n   \nSAHC Community Farm work is funded in part by grants from The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina\, a grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program (under grant award number 2021-70033-35717)\, and a cost-share grant from USDA Natural Resources Conservati

SUMMARY:2025 Fire Safety and Land Management
DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday\, Oct. 11 from 10 am to 1 pm\nWhere: SAHC Community Farm – 180 Mag Sluder Rd\, Alexander\, NC\n\nSouthern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy is partnering with Blue Ridge RC&D\, Mountain Valleys RC&D\, Carolina Land and Lakes\, Piedmont Prescribed Burn Association\, and NC Forest Service to host a Fire Safety and Land Management Workshop. The training will include an introduction to forest management at the SAHC Community Farm\, firewise basics\, homeowner risk assessments\, information about prescribed fire as a land management strategy\, landscape-scale wildlife preparedness\, and more. We will have training and discussion time in the Education and Event building at the farm as well as a walk on the property.\n\n\n\nLunch will be provided. This event is free to attend\, but registration is required so that we can plan for the day\, including lunch.\n\n\n\nFill Out Form to Register to Attend Fire Safety and Land Management Workshop\n\n\nAbout the Presenting Partners:\n\n\nMountain Valleys RC&D\nMountain Valleys RC&D (Resource Conservation and Development) is a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainable stewardship of forest resources that operates in eight counties in Western North Carolina\, inlcuding Buncombe County.  Communities near forests or other undeveloped areas are vulnerable to wildfires because they’re essentially surrounded by fuel.  Prescribed burning is a useful technique for managing forests\, however\, there are also many proactive steps that a community or individual homeowner can take to reduce the risk of loss; such as fuel reduction around the home\, maintaining clear gutters\, and fire resistant construction.  Mountain Valleys RC&D works with communities and governmental/private organizations to educate homeowners on how to best protect their property. \n  \nCommunity Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP)\nCarolina Land and Lakes was awarded the USDA Community Wildfire Defense Grant (CWDG) in FY22 and FY23 to update and create Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP) in 27 Counties in NC and for the Qualla Boundary of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. These counties are considered to have a High to Very High Wildfire Potential\, are Low Income and have experienced a natural disaster which has increased their wildfire risk. The CWPPs are developed at the fire district level to identify available resources and possible community actions to reduce fuels and structural ignitability. \nPiedmont Prescribed Burn Association\nWe are a community-based organization dedicated to increasing access to prescribed fire on lands in the Piedmont of North Carolina. The Piedmont Prescribed Burn Association welcomes individuals who are passionate about supporting conservation initiatives\, including private landowners\, natural resource professionals\, students\, and the general public. Together\, we strive to foster a collaborative environment to promote the responsible use of prescribed fire for the benefit of our local landscape.

SUMMARY:2026 Farm Workshop: Planning & Design - Climate Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Farm Planning & Design: Climate Resilience\nWhen: Thursday\, March 19\, 1 – 4 pm\nWhere: SAHC Community Farm\, 180 Mag Sluder Road Alexander\, NC 28701\n\nAre you looking for the perfect farm property but not sure how to create the best plan for your land? \n\n  \nPre-registration is required. Farm workshop fee is $20; no one turned away for inability to pay. \nFor questions\, contact SAHC Community Farm Manager Chris Link\, chris@appalachian.org. \nRegistration for this workshop has now closed.\n  \n\n  \n\n  \nSAHC Community Farm work is funded in part by grants from The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina\, a grant from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program (under grant award number 2021-70033-35717)\, and a cost-share grant from USDA Natural Resources Conservati
