SUMMARY:2024 Land Trust Day - Snowball Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, June 1st\nTime: 10:30am\nWhere: Snowball Mountain Trailhead\, off the Blue Ridge Parkway\nDistance: 3 miles\nDifficulty: Moderately strenuous (7/10)\nCost: $10 for non-members\, FREE for members\nJoin Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for a hike to the protected Snowball Mountain. The first Saturday of June each year is Land Trust Day. On this day businesses and land trusts across North Carolina have come together to celebrate conservation. Land Trust Day highlights the important role that protected lands and the outdoors play in our communities. \nThis moderate 3-mile hike will take hikers along a high elevation ridge line with remarkable views. We will start out on the Mountains-to-Sea trail and split off to climb Snowball Mountain. Next\, we will continue North to Hawkbill Rock where we will look back onto the property and into the Woodfin Watershed— another SAHC-protected landmark. Hikers should be prepared for a short trip\, but steep elevation changes along the way. Snowball Mountain was one of the marquee parcels that pushed SAHC past the 50\,000-acre milestone mark at the end of 2011. \nCome and enjoy this beautiful property and learn about SAHC’s projects in this spectacular area of the Black Mountain range. In 2012\, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased 90 acres on Snowball Mountain in Buncombe County\, permanently preserving scenic views for recreational visitors\, clean water sources for area residents\, and habitat for native species. Nestled in the beautiful Craggy Mountains\, this tract is highly visible from the Blue Ridge Parkway and national forest land\, and it adjoins the publicly accessible Snowball Mountain Trail and Camp Sequoyah Trail. \nSAHC’s Snowball Mountain tract joins a significant swath of state and federal protected land\, contributing another piece to a vast network of over 125\,000 acres of contiguous protected forestlands. With approximately 250 species of birds inhabiting the Southern Appalachian Mountains\, there is no shortage of opportunities for birders to observe and appreciate these fascinating creatures. Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or just beginning to explore the world of birdwatching\, joining a bird walk can be an excellent way to learn tips and techniques for spotting and identifying native bird species. \nThe Elizabethton Bird Club\, in collaboration with the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy\, invites individuals to participate in a leisurely spring bird walk at Hampton Creek Cove. This 693-acre preserve offers an ideal habitat for a diverse range of bird species\, including the elusive Golden-winged Warbler. Thanks to the conservation efforts of multiple agencies\, including SAHC\, the habitat of the Golden-winged Warbler has been protected\, providing birdwatchers with a unique opportunity to observe these beautiful birds in their natural environment. \nDuring the bird walk\, participants will have the chance to learn from experienced birders and representatives of the Elizabethton Bird Club\, including Debi Campbell\, Joe McGuiness and SAHC board member Chris Soto. These knowledgeable individuals will share their expertise on bird identification and behavior\, helping attendees develop their skills as birdwatchers. \nWhile participants are encouraged to bring their own binoculars\, a limited number of pairs will be available on a first-come\, first-served basis. Several steep inclines and stream-crossings\nCost: FREE\nRegistration: Pre-registration is REQUIRED\n  \nWe invite you to join us for a memorial hike to honor and remember our friend Bill Popper and his dedication to preserving the 573-acre Prices Creek Preserve in Yancey County that he loved so much.  \nThis hike is a perennial favorite\, taking participants through our Price’s Creek Preserve where an astounding array of ephemeral wildflowers can be found this time of year. Participants will hike through mature northern hardwood forest along a trail following the babbling Price’s Creek. Midway along the trail – a spur trail leads up to a picturesque cascade where we will stop for a leisurely picnic lunch. \nNOTE: Due to limited parking availability\, we will be hard capping this hike at 12 participants. Please register each party member individually to ensure we do not go over this number.  \nWe will meet at a public parking area before carpooling to Price’s Creek Preserve. Along the way\, learn about both Montane Oak-Hickory and Rich and Acidic Cove forests all the while being surrounded by breathtaking mountain views. \nNestled on the south side of the Newfound Mountain Range\, just 5 miles north of the charming Town of Canton\, lies the Rough Creek Watershed—an expansive 870-acre oasis of natural splendor. Owned by the Town of Canton\, this beautiful property is a testament to the region’s commitment to preserving its scenic landscapes. What’s more\, this little-known gem of an outdoor destination is open to the public\, inviting hikers and mountain bikers alike to discover its beauty year-round. The Rough Creek Watershed Trail System is comprised of 3 trails of various distances\, totaling 10+ miles. \nSAHC was instrumental in the protection of this expansive conservation easement held by the Clean Water Management Trust Fund\, co-managed with SAHC and owned by the Town of Canton. This hidden gem consists of adjoining properties under a conservation easement that the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy monitors each year. The Preserve is open to the public and encompasses over 250 acres. Bailey Mountain is the highest peak visible from the Town of Mars Hill\, and this mountain figures prominently in the history of the Town and Mars Hill University. The preserve offers six contiguous miles of hiking trails\, masterfully built and maintained by the dedicated volunteers and the Friends of Bailey Mountain. Participants will hike a moderately strenuous 3 miles out-and-back through a beautiful forest while taking in sweeping views of Fairview\, NC. \nStrawberry Gap is the newest trail in the stunning Upper Hickory Nut Gorge trail network–just opened in September 2022! The trail climbs upward for a mile and a half through beautiful\, boulder-strewn forests. At the summit\, a rock outcrop offers sweeping views over a picturesque valley backdropped by the distant\, Black Mountains.  \nThis trail is made possible through a partnership between two local land trusts\, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy and Conserving Carolina. SAHC owns Strawberry Gap Preserve and worked with multiple private landowners to protect this beautiful mountain land with conservation easements. Conserving Carolina then built the trail\, which connects to Trombatore Trail at Blue Ridge Pastures. DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, October 21st\nTime: 10:30 am\nWhere: Waterrock Knob Visitor Center\, Blue Ridge Parkway\nDistance:  5 miles\nDifficulty: 5 miles (out and back)\, rugged\, rocky terrain with steep elevation change\nCost: FREE for all participants (pre-registration is required)\nJoin the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy on October 21st for a moderately strenuous hike to enjoy Blackrock Ridge with views of Thunderstruck Ridge\, Waterrock Knob and other 6\,00ft peaks! Participants will travel 5 miles of rugged terrain through mystical red spruce\, Fraser firs\, and red oak forests while periodically stopping at rock outcroppings for awe inspiring views. During this time of year\, we’ll be seeing spectacular fall colors as well as Saw-Whet Owl and Carolina Northern Flying squirrel habitat! \nBlackrock Mountain in the Plott Balsam Mountains is part of a network of conservation lands in progress of being added to an expansion of national park land at Waterrock Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway. In 2013\, Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased the summit of Blackrock Mountain\, with more than 250 surrounding acres. The property adjoins other conservation lands: SAHC’s 60-acre Blackrock Ridge tract (protected in 2010)\, the Sylva Watershed (protected with a conservation easement held by the Land Trust for the Little Tennessee)\, and The Nature Conservancy’s Plott-Balsam Preserve. DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, September 30th\nTime: 10:00 am\nWhere: Pisgah National Forest near Brevard\, NC\nDistance:  10.5 miles\nDifficulty: Very strenuous (10+). 10+ mile hike with significant elevation change.\nCost: FREE for all participants (pre-registration is required)\nJoin the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy to celebrate our “For Love of Beer and Mountains” partnerships. This hike to Clawhammer Mountain\, namesake of Highland Brewing Company’s seasonal Clawhammer Oktoberfest Lager\, will be a long and strenuous 10+ mile trip along multi-use trails that traverse mountain bike\, equestrian\, and hiking trails as well as forest service roads. We will follow the trails up a steep climb along a creek\, through wildflower patches and rich cove forest. From Clawhammer Cove to the summit\, we will climb close to 1\,900 feet to finish at 4\,072 ft elevation. The cliff-top view at the summit offers scenic views of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Looking Glass in Pisgah National Forest. \nThis hike is part of our corporate partnership with Highland Brewing Company in Asheville\, NC. This hike will celebrate the 2023 Year of the Trail to help interested residents\, visitors and trails enthusiasts in the area (and across the state) find and attend events\, connect with others\, and learn more about advocating for trails in NC. \nThis moderate 3-mile hike will take hikers along a high elevation ridgeline with remarkable views. We will start out on the Mountains-to-Sea trail and split off to climb Snowball Mountain. Next\, we will continue North to Hawkbill Rock where we will look back onto the property and into the Woodfin Watershed— another SAHC-protected landmark. Hikers should be prepared for a short trip\, but steep elevation changes along the way. Snowball Mountain was one of the marquee parcels that pushed SAHC past the 50\,000-acre milestone mark at the end of 2011. \nCome and enjoy this beautiful property and learn about SAHC’s projects in this spectacular area of the Black Mountain range. In 2012\, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy purchased 90 acres on Snowball Mountain in Buncombe County\, permanently preserving scenic views for recreational visitors\, clean water sources for area residents\, and habitat for native species. Participants will hike a moderately strenuous 6 mile out-and-back through a beautiful forest while taking in sweeping views of Fairview\, NC before arriving at the remote Blue Ridge Pastures. \nStrawberry Gap is the newest trail in the stunning Upper Hickory Nut Gorge trail network–just opened in September 2022! The trail climbs upward for three miles through beautiful\, boulder-strewn forests. About halfway up\, a rock outcrop offers sweeping views over a picturesque valley and range upon range of distant\, blue mountains. The climax of this trail is Blue Ridge Pastures\, where the forests give way to a ridgeline pasture\, revealing dramatic views of the Hickory Nut Gorge\, Bearwallow Mountain\, Little Pisgah Mountain\, and in the distance the highest mountains in the eastern United States.  \nThis trail is made possible through a partnership between two local land trusts–Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) and Conserving Carolina. SAHC owns Strawberry Gap Preserve and worked with multiple private landowners to protect this beautiful mountain land with conservation easements. Conserving Carolina then built the trail\, which connects to Trombatore Trail at Blue Ridge Pastures. This hike will utilize three trails\, the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail\, the Shell Hollow Trail\, and the Birchfield Creek Trail. Starting from the parking area we will follow the footsteps of the Overmountain Victory Men\, heroes of the Revolutionary War\, who hiked this route in 1780 through Hampton Creek Cove! The Overmountain Victory Trail will take us to the Shell Hollow Trail which will take us deep into the woods and through stands of old growth forest that surround the old Shell family homestead. Once completed the Shell Hollow Trail we will hike further into the state natural area along the Birchfield Creek Trail which will reward well-deserving hikers with cool shade and crisp mountain water that is tumbling off the Roan. Participants will enjoy secluded swimming holes perfect for cooling off on a hot summer day\, before returning to their cars. \n  \nThis hike will cover lots of variable terrain in both open fields\, creeks\, and deep forested habitats. Participants should expect to hike 5 miles before returning to their car. We hope participants will join us after this hike for the SAHC Drop-in Social at our Little Cove Creek Preserve. Starting at Carvers Gap\, this route will descend the northern flank of Roan Mountain following the Hackline Road Trail (FS53281). The trail will drop a 1\,000 ft in elevation over the course of a mile before we break off the designated route and bush-wack our way through the Cherokee National Forest to Little Cove Creek. From the creek\, the group will continue following the creek down another 1\,000 ft in elevation to SAHC’s Little Cove Creek Preserve where we will be hosting a Drop-in Social with drinks and refreshments. This challenge hike will literally end at a party!  \nOverall\, this hike will be a 3 three mile\, one-way hike\, with -2\,000 ft of elevation change. The driving distance between the Carvers Gap and the SAHC’s Little Cove Creek Preserve is 9 miles (18 minutes estimated drive time). Setting shuttle cars will be required for this hike and will be coordinated amongst registrants. This is a great opportunity to test out that new camera or pair of binoculars\, or just explore the sights and sounds of Hampton Creek Cove! \nThis hike will be slow and methodical. Plan to hike less than three miles in open field habitat before returning to their cars. This family-friendly offering is designed to provide people of all abilities with an opportunity to get outside and enjoy some of the properties SAHC has diligently worked to protect over the last four decades. This trail is paved and wheelchair/stroller accessible. SUMMARY:2023 June Community Farm Tour - National Trails Day and Land Trust Day
DESCRIPTION:Date: Friday\, June 2nd\nTime: Starting at 2:00 pm\nWhere: SAHC Community Farm\nDistance: 3 miles\nDifficulty: Moderate. Several steep inclines are present on the trail.\nCost: Free for Members. $10 for non-members.\n  \nJoin the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy on our beautiful Community Farm to hike along our Discovery Trail! We will be celebrating Land Trust Day and National Trails Day a day early. Conservation land trusts like Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy play a critical role in helping to conserve land for public enjoyment as well as privately-owned preserves that protect view-sheds and wildlife corridors near national trails. Land trusts work to protect and manage a wide variety of important land and water resources\, including habitat for rare plants and animals\, farmland\, and sources of drinking water for millions of people. \nIn light of National Land Trust Day\, we are grateful to local businesses and citizens who recognize the importance of this work and have stepped up with their support for SAHC. \nOur Community Farm is a 140-acre educational and working farm just outside Asheville. The farm is a continually evolving home for conservation projects and agricultural production. Highlighted by our stream restoration project\, shortleaf pine reforestation project\, farm incubator program\, and education center\, there is always something new to see. \nParticipants will hike The Discovery Trail in a 3-mile loop allowing us to view all of the amazing farm projects before returning to the parking area. Participants are welcome to bring a packed lunch to enjoy while overlooking the farm and surrounding mountains. \nPlease note that our Community Farm is an active farm not open to the public unless accompanied by SAHC staff. To ensure safety\, staff capacity\, and a positive experience for everyone involved it is critical that ALL hike participants pre-register for events before visiting the farm. You will receive an email with specific information about where to meet on the farm and other necessary details. If you do not receive this email\, as well as a confirmation email following your registration\, we do not have you registered for the hike.
