This hidden gem boasts a stunning knoll offering panoramic views of the Walnut Mountains and Black Mountains. Your guide for this nature-filled experience will be Katie Greer\, our knowledgeable Community Engagement and Education AmeriCorps member. \nEstablished in 2005\, the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy’s Farmland Program was initiated to preserve the natural and cultural heritage of Western North Carolina and East Tennessee. DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, February 17th\nTime: Starting at 10:30 am\nWhere: Rough Creek Watershed\, Canton\, NC\nDistance: 4.5 miles\nDifficulty: Moderate (5-6)\nCost: Free to the public but registration is REQUIRED\n  \nJoin us on a moderate\, 4.5-mile hike along the trails at the Rough Creek Watershed. Katie Greer\, our Community Engagement and Education AmeriCorps member\, will lead the way providing insights into the various plant species\, making this hike an educational adventure. Along the way\, learn about both Montane Oak-Hickory and Rich and Acidic Cove forests all the while being surrounded by breathtaking mountain views. \nNestled on the south side of the Newfound Mountain Range\, just 5 miles north of the charming Town of Canton\, lies the Rough Creek Watershed—an expansive 870-acre oasis of natural splendor. Owned by the Town of Canton\, this beautiful property is a testament to the region’s commitment to preserving its scenic landscapes. What’s more\, this little-known gem of an outdoor destination is open to the public\, inviting hikers and mountain bikers alike to discover its beauty year-round. The Rough Creek Watershed Trail System is comprised of 3 trails of various distances\, totaling 10+ miles. \nSAHC was instrumental in the protection of this expansive conservation easement held by the Clean Water Management Trust Fund\, co-managed with SAHC and owned by the Town of Canton. Our Stewardship Team monitors the conservation easement each year\, to ensure that the land and water resources will continue to be protected for future generations. \nDon’t let the winter chill keep you indoors!
