Join the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy on an exploration of the musical heritage of the Appalachian Mountains at Bailey Mountain Park. Participants will begin the hike with a lesson on the history of traditional music in southern Appalachia by Leila Weinstein, Program Coordinator for Mars Hill University’s Ramsey Center for Regional Studies and director of the Bascom Lamar Lunsford “Minstrel of Appalachia” Festival. This lesson will be accompanied by a brief musical performance at the head of the trail by Lillian Chase, a well-known young fiddle player whose playing is steeped in the traditions of Madison County. The hike will then proceed through protected land to the top of Bailey Mountain overlooking other conserved land in the Black Mountains. Enjoy a forested loop walk with some river and farm views, followed by a climb to enjoy long-distance views from the ridge. Participants will walk away from the hike with a deeper understanding of conservation in this region and the significance of Madison County for bluegrass and old time music. After the hike participants are welcomed to rendezvous at Zuma Coffee in Marshall, NC to witness bluegrass legend Bobby Hicks, former fiddle player for Bill Monroe, perform in a jam with local talent.
