The Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy Community Farm is looking for volunteers to manage our flock of around 150 chickens! Volunteers will be split into three primary roles: Chicken Care Volunteers, Egg Washing Volunteers, and Farmers Market Volunteers. Volunteers for these three roles will make a significant difference on the farm and massively help our current farm staff!
Chicken Care Volunteers will be responsible for ensuring the chickens stay healthy and happy by providing fresh food and water and harvesting freshly laid eggs. Egg Washing Volunteers will then take these eggs and prepare them for sale. Farmers Market volunteers will take the cleaned, freshly harvested eggs and sell them at local farmer’s markets. SAHC will use money from the proceeds to aid with Community Farm initiatives.
Currently, we expect shifts for Chicken Care Volunteers and Egg Washing Volunteers to be either 10 am to 1 pm or 1 pm to 3 pm on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Farmers Market Volunteers will be assisting at Farmers Markets Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Volunteers will receive 1-2 dozen fresh eggs for personal use after each volunteer shift.
If you are interested in volunteering, we will be hosting a training session on Tuesday, April 26th, from 10 am to 12 pm. We will educate you on the Chicken Care and Egg Washing positions at the training. Details for the Farmers Market Volunteer Position are currently to be determined. We will share what information we can on Tuesday and have a second training day based solely on Farmers Market duties later. *The SAHC Community Farm is an active farm and diverse program site with livestock and market producers as well as visiting guests, volunteer crews, youth education groups, and more. Some of these groups may overlap in time on different areas of the farm. To ensure safety, staff capacity, and positive experiences for everyone involved in these myriad projects, it is important that ALL volunteers, hikers, and guests of the farm pre-register for events and activities before visiting the farm site. You will receive an email with specific information about where on the farm to meet and other details after registration.*
