Join the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy and Highlands Brewing Company on October 10 for a moderately strenuous hike through Mt. Mitchell State Park as we celebrate Highland’s seasonal release of Rustic Ridge IPA. Starting at the park headquarters, participants will hike a 4.2-mile loop, during which they will summit Mt. Mitchell, the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi, sitting at 6,684 feet above sea level. During the hike, we will discuss the history of the park and the unique ecosystems it encompasses, all while walking through rare and beautiful high elevation spruce-fir forests. Anyone looking to complete the Southern Sixer Challenge can make good use of this hike!
SAHC has helped protect several small tracts of land that are now a part of Mt. Mitchell state park. We will also be hiking adjacent to the SAHC-monitored, 8,500-acre Big Tom Wilson Nature Preserve. This beautiful section of mountains can be seen from the Blue Ridge Parkway. SAHC’s conservation work in this area protects high elevation habitat and pristine headwater streams. So come out, and let’s celebrate Appalachia and land conservation together.
