Volunteer Opportunities
We need energetic volunteers. Opportunities include:
- Leading guided hikes on protected properties
- Recruiting new members
- Planning and hosting special events
- Walking property boundaries
- Taking photographs of properties
- Public and community outreach
- General office work

2008 Balds Management Work Day Activity List
General Work Day Description:
Woody vegetation is targeted for removal from
grassy balds between Carver's Gap and Grassy Ridge. Management will entail blackberry
removal via mowing with gas-powered,
brush-cutters/weedeaters; shrub removal
with hand-held pruning shears; tree removal
with hand saws and chainsaws. Hiking is
generally required to get to the work site.
Manage typically occurs from
mid-July – mid-October of each year.

What to Bring?
wear long pants
· sturdy, closed-toed shoes
· backpack
· jacket and/or long-sleeved shirt
· rain jacket
· work gloves
· bagged lunch & snacks
· plenty of drinking water
· hat and sunblock – the sun is really intense at this elevation!
· camera (optional)
- Equipment and supplies - brush cutters/weedeaters, saws, lopping shears, earplugs, eye protection and gas - will be provided for volunteers. Exceptions apply to work crews who SAHC has made specific arrangements with.
- Be prepared for high elevation mountain weather - warm, cool and/or wet weather. Note that the weather can change suddenly and unexpectedly despite the weather forecast. Therefore be prepared by dressing in (or packing) layers.
- Personal camping gear, if applicable.

How to volunteer?
If you are involved with an organization, community group or youth group which is interested in hosting a group work day (e.g., ATC Work Day, CUMC Youth Group Work Day, Boy Scout Troop #221 Work Day), please contact SAHC personnel.
If you are an individual who is interested in participating in scheduled balds management work days listed, please contact SAHC personnel.

What : Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) Work Day
Who : ATC volunteers. Additional volunteers needed!
Activity : Chainsawing and lopping of large woody shrubs and trees (and possibly weedeating) on west side of Round Bald
Schedule : August 28 – 9:00am - Meet at Carver's Gap
9:00am- ~4:00pm - Work
August 29 – 9:00am - Meet at Carver's Gap
9:00am-~2:30pm - Work
~2:30pm - Hike to Goat Study Site
Note : August 27, 28 and 29 - Camping is available at Roan Mountain State Park
